From Herbert Agar's book, Land of the Free, this print presents a view into the agrarian lifestyle of American farmers in the early-1900s. During this time, Americans were dealing with the aftermath of World War I and during the Great Depression. In order to combat the economic crisis at the time, President Roosevelt authorized the New Deal, a series of programs enacted between 1933 and 1938. As part of this deal, the Public Works of Art Project (PWAP) was created to employ artists and promote nationalism among classes. Artists were hired to incorporate aspects of the "American scene" into their works. These were featured in various locations, including the White House and House of Representatives. This print showcases the agricultural struggle of the time. Full economic recovery relied upon the recovery of agriculture, but raising farm prices only meant higher food prices and a lower appeal to farming. Additionally, farmers faced a continual cycle of debt brought upon by the need to obtain modern farming machinery in order to mass produce crops for the increasing population. Still, some farmers were less affected by the consequences of war and modernity and continued to live simple lives. Contrasting his other works showcasing cityscapes, industrialism, and architecture, Agar's print displays a rural landscape with no substantial modernization. Much like the other prints in the book, the monochromatic color evokes a nostalgic feeling through the scene. Various farmers are depicted working the land in hand-spun clothing and with rudimentary tools. The background depicts an uneven, rough terrain with farm houses blending into the hills. Although man has the upper hand over nature, they are seen working together in unison to provide for one another. Contrasting, their city counterparts, the farmers do not show the need for more industrialization. Farming was a proud occupation, showcasing people's love for the land with this simple form of patriotism. Similar to that on Agar's city print, a haunting feeling lingers due to the lack of expression in the piece. The simplistic design and absence of details makes the print less about this one particular farm and more about the unification between farmers to preserve the symbolic American pastoral landscape. Additionally, the farmers seem too occupied with their work; unnerved and unaware of the forthcoming industrialization bound to seep its way into the countryside. Their minimally disrupted landscape about to torn apart. —Luisa Estrada, 2019 Postcard of illustration from Herbert Agar's thirty-two paged book "Land of the Free." This book was published by Houghton Mifflin Co. The original painting is owned by the United States Government. Farmers work the land in a hilly, almost surrealist distortion of typical American scenery. Description under the illustration reads, "PWA artists interpret the American scene. An important tactic throughout World War II was the usage of propaganda cartoons that were widely distributed -- many with the motive of sowing dissent and further degrading morale within respective groups. This colored print, titled Australia Screams, has no exact date associated with it, but through an analysis of the iconography, stylistic choices made, as well as the simultaneously occurring historical events, it can be inferred that this was most likely produced in the early 1940s. There is no signature on the print, but again through visual analysis it can be assumed that it was made by an enemy of the Allied Forces. At the top left corner reads the title, "Australia Screams". Below, a wounded and concerned Australian soldier is depicted standing on the country of New Guinea and is holding a rifle. The caption above him reads, "The Aussie: What was that scream? Something up?" Beside him is an American soldier, standing on the country of Australia, who looks back towards the Australian officer. This soldier is shown holding a woman who is clearly struggling to get out of his grasp. Her breasts are exposed and the text next to them reads, "The Yank: Sh. sh. Quiet, girlie. Calm yourself. He'll be on the next casualty list. No worry." An American flag has been placed down next to them. There is nothing on the back side of the print, but the clear folds may indicate that this piece was folded up and possibly distributed from the air. During the early 1940s, Australia, who at this time was a part of the Allied forces, played a large role in the Pacific Theater of war between the Allies and Japan. The situation in the Pacific Theater was worsening and there were constant threats of the Japanese invading Northern Australia. This caused widespread panic and incited drastic measures to be taken by Australian government to protect the country and its territories. One of these measures was the deployment of U.S. soldiers in Australia, which in the beginning was a welcomed and positive event. However, attitudes around this deployment quickly deteriorated, especially among Australian soldiers themselves who were being deployed around the Pacific while their American allies were at home with their women and families, being higher paid and receiving more benefits. The Battle of Brisbane, the result of escalating tensions, led to two nights of rioting between Australians and U.S. troops on November 26–27, 1942, including hundreds of casualties and one Australian death. I argue that this print was made by enemy forces, specifically Japan, to further exploit and provoke tensions between American and Australian allies and in turn advance their own political agenda. The style of this cartoon is reminiscent of Japanese political propaganda of this time (cf. Sterling W. Schallert Collection, WVM Mss 104, https://wisvetsmuseum.com/blog/japanese_propaganda_wwii/). This is shown through the similarly depicted American figures, as they are all exaggerated with prominent features (ie. scrunched up faces, large and emphasized bodies and facial expressions, etc.). It is also shown through their common use of symbolism within propaganda art; the Australian soldier's broken bayonet could be a metaphor for a flaccid penis, thus reflecting the loss of manhood and threat many Australians felt by American soldiers on the Australian homefront with complete access to wives and girlfriends while they were stationed overseas. This piece must have been successful in evoking a specific type of anger between the Allies and in creating a disruption, as a penis is very clearly drawn onto the print on the American soldier. This was, again, to probably emphasize the sexual threat of Americans. While specifics of the piece are still unclear, this print was done with the purpose of swaying or influencing specific groups and was often effective in inciting anger, discontent, and more. Additional copies of this piece have been found in the USMC Archives (COLL/3541) and in the Duke University Libraries, Broadsides and Ephemera Collection (bdsja10001). Featured in Herbert Agar's book of American landscape prints, Land of the Free, this print speaks to civil agitation brought upon by the industrialization in the early-1900s. Agar was a reputable American journalist, historian, and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1934. He documented post-World War crises and their effects on American government, society, and economy. The prints featured in Land of the Free were made possible through the courtesy of the Public Works of Art Project (PWAP). During the Great Depression, this program was started to employ artists as part of the New Deal. Artists working for PWAP were commissioned to depict the American scene; their art was featured in various locations, including the White House and House of Representatives. This economic program helped showcase the talent of many up-and-coming artists while lowering the unemployment rate. This print reflects the civil agitation and unrest brought upon by the industrialization in the early-1900s. Between the 1880s and the 1930s, urbanization expanded rapidly to major cities drawing the attention of young farmers and millions of immigrants seeking a better life. People flocked to major cities with the hopes of more opportunities and a better future. With these technological and social advancements came an overwhelming sense of anxiety particularly because people were dealing with the aftermath of World War I and held in the midst of the Great Depression. Depicted here are minimalistic buildings with some attention to detail and a hazy background. The dull and somber quality of the print reflects the apprehension and chaos felt by citizens as their pastoral landscapes dwindled into architectural clusters. Formerly depicted as an agrarian society, the shift to industrialize brought tension to generations losing their lands to factories. By excluding natural elements, the artist is drawing more attention to the tension caused by sudden change. The print exudes an almost desolate and isolating notion by having some of the buildings fade off in the distance with a lone chimney, hinting at human presence. The buildings are purposely crammed against one another displaying the new grid system that accompanied industrialization. In turn, the preservation of national identity became a major political concern, after the once-perfect rural landscapes that defined America were being turned into building grounds. Among his other works, Agar features prints contrasting developed cities like this one, with the slow development and industrialization seen in rural parts of America, like the other Agar print depicting an agrarian landscape. This American scene depicts the average day of the hardworking farmer and the pleasure of the job. Yet, by capturing this moment the artist hones in on the perfect past that will be no more. For even farming has been industrialized and massively altered today. —Luisa Estrada, 2019 Description under the illustration reads, "PWA artists interpret the American scene.
