This chapter describes, justifies, presents the pros and cons of and illustrates the use of simulation
modeling as a handy, cost-effective and agile tool for policymakers. Simulation modeling
is flexible enough to accommodate different levels of detail, precision and time frameworks. It
also serves the purpose of a concrete communication platform that facilitates scenario analysis,
what-if alternatives and forward looking. We specifically define agent-based modeling within
the larger simulation domain, provide a brief overview of other computation modeling methodologies
and discuss the concepts of multiple models, verification, validation and calibration.
The conceptual framework section closes with a discussion of advantages and disadvantages of
using simulation modeling for policy at various stages of implementation. Finally, we present
a panorama of actual applications of simulation modeling in policy, with an emphasis on economic
analysis.

»Regulation of Algorithmic Decision-Making. A Fundamental Rights Approach in the Context of Article 22 GDPR«: Automated decisions are part of our everyday lives: state institutions and private actors use algorithms in many areas of life to make personal decision-making processes more rational and efficient. The premises of automated decision-making challenge the protection of fundamental rights. Based on the genesis in French law and today's interpretation of Article 22 of the General Data Protection Regulation, the question of how the regulation of automated decision-making in the public and private sector can be justified from a fundamental rights perspective is explored.

Living with Energy Poverty: Perspectives from the Global North and South expands our collective understanding of energy poverty and deepens our recognition of the phenomenon by engaging with the lived experiences of energy-poor households across different contexts.
Understanding the lived experience of energy poverty is an essential component in the design of any effort to alleviate what is fundamentally a deep-rooted, multi-faceted, wickedly complex problem. This requires a nuanced understanding of the causal factors and the research methods that can respond to the flexible spatial and temporal nature of the condition, as well as its wellbeing and justice implications. Drawing together the expertise and connectedness of authors from the Global South and North, this book presents novel approaches to understanding the often hidden forms of domestic energy deprivation. Case studies from 20 countries provide critical perspectives on this phenomenon while analysing the policy practices, government strategy, and sustainability implications of divergent manifestations. The book takes a multidimensional perspective, challenging the bias towards energy production and service provision, which often do not align with the aspirations and realities of energy households across global contexts, thus facilitating a useful dialogue on the nature of energy poverty.
The book is a timely source for policymakers, practitioners, and scholars seeking fresh, diverse insights into the everyday reality of energy poverty and wanting to better understand the challenges a people-centred, just energy transition can present.

"In More Than Words: Turn #MeToo into #ISaidSomething, Kirsten Anderson shares her remarkable journey from the debilitating despair of harassment to hope. After years of employment in a verbally abusive environment at the Iowa Statehouse, she lost her identity as an assertive, career-minded, confident, and empowered woman. Her relationship with her toxic employer ended when she was fired just hours after issuing a formal complaint. A legal and personal journey ensued. Anderson won her case. Since then, she has made it her mission to educate others about the complexities of sexual harassment, bullying, and retaliation in the workplace. By sharing the realities targets of harassment face, she intends to educate readers, help targets move forward and initiate change in toxic work environments to eliminate harassment once and for all"--
The idea of improvisation, broadly defined, has been integral to our imagination of the medieval musical past. It can be related to many elements of production: to the act of un-notated creation; to the manipulation and amplification of notated materials; to our observance of rigid rules and formulae; or to spontaneous freedom. Likely a product of the Carolingian Renaissance, this is the first medieval music treatise to address an aspect of chant performance that does not only relate to a memorized repertoire, but includes an unwritten practice of extemporizing an accompanying voice to a pre-given melody. The art of "coloration" or the ornamentation of a line, whether polyphonic or monophonic, had been an integral part of extemporization since at least the time of the Ad organum faciendum treatises. When planning author's ontological inquiries, the author's would do well to remember the possible existence of creativity that is not inspired, or ephemerality that is not performer- or expression-centered.
