Places the travel writings of Austrian anthropologist & ethonographer Hugo Adolf Bernatzik in a historical & ideological context defined by 1920s-1930s Africanism & Fordism. It is argued that the idea of Africa allowed European & US readers faced with Fordist transformation to reflect on the crises & fissures in their own cultures (eg, questions of class, sexual freedom/oppression, responsibility) while simultaneously renewing & strengthening their own subject positions through confrontation with a fascinating & repudiated Other. The compromises & displacements in Bernatzik's African writings are considered in this light & in terms of the narrow narrative contract between travel writer & reader. Aspects of Bernatzik's work discussed include his descriptions of the African body & landscape, definitions of Otherness, race-centered aesthetics, & view of nature & history. 18 References. The paper argues that German-language European ethnology is called upon to reposition itself vis-a-vis these challenges.

Islam is the fastest-growing world religion, with over ten million Muslims in the West. As their number increases, so do the misunderstandings and conflicts between Muslims and non-Muslims. Anthropologist Ahmed accurately explains the conflicting cultural values and ignorance of East and West and does an excellent job explaining the differences between the Shi'ite and Sunni branches of Islam, women in Islam, and Muslim minorities. Unfortunately, owing to space constraints, Nigeria and Indonesia are not covered.

The studies collected in this volume explore the sociocultural, conceptual and structural dimensions of variation and change within pluricentric languages, with specific emphasis on the relationship between national varieties. The volume describes patterns of phonetic, lexical and morphosyntactic variation, and language attitudes. It brings together Cognitive Linguistics and sociolinguistics and makes use of advanced empirical methods. The volume addresses a wider audience of scholars including linguists, sociologists, anthropologists, and language planners and teachers. Anthropologists & tourists seem to have a lot in common. The article explores similarities as well as differences between anthropological field research & tourism & relates this to current debates on the impacts of postmodern theory on fieldwork methodology & on the concept of culture. It is suggested that future anthropological research on tourism should investigate the creation of new cultural forms in the context of interaction between tourists & locals in order to overcome the conventional bias that attributes agency mainly to tourists. 45 References.
