Papers of Judge Andrew Inglis Clark (1848-1907), known for the "Hare Clark electoral system" and his work on the Australian constitution for federation, and his son Justice Andrew Inglis Clark (1882-'1953). Andrew Inglis Clark sr. was the son of Ann (Inglis) and Alexander Russell Clark, (1809-1894), an engineer, who settled in Tasmania in 1833 and undertook contracts such as the Port Arthur water and tread corn mill, works at the coal mines and Launceston water works. A.I. Clark served as an engineering apprentice with his father, but turned to Law later. With the papers is a letter book of the father, A. R. Clark, 1842 - 1846 relating to some of his contracts. Papers of A.I. Clark sr. include letters received from friends and colleagues, including american lawyers, a few papers relating to his legal practice, letters of appointment to political offices, papers relating to Australian federation and the Australian constitution and drafts of essays, speeches or articles on law, politics, philosophy and religion. Discussion by Gill about a case Clark was handling and the help that Gill was able to provide. Mrs Webster is fast becoming friends with Gill's sister and they are 'going in strong' on the Women's Suffrage question. Gill hopes to get a Bill introduced before parliament soon, dealing with the admission question, and if it doesn't happen he will look at South Australia next. C4/C152

Just a short, reflective letter acknowledging all the pressures on Clark's time but hoping to hear from him soon, especially for him to tell all about a particular case involving Clark's brother. C4/C151

Has taken opinions from many friends in the profession about the question raised by Clark and believes that he can't fail on the main issue of the forfeiture clause and the other point is very arguable. Again is not content with his lot but hoping to be in Hobart for Christmas. Has purchased some works of Wordsworth and is totally enthralled. C4/C150

A brief letter enclosing a report by the detective employed on behalf of Clark's client and requesting payment of his services. Gill's health has been fine and he is still very busy. Wintle gives a gloomy account of the collapse of the mining industry in Tasmania. C4/C147

Thanks Clark for recommending him to a solicitor for some work. Has had several interviews with Wolfe Fink who was highly impressed with Clark after his visit to Tasmania. Judges have framed a rule to extend reciprocity between states but doubts the rule will be promulgated untill Easter term. C4/C146

This letter is a preliminary reply to Clark's last letter concerning Gill's prospects in Tasmania, and goes on to espouse various scenarios, but is grateful and confidant in the knowledge that Clark has Gill's interests in hand. C4/C149
