The greatest catastrophe of (post-)colonial Central Europe? The 100th years anniversary of Trianon and official politics of memory in Hungary
In: Rocznik Instytutu Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej, Band 18, Heft 2, S. 123-142
The Treaty of Trianon (hereinafter Trianon), the enormous losses of territory and co-ethnics, and the shaking of Hungary's status as a dominant power in the Carpathian Basin imputed a tragic understanding of contemporary Hungarian history on the Hungarian society, invoking the idea of a trauma lasting even today. Trianon's understanding became a divisive issue for political parties after 1989, highlighting the ever-deeper divisions between right and left-liberals, since 2010. Its "overcoming" is a flagship project of the government's politics of identity, with modest success so far. Thus, the 100th anniversary was a crucial moment as a test case for a self-professed nationalist, traditionalist, conservative political force for manifesting a comprehensive politics of memory. In the light of the newly built monument at the heart of Budapest, with the Hungarian names of all localities on the territory of pre-1918 Hungary inscribed on its wall, a cautious shifting back to territorial revisionism was expected. In this article, I will argue that even with such tendencies being, obviously, present, the official commemorations were crafted with a surprising message, that attempts to turn the canonical understanding of Trianon upside down and reframe it into a common catastrophe of Central Europe. Doing so places the consequences in the context of the decolonization of history, the present decline of empires, and the emergence of nation-states while combining it with important tropes of the traditional, anti-liberal and revisionist Trianon discourse. Nevertheless, the result is a transparently political message that is not only driven by easily visible actual political goals (V4 and Central European), but one that detaches the politics of memory from historical references and legacies and creates a set of shallow symbols for utter instrumentalization, to recombine at will, in a vulgarised sense of post-modernism.
In the 700th anniversary of Dante's death: the geomatics of the Comedy ; A 700 anni dalla morte di Dante: la geomatica della Commedia
As we approach the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri this work seeks to examine his Comedy in its entirety, providing, in the first instance, a statistical analysis of the places mentioned therein, and another dealing with the characters associated with these places. The analysis is intended to be exhaustive and includes those places, obviously less frequent, outside of Italy (in this regard, it should be remembered that Dante could not have had much greater knowledge of geography than that already condensed in Ptolemy's Ecumene). To this end, groups of high school students were asked to read all the cantos of the three Canticles of which Dante's Divine Comedy (by Dante Alighieri) is composed, and to prepare a list of the required data in a properly ordered list. Their dedication and painstaking efforts have provided an indispensable, invaluable and essential support for the creation of the database from which the statistical, graphical and geomatic analyses that form the core of this paper are derived. Next, the variance analysis (performed using the Pearson correlation coefficient) and the connection analysis (performed with the Bonferroni Indices) are presented, observing the absence of a law on the average behavior of the variables treated and yet a not entirely random permutation (in contrast, the values of the correlation coefficients display curious tendencies in Inferno and Paradiso, reflecting Dante's political ideas, while being almost non-existent in Purgatorio). Lastly, a network is created to organize the information flow between characters and places on the basis of the tables into which the data collected was placed. This network has a functional model similar to that of a leveling network, or a network of potential differences or flows, in other disciplines (despite the obvious absence of observations and a stochastic-metrological model for them). The data collected are condensed into a series of anamorphic maps that facilitate their reading. In this case too, precious and indispensable has been the contribution of the architect-graphic designer who produced the anamorphic maps and the other images, displayed to support the statistical and numerical processes presented in this work (in this regard, equal merits must also go to the teacher of Italian who coordinated all the work performed by the aforementioned High School students): Without some small, but nonetheless very useful, contributions, even the greatest of ideas are worth nothing. The analysis as a whole does not seek to analyze the Divine Comedy but rather to highlight, from a statistical point of view, the rigor of Dante's creation, in terms of its accuracy and reliability. On the other hand, from a geomatics point of view, the work does provide a further example of the possibilities offered by geomatics applications that today are able to find uses in areas traditionally far removed from geomatics and applied geomatics, such as those of the human sciences. This approach is particularly interesting, because it seeks to make available, without airs or graces, the point of view of geomatic scientists, with their measurement techniques, their mathematical models and their methods of calculation and analysis, to other disciplines, taking into consideration other data, different from those traditionally dealt with by the surveying disciplines (with an eagerness to share ideas, and with a spirit of service and a wish to learn new things). Thus, the desired point of convergence is to expand the boundaries of Geomatics Applications, in this direction, and, also, on the other hand, to find interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary interlocutors who can propose examples, of certain appeal, who can critically evaluate the methodologies used and the results obtained, and who can maintain a constructive dialogue allowing both convergent communities to grow critically and to improve.

Surprise, an Anniversary Gift or a Real Challenge? Quick View on the Election of Donald Tusk for the President of the European Council
Ten years after Poland's accession to the European Union it seems right to ask the question: is our country a subject or an object in the political game in Brussels? Is our position strong enough to effectively influence the decision-making mechanisms in the European Union? Or maybe what some say about Poland's position in the EU is true and our country is indeed "playing out of its league? In an attempt to contribute to answering these questions, in this text the author tries to identify the factors which may have had an impact on the election of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk for the President of the European Council. The aim of the conducted cognitive process is also to perform an initial analysis of the visible results of this move, both for the institutional system of the European Union and for the way in which public decisions are shaped within the organization. The author also tries to identify the most significant challenges the Union has to face, as seen from the perspective of the President of the European Council. One might hope that this will be a good starting point for learning about the mechanism of forming political decisions in the EU, which will also find their place in the hereby publication as part of an extended analysis.

Secondary Second Circulation. On the Thirtieth Anniversary of the Abolition of Censorship in Poland ; Drugorzędny drugi obieg. W trzydziestą rocznicę zniesienia cenzury w Polsce
Underground literature exists only in historical archives or in private collections – and stands no chance of affecting the contemporary debate. Who would be now really interested in liberal views or thematic and aesthetic diversity of underground literature when radical forces, fake news and trolls increasingly shape communication in the public space? Can the escalation of ideological conflicts in Poland lead to a more instrumental approach towards the myth of dissident literature and the press by political actors? What potential for literary and cultural research (but also for teaching) does the underground literature and press have? Does the transition from samizdat to digitization facilitate cultivating memory about these publications? And last but not least, is it time to demythologize some aspects of this culture? 30 years after the abolition of censorship, a question can still be asked why heroes of the Polish history such as printers, distributors and authors are not present in popular forms of remembrance. Któż byłby dziś naprawdę zainteresowany prezentowanymi w niej liberalnymi poglądami, jej różnorodnością tematyczną i estetyczną, kiedy radykalne siły, fake newsy i trolle w coraz większym stopniu kształtują komunikację w przestrzeni publicznej?

The ephemeral displays in Rome during the tenth anniversary of the March on Rome (1932)
Despite the rich bibliography of the "Exhibition of the Fascist Revolution" ("Mostra della Rivoluzione Fascista", 1932), the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the March on Rome does not end in the spectacular setting inside the Palace of Exhibitions. In fact, in a urban perspective, some thematic pavilions, scattered around the city, show, on the one hand, the continual "aestheticization" process of the political and social live by Mussolini's regime and, on the other hand, demonstrate the infinite possibilities of expression and communication of the exhibitions as "medium". Through the archival and documentary research, this study seeks to describe the "minor" exhibitions that took place in 1932, where avant-garde artists and rationalist architects, that were excluded from official commissions, found their own way to create a different language from both "Novecento" movement and Piacentini's monumentalism.

Porti, trasporti e cultura del mare nelle città d'Italia, per i 150 anni dall'Unità ; Ports, Transport and Marine Culture in the Cities of Italy, for the 150th Anniversary of the Unification
; The celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy also offer the opportunity to question the history and development of this country, particularly in reference to the maritime culture and the system of water transport. In a peninsular country like Italy, with its 7,500 km of waterfront, the presence of ports has always been crucial to economic growth and its success in international markets. But the second half of the twentieth century, cities and their ports have been gradually separated, resulting in situation of conflict and ongoing tensions. Only recently – following the Law 84, 1994 - new forms of 'dialogue' have allowed, on certain occasions, to restart political consultation on the development plans of the port areas and on improving the situation of urban areas close to ports. For all these reasons, the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy can be a significant moment to resume the debate on the role of Italian ports in the history of our country, and possibly increase the potential that they may have, according to the positive and encouraging data of the entire maritime cluster in recent years, at least until the economic crisis of 2008. At the same time, the complex relationship port-city can be analyzed, with a view to mutual recognition of their needs and to the development of their activities in a framework of practical and effective, cooperative spirit, which requires both a greater mutual understanding as well as a more effective targeting to achieve a lasting and sustainable urban quality. The gradual economic globalization and market liberalization have led to a general increase in trade globally and in particular the Mediterranean has become a centre of traffic flows East-West and North-South. Italy, located in the middle of the Mediterranean basin, is now once again become the crossroads of the most important lines of goods and passengers connected world, experiencing a period of intense growth in maritime trade. Except for those ports with a strong presence of the cruise segment, which recorded growth rates of interest, the global economic crisis of 2008 has had very heavy in this sector (freight traffic to trucks and containers). This is also due to some historical gaps of the Mediterranean ports, such as the lack of rail connections to and from the ports, although Port Authorities are trying to bridge the gap both in terms of infrastructural interventions and environmental sustainability, through policies of sharing and coexistence between the port and the surrounding area and through a renewed and widespread 'culture of the sea'. Since only through a cultural approach and mutual education will emerge a new perception of the port in the city and the city in the port. In fact, there are already encouraging signs of a recent appropriation of the port in a positive light and of a recovery of marine culture in several Italian port cities. Through a slow and complex process, articulated through different events, is gaining a new 'feeling' in relation to ports, seen in the key of a resource and as an integral part of a city, provided they respect certain rules necessary for sustainable urban living.

The passage of time has not dulled the interest and fascination of the Prague Spring. Proof of this was provided on the occasion of the celebrations for the fortieth anniversary of the events in Czechoslovakia in 1968, greeted all over Europe including Italy by a packed programme of conferences, exhibitions and publications. This book too stemmed from an initiative organised to mark the anniversary, the conference entitled Primavera di Praga, risveglio europeo. Through the reflections of twelve Italian and Czech writers, it aims to help in the recollection and reconstruction of what was, despite its limitations and contradictions, at once the most considered and the most generous attempt at reform of real socialism.
