Archives and Archival Documents in Ancient Societies
This book, part of a series aiming to investigate the legal systems of ancient societies through a document-based, comparative approach, focuses on the study of archives and archival records and their interplay with the workings of administrative and political systems. The papers are arranged in four sections dealing with the Ancient Near East, Classical Greece, the Persian Tradition and the Hellenistic World, and the Roman Empire. The themes touched upon chronologically span from the early second millennium B.C. to the late Roman Empire and geographically range from Mesopotamia to the Western Mediterranean. The archives considered, public and private, are conspicuous for their variety and reflect diverse archival concepts and traditions but a number of common patterns also emerge in respect to their physical organization, to the classification of texts, the function of record-keeping and the role of seals. We are entitled to speak of a recurring 'archival behaviour'.

Annotating for transparent inquiry: making archival documents accessible
Historical or political science research using primary source evidence faces a major barrier to transparency and replicability: the archival documents used are often difficult to access. The Annotation for Transparent Inquiry Initiative developed a digital overlay tool that enables researchers to create enhanced annotations in articles and link to digital copies of archival sources in trusted repositories. Dr Joseph O'Mahoney was involved in the project to pilot this tool and has published a practical guide based on his experience.

Mass Digitization of Archival Documents using Mobile Phones
The final publication is available via https://doi.org/10.1145/3151509.3151526 . ; Digital copies of historical documents are needed for the Digital Humanities. Currently, cameras of standard mobile phones are able to capture documents with a resolution of about 330 dpi for document sizes up to DIN A4 (German standard, 297 x 210 mm), which allows a digitization of documents using a standard device. Thus, scholars are able to take images of documents in archives themselves without the need of book scanners or other devices. This paper presents a scanning app, which comprises a real time page detection, quality assessment (focus measure) and an automated detection of a page turn over if books are scanned. Additionally, a portable device - the ScanTent - to place the mobile phone during scanning is presented. The page detection is evaluated on the ICDAR2015 SmartDoc competition dataset and shows a reliable page detection with an average Jaccard index of 75%. ; European Union's Horizon 2020
