The sociol of sci involves study of the interactions between sci, technology & society. This includes the study of sci as culture, as a useful art, & as a destructive agent. It also includes the nature of discovery, covering such factors as technological stimulus, econ demand, soc climate & the personalities of the individual discoverers or innovators. These studies have been stimulated by the demand for nat'l sci policies, & there has been a search for models of the relation between sci, technology & society. The most common model is that which links pure sci'fic curiosity with organized basic res, applied res, technological development, & production for use. This is commonly known as the innovation continuum. The actual working of this continnum was Illustrated by a case history, the Development of Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy in the laboratories of CSIRO, Australia's nat'l res org. The case study demonstrates that the working of a continuum can be anomalous & subject to serious gaps, esp because of the problems of internat'l transfer of knowledge. AA.
