Zachar Prilepin is a star in his homeland. His first novel, translated into German, was enthusiastically received in this country as well. Apparently, a crucial role in this reception is played less by the literary quality of his work than by his colourful personality. Prilepin is considered a 'leftwing radical' and staunch opponent of Vladmir Putin. In fact, he represents a populist mixture of nationalism, resentments, and Soviet nostalgia.
