Call for Papers for a Workshop in Geisa, Germany on October 9-11, 2023. Deadline: August 20, 2023

Recalling George Marcus's influential writing "Ethnography In/Of the World System", this essay asks how cultural analysis needs to be conceptualized, practiced and infrastructured differently when it moves from a global to a planetary, late industrial frame. This contribution argues that "the Anthropocene" is usefully understood as a particular way of making environmental sense within late industrialism - what industrialism has become as it has cohered, aged, ossified, degraded and retrenched over time, in different ways in different settings. The essay calls for cultural analysis of the Anthropocene as a scientific concept, environmental dynamic, representational challenge and prompt to action in different settings. It also pleads for interdisciplinary collaboration (with cultural analysts in formative roles) and for investment in technical infrastructure to underpin the cultural analysis needed to go forward.

Im Jahr 2013 schrieb das Institut TTN zum zweiten Mal seinen Essay-Preis aus. Das Thema lautete: "Natur verbessern": Grüne Biotechnologie im Zeitalter des Anthropozäns. Unsere Vorstellung von der Natur scheint überholt. Darauf weisen jüngere ökologische Debatten ebenso hin wie die Anthropozän-These: Das Bild von Natur als unberührte Wildnis ist als Illusion entlarvt. Sind wir in ein neues Erdzeitalter eingetreten, in dem zwischen Natürlichem und Künstlichem nicht mehr klar unterschieden werden kann? Welche Konsequenzen hat dies für die Diskussion über Grüne Biotechnologie? Kann die Optimierung von Nutzpflanzen ein Weg sein, um "grüne" Werte und moderne Technologie zu versöhnen? Wie wirkt sich ein neues Naturbild auf einen verantwortlichen Umgang mit der Natur aus? Als Siegertext ging der Essay "Paradoxe Natur. Plädoyer für eine postromantische Ökologie" von Sascha Dickel hervor. Die Jury erachtete aber insbesondere auch die eingereichten Texte von Martin Beckstein und David Ludwig als publikationswürdig. Die drei Texte sind in dieser Publikation abgedruckt.

The belief that »Nature« exists as a blank, stable stage upon which humans act out tragic performances of international relations is no longer tenable. In a world defined by human action, we must reorient our understanding of ourselves, of our environment, and our security.This book considers how decentred and reflexive approaches to security are required to cope with the Anthropocene - the Human Age. Drawing from various disciplines, this bold reinterpretation explores the possibilities for understanding and preparing a future that will look vastly different than the past. The book asks to dig deeper into what it means to be human and secure in an age of ecological exception

The term "anthropocene" refers to mankind's probably irreversible impact on the biosphere of the planet. It also heralds a renewed interest among anthropologists in environmental-human-relations. The paper argues that German-language European ethnology is called upon to reposition itself vis-a-vis these challenges.

The current debate on the Anthropocene is thus far dominated by the natural sciences. This leads to a simplistic analysis of environmental devastation and the underlying changes of human-nature relations. In this commentary, we urge the discipline of political science to enhance its engagement in the debate on the so-called human age and its far-reaching implications. The Anthropocene is characterized first and foremost by complex interactions, non-linear dynamics and tipping points that entail abrupt changes. Against this backdrop, it becomes clear that there can be no simple management of human impacts on the earth system in the Anthropocene. To explore the root causes and potential solutions of human-induced environmental problems, we need to raise questions on key topics, such as prevailing power relations, clashes of interests and norm conflicts. Political theory is moreover highly relevant to address the question of how the existing political institutions could be reformed in the Anthropocene. The discipline of political science plays hence a particular role in the Anthropocene debate. Yet, the Anthropocene should not only remain a critical topic for those political scientists concerned with the environment. Instead, what is needed is a political science contribution that reflects the entire breadth of the discipline to develop adequate response strategies for system-threatening global environmental changes in an interdisciplinary dialogue.

Der Beitrag setzt sich kritisch mit dem neuen raumwissenschaftlichen Leitbegriff "Transformation" auseinander, indem das zugrunde liegende Begründungsnarrativ - das Anthropozän - in den Blick genommen wird. Geschieht dies nämlich nicht, so unterliegt die raumwissenschaftliche Forschung der Gefahr, zu einer a-politischen, räumlich undifferenzierten und eurozentrischen Governance- und Transformationsforschung beizutragen. Stattdessen schlage ich vor, das Politische und Fragen der Macht stärker in den Fokus des theoretischen, methodischen und empirischen Interesses zu rücken und eine generelle Ungleichheitsperspektive einzunehmen. Pluralität und Diversität (in sozialer und räumlicher Perspektive sowie mit Blick auf die Produktion von Wissen) werden so zu zentralen querliegenden Dimensionen einer raumwissenschaftlichen Governance- und Transformationsforschung, die vom Wesen her reflexiv angelegt sein sollte.

Sie beleuchtet strukturelle bodenpolitische Ungleich- heiten und die prekären Anstellungsverhältnisse jener Ar- chitekturmachender, die bei der Betrachtung spektakulärer Neubauten zumeist vergessen werden. So werden die For- men architektonischer Gouvernementalität greifbar. ; Where do the raw materials for the large-scale and process-promissing architectural and infrastructural projects in steel and concrete come from? How is architecture entangled with the global system of supply chains? Who benefits from the distribution of property? What are the working conditions on major European construction sites? And in German architectural offices? How is architecture produced today? The publication deals with environmental destruction and land grabbing by the cement industry in Indonesia and Vietnam, the methods of the sand mafia on the Mekong, and the extraction of lithium in Bolivia for the batteries of our smart cities. It sheds light on structural inequalities in land policy and the precarious employment conditions of those who make architecture, who are usually forgotten in the contemplation of spectacular new buildings. In this way, the forms of architectural governmentality become tangible.

Die aktuelle Debatte um das Anthropozän wird bislang von den Naturwissenschaften dominiert. Dies führt zu einer verkürzten Analyse von Naturzerstörungen und der zugrundliegenden Veränderungen der Mensch-Umwelt-Beziehungen. In diesem Kommentar fordern wir die Politikwissenschaft auf, sich an der Debatte über das sogenannte Menschenzeitalter und seine weitreichenden Implikationen stärker zu beteiligen. Das Anthropozän zeichnet sich insbesondere durch komplexe Wechselwirkungen, nicht-lineare Dynamiken und Kipppunkte aus, an denen Entwicklungen umschlagen. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird deutlich, dass es im Anthropozän kein einfaches Management des menschlichen Einflusses auf das Erdsystem geben kann. Um die Ursachen und potenziellen Lösungen menschengemachter Umweltprobleme zu erforschen, sind Fragen nach Machtverhältnissen, Interessengegensätzen sowie Normkonflikten zentral. Die Politische Theorie ist zudem für die Beantwortung der Frage, wie sich die existierenden politischen Institutionen im Anthropozän reformieren lassen, höchst relevant. Der Politikwissenschaft kommt daher in der Anthropozän-Debatte eine besondere Rolle zu. Das Anthropozän sollte dabei nicht nur ein Thema für die umweltpolitikwissenschaftliche Forschung bleiben. Vielmehr ist ein Beitrag der Politikwissenschaft in der gesamten Breite der Disziplin notwendig, um in einem interdisziplinären Dialog adäquate Antwortstrategien auf systemgefährdende globale Umweltveränderungen zu entwickeln.

Der Beitrag verbindet die Diskussion um die postpolitische Stadt mit der zunehmenden wissenschaftlichen und aktivistischen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Anthropozän, ein Konzept, das die ökologischen und sozialpolitischen Implikationen menschlichen Handelns auf die Erdoberfläche beschreibt. Anhand von drei ausgewählten Fallstudien erkunden wir, wie die spezifisch anthropogene, also menschengemachte, Krise urbaner Luftverschmutzung in künstlerischen Positionen problematisiert wird. Im Kontext des potenziellen Vormarschs von Postpolitik besprechen wir, wie der ambivalente Diskurs des Anthropozäns einerseits Depolitisierung begünstigt und andererseits neue Möglichkeiten für die Repolitisierung globaler Umweltherausforderungen ermöglicht. Erstens zeigen wir anhand von Amy Balkins Projekt "Public Smog" (USA), wie künstlerischer Aktivismus nicht nur internationale Luftemissionshandelsregimes subvertieren kann, sondern durch das Aktivieren von Vorstellungskraft für bessere Luft affektive Utopien erschaffen kann. Zweitens beleuchten wir die Performance "Project Dust" des chinesischen Künstlers Nut Brother, der selbstgesammelte Smogpartikel zu einem Backstein goss und Luftverschmutzung damit gleichzeitig als harte Tatsache und Anlass zur Sorge vermittelt. Drittens diskutieren wir den teils kommerziellen Ansatz des niederländischen Konzeptkünstlers und Designers Daan Roosegaarde, der mit seiner "Smog-Free"-Produktreihe innovative Lösungen für das Problem anthropogener Luftverschmutzung bereitzustellen versucht. Die künstlerischen Projekte umreißen die Streitbarkeit des öffentlichen Gutes Luft und fordern mit affektiven Mitteln zur Politisierung der postpolitischen, luftverschmutzten Stadt auf. ; This article discusses the post-political city within an increasing academic and activist debate about the Anthropocene, which describes the ecological and socio-political implications of human action on the earth's surface. Based on three empirical case studies, we explore how the specifically anthropogenic (i.e., human-made) crisis of urban air pollution is problematized in artistic projects. In the context of the acclaimed rise of postpolitics, we discuss, on the one hand, how the ambivalent discourse of the Anthropocene era favors depoliticization, and, on the other hand, how it opens up new possibilities for the repoliticization of global environmental challenges. First, examining Amy Balkin's project "Public Smog" (USA), we show how artistic activism can not only subvert international air emission trading regimes but also create affective utopias that activate imagination for better air. Second, we discuss the performance "Project Dust" by Chinese artist Nut Brother, who fabricated smog particles he collected into a brick, communicating air pollution as a hard matter of fact, but also a matter of concern. Finally, we discuss the partly commercial approach of Dutch conceptual artist and designer Daan Roosegaarde, who tries to provide innovative solutions to the problem of anthropogenic air pollution with his "Smog Free" product series. Ultimately, we show how the artistic projects outline the disputability of air as a public good and use affective means to call for the politicization of the postpolitical, air-polluted city.

This article proposes an alternative genealogy of security by exploring the nexus of security and care from antiquity to the present. In Greek and Ro-man antiquity, securitas– literally 'carefree' – designated a state of inner peace. With the rise of Christianity, pastoral power introduced a new re-gime of securing care. The pastoral care for the soul is supposed to secure salvation, whereas Christian Caritas established new forms of care for those in need (Fürsorge). Modern biopolitical dispositives of security con-tinued this tradition of care for others with the means of modern welfar-ism. Security dispositives organized new forms of social care (Sozialfürsorge) and became increasingly concerned with the security of supply (Versorgungssicherheit) of vital infrastructural services. Since the second half of the twentieth century, a new form of care for the environ-ment has emerged. The precautionary principle (Vorsorgeprinzip) seeks to prevent irreversible environmental change, whereas new environmental disposal and remediation practices (Entsorgung) cope with the residuals of industrial modernity. The genealogy shows the wide variety and histor-ical flexibility of forms of security care. Conceptually the paper argues that, in contrast to sovereign and statist security technologies like the police and the military, securing care represents a positive, yet nevertheless problem-atic form of security. This provides new insights for a critique of security.

In this article, Katilin Sulyok analyses the growing body of future generations litigation, i.e. lawsuits in which plaintiffs seek protection to long-term needs of future generations typically in domestic climate change and environmental
litigation.

Wir leben im Anthropozän – einer neuen geochronologischen Epoche, die den technischen Eingriffen des Menschen in die Natur geschuldet ist. Unsere kulturelle Evolution hat mit ihrem großflächigen und intensiven Technikeinsatz dazu geführt, dass der Mensch heute zu einem maßgeblichen Faktor für biologische, geologische und atmosphärische Prozesse geworden ist. Der vorliegende Sammelband nimmt – unter besonderer Berücksichtigung des Anthropozäns – aus philosophischer Warte und unter interdisziplinären Gesichtspunkten das Verhältnis zwischen Mensch, Natur und Technik in den Blick. Dabei kommen unter anderem die generelle Rolle der Philosophie in der heutigen Zeit, die geowissenschaftlichen Aspekte des Anthropozäns und die Künstliche Intelligenz zur Sprache. Ein besonderes Augenmerk liegt auf der Frage, welches Bild wir von der Natur haben (sollten) und welches Verhalten die Vernunft von uns im Anthropozän verlangt.
