Italian literature emerged around 1600 at the intersection of poetological and religious attempts at standardization and under the attentive watch of a literary community and its critical discussions as well as the censorship and inquisition of the Counter-Reformation. This volume sheds light on creativity under the conditions of this twofold "observance" by looking at texts from various genres written between ca. 1550 and 1650.
Markus Nehl focuses on black authors who, from a 21st-century perspective, revisit slavery in the U.S., Ghana, South Africa, Canada and Jamaica. Nehl's provocative readings of Toni Morrison's A Mercy, Saidiya Hartman's Lose Your Mother, Yvette Christiansë's Unconfessed, Lawrence Hill's The Book of Negroesand Marlon James' The Book of Night Women delineate how these texts engage in a fruitful dialogue with African diaspora theory about the complex relation between the local and transnational and the enduring effects of slavery. Reflecting on the ethics of narration, this study is particularly attentive to the risks of representing anti-black violence and to the intricacies involved in (re-)appropriating slavery's archive.
In the US or in the UK, the presence of institutional investors in real estate markets is an old phenomenon. Specifically, Real Estate Investment Trusts are an old industry. Due to a difference in tax law, the market share of REITs in Germany has been minimal until very recently. Now the legislator has extended the tax privileges held by real estate funds to REITs, expecting that the change will make Germany an attractive place for international investors in these markets. While the effect on capital markets is planned, the German legislator has not been very attentive to likely side effects on the proper functioning of real estate law, landlord and tenant law, and zoning law. The paper analyses these effects, and points to potential legislative concerns.
W. G. Sebald's "The Rings of Saturn" resists genre classification: Neither novel nor mere travel literature, it combines report with fiction, historical anecdotes with melancholy musings, explanations of economic and political facts with accounts of personal anxieties. This vast material, however, is joined by a semiotic regard, a way of looking at the world attentive on signs and their use. Hence, some of the far-ranging narratives, observations and reflections, often barely connected by associations of the narrator, can be systematically linked by a semiotic methodology. In this article, semiotic categories like index, icon and symbol, encoding, decoding and recoding, change of meaning and pattern recognition are applied to different levels of the text. The semiotic approach thus integrates the disparate episodes in "The Rings of Saturn", revealing them as being linked by their interest in signs and signification. In this way, semiotics proves itself as a method for literary studies.
Building on a well founded criticism of gaps in the usual memory and remembrance concepts, and with the help of contemporary projects of remembrance work, Karsten Michael Drohsel develops a social figure for the methodization of a new remembrance that can be individually practiced and experienced. This is assisted by practices of attentive walking, which were developed from flânerie. The central momentum of the study lies in the question for the translation and handing over of memories in places where memories arise or to which they can be tied. This new form of remembrance activity includes individual and collective remembering into the existing discourse of memory and remembrance and elaborates the potentials of both modes without determining them. [EN] While initially criticism of liberal democracy was the aspect of Carl Schmitt's work which received attention, since the end of the Cold War interest has shifted towards his philosophy of international relations. Throughout this article it is shown that to a large extent Jürgen Habermas' attentive reading of certain Schmitt texts follows in these steps. Rather than naively using Schmitt's categories, Habermas practices a critical appropriation of his explanatory potential. Nevertheless, he manifests enormous reservations regarding the elongated shadow cast by his ideas and, in particular, by his concept of the political which is so prevalent today in alternative political circles. ; Peer reviewed
For at least two centuries, democratic representation has been at the center of debate. Should elected representatives express the views of the majority, or do they have the discretion to interpret their constituents' interests? How can representatives balance the desires of their parties and their electors? What should be done to strengthen the representation of groups that have been excluded from the political system? Representative democracy itself remains frequently contested, regarded as incapable of reflecting the will of the masses, or inadequate for today's global governance. Recently, however, this view of democratic representation has been under attack for its failure to capture the performative and constructive elements of the process of representation, and a new literature more attentive to these aspects of the relationship between representatives and the represented has arisen. In Creating Political Presence, a diverse and international group of scholars explores the implications of such a turn. Two broad, overlapping perspectives emerge. In the first section, the contributions investigate how political representation relates to empowerment, either facilitating or interfering with the capacity of citizens to develop autonomous judgment in collective decision making. Contributions in the second section look at representation from the perspective of inclusion, focusing on how representative relationships and claims articulate the demands of those who are excluded or have no voice. The final section examines political representation from a more systemic perspective, exploring its broader environmental conditions and the way it acquires democratic legitimacy.

In this paper the competitive-legal issue is discussed: the free gift. The free gift is a special form of the package deal and is existent, if a commodity or service is offered at no extra cost in addition to a nongratuitous staple. The acquisition of the free gift has to be contingent on the conclusion of the deal, i.e. an inner connection is necessary in such a manner that the free gift with sales is offered with regard to the acquisition of the staple. Because of this dependence it is impartially adequate to influence the customer in his decision to acquire the staple. In the past, the free gift as a means of sales promotion was considered controversial and was principally forbidden by the regulation governing free gifts with sales. Based on the approach that competition should be oriented on quality and price-worthiness, the free gift was seen as an unobjective instrument which was capable to tempt the consumer to irrational contemplations and decisions. In July 2001, the regulation governing free gifts with sales was cancelled without substitution. Since then, free gifts are generally allowed. With the abrogation of the regulation governing free gifts with sales the legislator took into account the modified consumer approach. Since the mid nineties, the jurisdiction increasingly applied the concept of a judicious average consumer, who is attentive to the situation and capable to critically encounter the attraction force of free gifts.Free gifts are subject to the general competitive-legal boundaries of the law against unfair competition. In the summer of 2004, this law experienced a fundamental alteration. The legitimacy of free gifts is indeed partially regulated in the new law against unfair competition, but not exclusively. The subject of this paper, besides to give an overview of the law-historical development of free gifts, is the legal evaluation of these on the basis of the new law against unfair competition in particular.Furthermore, an outlook on the legal position in Austria is conducted. ; Over the last decade sustainable development has become a central topic for a substantial and viable development of a modern society in the face of a more accurate perception of environmental problems. More and more sustainable development is being considered the if not only solution for global ecological, social, and political problems. Especially education plays an important role when setting processes of sustainability in motion and contributing to a positive development of our future. The aim of this thesis is to analyze how and to what extent experiencing nature being used as a didactic method influences environmental behavior. The first part gives a historic survey and an analytical reflection of the term "sustainable development" in order to make it more understandable. The second part covers didactic concepts of an education for sustainable development and focuses on the most important teaching aims. The importance of experiencing nature for the development of the child and its impact on the environmental behavior are the main subjects of the third part. Finally, an analysis of the literature on the subject examines the relevance and importance of integrating nature experiences in the education for sustainable development. The results of this analysis show that under certain circumstances attentive nature experiences support and guide the development of the child in a positive way. Regarding the effect which nature experiences have on environmental behavior, it has to be stated that these experiences can create an emotional basis for environmental behavior. A direct influence on environmental behavior can be neglected. The ingration of nature experiences in the eduction for sustainable development turns out to be difficult since the concept of nature, according to the definition of the United Nations, is an anthropocentric one. This means, nature is not being protected for its own sake, but in order to ensure its availability for the human being. When it comes to experiencing nature and establishing a positive connection to nature humans have to declare themselves as a part of nature. In order to integrate nature experiences into educational processes sensibly, the relationship of nature and human being has to be discussed and changed in direction of seeing humans as a part of nature. ; Raw fermented sausages are meat products commonly spread in the European Union. They are made from raw meat without any heat treatment, so the growth of the most spoilage bacteria is inhibited in these products by low water activity (< 0.9) and low pH-values (ranging from 4.8 to 5.6). Pathogenic bacteria may, however, survive without being finally eliminated under these conditions. For a long time, curing has been the conservation technique widely used to prolong the shelf-life of fermented sausages. Nitrite (in the form of sodium nitrite) was added to fermented meat due to its contribution to organoleptic quality and its ability to inhibit the growth of Clostridium botulinum. Although the addition of nitrite or nitrate as curing agent to many meat products has been a common practice for preservation, there are no well-founded scientific data concerning the actual impact of different concentrations of sodium nitrite on relevant food borne bacteria. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of different sodium nitrite concentrations (0, 100, 150, 200 mg kg-1) on the survival of Listeria monocytogenes, shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) and Salmonella spp. in raw fermented sausages. For this purpose, several batches of different types of short fermented raw sausage (spreadable and sliceable) were therefore produced and artificially contaminated with the pathogenic bacteria mentioned above. Our investigations showed that in first order dynamic effects and an attentive control of the ripening programs reduce the bacterial count. But they also demonstrate clearly the positive effect of sodium nitrite as antimicrobial additive in raw fermented sausages. Only with sodium nitrite a growth of Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes in raw fermented sausage was avoided. However, the formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines from nitrate and nitrite is a major health issue. Consumers' concerns about antibiotics, hormones and chemical additives connected with conventionally produced foods, lead to a raising popularity of organically produced foods. Based on the expending recruitments for natural products without any chemical preservatives, conventional curing agents like nitrite should replaced in organic or natural products by ingredients on an herbal basis. Indirect curing is a process that should utilizes ingredients with high amount of naturally occurring nitrate and a bacterial starter culture with a nitrate reductase activity to provide quality, sensory attributes and microbiological safety similar to conventionally cured meats. In the second part a commercial nitrate-containing plant extract was tested. For this purpose, the sausage batter was artificially contaminated with Salmonella spp., shigatoxin-producing Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes. We found that the numbers of Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes increased rapidly between 1 to 2 log10 cfu g-1 in sausages produced with the nitrate containing plant extract. Our results showed that the tested extract could not avoid the outgrowth of the pathogens, hence leading to a microbiological hazard. The microbiological stability of the product and the dying off of the pathogens is enhanced by the exclusive combination of sodium nitrite and a sufficient decrease in water activity and pH-value.
