Soviet anthropology and contemporary rituals
Whether considered as a status, a set of activities or from a political philosophy point of view, citizenship has been largely explored by political science and legal studies. Such research are meanwhile mainly normative or theoretical and empirical approaches are much more rare, especially in the French context. This HDR explores and discuss an original anthropological approach in the field of citizenship studies; an approach characterised by a will to analyse the social and political "manufacture" of citizenship and to "destabilise" its theories by a critical analysis.

Soviet anthropology and the ethnography of Alaska

Capacities, expertise, empowerment. Rethinking the anthropology of participation
Often studied in the context of political developments and the alleged shift from representative democracy to participatory democracy, participation is discussed here in terms of changes in our anthropological coordinates. The exigencies and expectations of participation are found in many areas that go beyond the political sphere, extending from the business world and its quality circles to the production of self-assembly kits calling for the buyer's assembly skills. This extension of the field of participation is based on a certain number of anthropological presuppositions which ascribe to actors the capacities and competencies they are supposed to have, unless they are invited to enhance them through empowerment strategies in the event that they are failing or insufficient. This paper argues that evaluating people and the configuration of many recent social mechanisms tend increasingly to adjust to this new anthropological paradigm. Such is the case for political participation, new social policies, empowerment training, educational objectives, and development and health policies. Returning more specifically to political participation, the paper shows how these new anthropological coordinates reconfigure by redrawing the division between ordinary and specialized expertise and, in this way, the balance between spaces in which participatory democracy can take place and those that remain confined to technocratic expertise. ; SCOPUS: ar.j ; info:eu-repo/semantics/published

The ethnic situation in the Soviet Union as reflected in Soviet anthropology
In: Cahiers du monde russe et soviétique, Band 31, Heft 2, S. 213-221
Anatoly Khazanov, The ethnic situation in the Soviet Union as reflected in Soviet anthropology.
The main aim of this paper is to demoastrate that despite the fact that in the Soviet Union anthropology is claimed to be the science of ethnicity, and that Soviet anthropologists have paid particular attention to ethnic studies, they have failed to describe and to adequately estimate modem ethnic developments in the USSR. Instead, they preferred, or simply had to provide "scientific" arguments in support of the Party line. Only on rare occasions and in a semi-Aesopian language few of them pointed out the facts that in specific cases might be considered as contradicting official claims.
Even now, in the period of glasnosť, the ethnic situation in the Soviet Union is much more boldly discussed by the public and by representatives of other disciplines than by a majority of Soviet anthropologists. A question may be asked, whether this fact is connected with the circumstances within Soviet anthropology itself which have led to a reluctance or resistance by some members of its establishment to admit old sins and new realities.

For a Religious Anthropology of Maoism in Nepal ; Pour une anthropologie religieuse du maoïsme népalais
International audience ; The role of the Maoists in modern Nepal is problematic as society remains widely based on the Hindu monarchy. Such an issue may contribute in a significant way to the anthropological approach of revolutionary phenomena. In Nepal, the Maoists' discourse on religion reflects conceptions broadly divergent from the materialist philosophy they are supposed to communicate. The absence of any radical rejection of religion is particularly noticeable. The Nepalese Maoism considers that the present society is the product of a process of decadence. The revolution will bring it back to the golden age that preceded the appearance of monarchy and castes. In many ways, this philosophy concurs with the South-Asian religious fundamentalisms. Nepalese Maoism attempts to construct a coherent vision of the world which responds to the paradoxical preoccupations of present society, i.e. criticism of tradition and a search for national identity.
