Flush with the victory of World War II, America faced an expansive industrial and agricultural landscape that had been focused on war. As factories re-tooled themselves from military production to a domestic market, kitchen appliances, metal cabinets, plastics, and synthetic fabrics appeared at the same time that processed and packaged foods inspired by the efficiency and development of MREs became available for public consumption. Simultaneously, a pent-up need for housing and an end to the deprivation of the Great Depression and war led Americans to embrace new approaches to design and construction. The development of suburbs with affordable single-family houses, standardized kitchen furnishings, and the open plan reflected new attitudes towards living. The accessibility of a variety of foods and time-saving preparations such as cake mixes and canned fruits complemented those attitudes. In this study of mid-century Memphis, the synchronous qualities of cultivation, production, presentation, and consumption in kitchen design and foodways are analyzed to demonstrate an inextricable relationship between the design of place and the culture of food. Memphis was a Southern city steeped in regional tradition but modernizing rapidly while absorbing the national and international dynamics of social and economic changes during the Cold War. Local factors of race, gender, and class on this growth affected the convergence of new ideas in kitchen design and foodways. Regional and national media such as newspapers, magazines, and the rise of television saturated the public with images of idyllic suburban life, particularly available to middle-class whites despite the increased appearance of a black middle-class culture flourishing in the same modern environment. Whether spotlighting the femininity of Betty Crocker or the favorite appetizer of a local socialite, the growing publication of cookbooks fueled a desire for new kitchens and the presentation of new foods. The convergence of kitchen design and foodways illustrated ...

; This article proposes a reading on how "good taste" was the basis to plan power spaces that would strengthen and legitimize the political project of the Argentine Confederation under the presidency of Justo José de Urquiza. It is examined the way in which Urquiza developed certain architectural sensibility to plan his space, therefore employing Pietro Fossati, who through the beaux-arts criteria transformed the house of Urquiza into the place of a modern sovereign. As for the design of the capital city, Santiago Danucio built urban facades to demonstrate the authority of the government. Thus, generating certain good taste principals, through the use of classical antiquity elements and rules. ; Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educación

Conservation theory is determined by the concept of memory. Collective memory is an accumulation of events remembered by a group who shared and involved in shaping the memory. It plays an important role to articulate meaning that relevant to the current context, needs, and agenda. In old quarter of Jakarta, the concept of memory was produced as a collective effort to reconstruct Kampung Kunir which had been evicted in 2015. With its strategic location, it is impossible to exclude the revitalization of Kota Tua to its enclave surrounding. The community surrounding Kota Tua experiencing a conflict of inclusion when the revitalization process begun. Kota Tua has become tourism object while, in reality, it is surrounded by kampungs, creating a distance between the local residents and Kota Tua. After the eviction of Kampung Kunir, the government create a program to reconstruct the settlement for several families who resist to live there. A group of architect, ASF-Indonesia, was involve in facilitating physical and historical mapping, and projecting the new Kampung Kunir. Thus the reconstruction of Kampung Kunir can be seen as an effort from the community to redefine conservation and question for whom the conservation is. This paper seeks to elucidate how collective memory plays as an important aspect to conserve historical sites.

(2020) report a novel role for the TB1 transcription factor gene in wheat, controlling plant height. This gene and its orthologues have long been known to affect branching in a number of crops and plant species. Its involvement in the determination of plant height opens up new avenues for the modification of this key trait, which affects multiple agronomic aspects of annual crops, from emergence to harvest index. ; The authors receive strategic funding from the Government of Aragón, research group A08-17R, the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation [AGL2016-80967-R], the UK Biosciences and Biotechnology Research Council [BB/P016855/1], the National Sciences Foundation [1127112], and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory. ; Peer reviewed

Cloud computing is changing the way organizations approach technology and its infrastructure. However, in spite of its attractiveness, cloud computing can be seen as a threat in terms of compliance. Given its intrinsic distributed nature, regulations and laws may differ and customers and cloud providers must find a way to balance increasing compliance pressures with cloud computing benefits. In this paper, the authors present a framework aimed to help organizations to cope with compliance aspects in their cloud-oriented environments. Built upon current literature on the topic and qualitative approaches, the framework has been implemented in two organizations. Results from its contribution are encouraging, leading to adopter organizations to less reported compliance violations and higher contribution of cloud computing to overall quality of service and organizational compliance management.

After the English-led invasion of Ireland, between 1169 and 1172, the country was run by Anglo-Irish lords—English and Welsh men gifted with Irish land and titles for their service to the English King. Of these families, the Butlers were one of the three most powerful in the country. The 3rd and 4th Earls of Ormond, both named James Butler, each held the highest title in Ireland, Lord Lieutenant, multiple times as well as being successful military leaders. Add to this a large income from all the wine revenues of the country, and the Butlers were a force to be reckoned with. This thesis examines the Butlers in their seat of power, Kilkenny, to determine the connection between the two. It is apparent, by examining not only their policies but their surroundings, that the Butlers and Kilkenny had a mutually beneficial relationship. The Butlers profited from the extensive land they owned, the feudal nature of Ireland, and the trade in the city, and similarly helped the town prosper by building defensive fortifications, strengthening and expanding the city, and running the government efficiently. The actions of the Butlers and the town of Kilkenny prove that the Butlers were caught between the cultures of both England and Gaelic Ireland, as was typical of most of the Anglo-Irish ruling class.

This paper is part of a research project whose mission is to explore the contribution of serious games to the co-construction of just regions and cities, expanding on previous work on spatial justice (Lévy, Fauchille, Póvoas, 2018). Serious games are here defined as settings whose purpose is not primarily to entertain but to scaffold players simulated and iterative actions in low risk collective environments, orienting active play to the exploration of societal problems (Abt, 1970).This project approaches the co-construction of just spatial development by framing the conception and the use of games within a reinterpretation of the social contract of Hobbes, Rousseau and Rawls as a procedural device that operates in concrete social life, with regard to substantive topics. My hypothesis is that serious games can be instrumental in this finality, instituting citizens as full actors in the fabrication of public policy decisions towards more just geographies. This paper makes a contribution – through the angle of interactive democracy (Lévy, 2019) – to the ongoing debate that seeks to connect serious games and the fabrication of political objects. Combining deliberative and consultative activities to complement, rather than oppose, representative democracy, the concept and practices of interactive democracy propose interfaces and continuous communication channels between the political society (citizens, associations, etc.) and the political sphere. This paradigm lies on the principle that ordinary citizens can combine freedom of proposition with responsibility in dialogue and in co-decision and brings to the fore the role of mediation. After introducing the background of this research, this paper will advance two complementary contributions. Firstly, I will briefly review the history of serious games, sketching the process of incremental complexity through which the potential of games for mediation has unfolded in the last six decades. From an urban perspective, we can identify four stages in the evolution of game ...

In recent years, advances in wireless communications, microelectronics and sensing technology have allowed a production of computationally capable low-cost miniature devices that can be used in different innovative solutions. Due to constant increase of energy consumption, and since residential sector has been identified as one the most energy demanding, there exists a strong interest in exploitation of connected smart devices with the aim of improving energy efficiency, user comfort and the overall quality of life. The Smart Energy Manager based on an IoT platform which will be presented in this paper aims to reach the aforementioned goals with the combination of monitoring and control devices with the advanced energy services capable of analyzing the collected data and providing control actions and suggestions aimed at the end users via intuitive end-user applications. Contemporary mega-events are a design and political phenomenon, encompassing all scales of design practice and serving as an exemplar of a global imaginary realised in local space. They combine placemaking with national and city branding, manifested through extravagant buildings, facilities, transport infrastructure, logos, uniforms and slogans – all of which present design challenges given their high profile and cost. This chapter considers the contemporary mega-event, specifically Olympics and EXPOs, from their historical evolution (World Fairs, Biennales) to the expansive and controversial events that punctuate the international calendar and tourist itinerary. The design of mega-events is reflected through the iconic buildings and components that make up the visual feast that these events seek to engender – from costumes, mascots and signs, to the masterplans and computer-generated visions that are employed to project the mega-event and site into the future.

Every old city grows up following some finite principles. There has to be potential in its location and planning, definite prospects of economy and, with its fair amount of challenges, shall also be able to sustain itself over centuries. Calcutta or Kolkata grew up as a trading capital for the East India Company in the early eighteenth century and finally reached a zenith during British rule over the next one hundred years or so, flourishing as a trading port, political headquarters and a grand economic center. But it also grew up to be a city of culture and excellence. In trying to attribute such characteristics to this great city of our times, this paper delves into a study of one pocket of such development, to point out at not only the tangible forms of the precinct, but also the somewhat grey and abstract areas of activity, which has made the city more livable and sustainable, in the long run.
