I want to start with talking a little about resonances.

To resonate means to meet. To vibrate with something in some way. Jonathan's book is full of resonances. It is crafted of them. Resonances between disciplines; therapy, stand-up, writing. Resonances between characters in these worlds. Resonances between knowing, ethics, and the real. Resonances between affective states of personing– which isn't quite the same as being human. And resonances between the author and the reader; Jonathan's stories touch us with their humour, their caring for the process of inquiry, and their openness. He confesses things that I'm sure we can all relate to. Anyone who has stood on a stage will, for instance, – and spoiler alert – resonate when Jonathan dies.

Shetland's world-famous Viking-themed Up Helly Aa fire festival is a distinctive celebration of community and heritage. Recently media attention and local debate has begun to focus on an ongoing controversy surrounding the exclusion of women and girls from participating in certain roles in the town of Lerwick's Up Helly Aa event. This paper provides some insight into the developing situation and critically examines the claims of heritage and tradition in the face of accusations of locally sanctioned discrimination. With input from members of the grassroots organisation Up Helly Aa for Aa, who campaign for gender equality in the festival (and which the lead author is a member of), the opportunity is taken to provide the perspective of those challenging the status quo.

Shaping the Real and Imaginary Boundaries of East Jerusalem in the Context of the Israeli‑Palestinian Conflict The article discusses selected goals of Israeli policy regarding East Jerusalem, presenting them as phenomena constituting the process of constructing real and imaginary city boundaries. The author analyzed two following research problems. How did Israel create the actual and imaginary city boundaries? What were the consequences of Israeli boundaries‑forming policy? The above questions were analyzed by looking at Israeli facts on the ground policy aimed to unify Jerusalem territory and consolidate its de facto jurisdiction. The investigation of the above questions allowed to draw a conclusion that Israeli policies in East Jerusalem contributed to the maintaining of the Israeli‑Palestinian conflict.

The study is an analysis of the counter-democracy nature and phenomena, Author tries to show why it's so present in our reality and what new challenges it makes us face. He claims, the most important question is the one about the democracy falling and counter-democracy rising. Why the counter-democracy seems to replace traditional model? Why people seems to look for urgently a new form of organization, political activity and control? Are the mechanism of liberal democracy no longer valid, unable to face the challenges of our reality? Or maybe people no longer trust the formal ways? Does the counter-democracy sunrise mean the sunset of liberal democracy model known today or they may coexist?

Normative acts applicable in the Republic of Poland do not lack a multitude of formulations of terms such as: war, state of war or time of war. The lack of legally binding definitions and the inconsistency of the use of identical definitions lead to different, often contradictory interpretations of particular situations, which may have different legal consequences.
Only a precise and detailed definition of these concepts, preferably by incorporating them into national or international law, would dispel many doubts and close the way to sometimes contradictory interpretations, which is particularly important for security and defence concepts and issues. Therefore, in this paper the author will present definitions and regulations resulting from Polish legal acts, relating to war, war time and the state of war.

The paper, starting from the analysis of Northanger Abbey, suggests reflection on the attitude of Jane Austen to her predecessors, Ann Radcliffe, Fanny Burney and Maria Edgeworth etc., but also the other both fertile and popular authors of the end of 18th and the beginning of 19th century. Using the research of Dale Spender and Brian Corman, the author presents the novelist as a conscious heiress of a significant, though successfully marginalised in the Victorian period and overlooked even today, female literary tradition. Taken from Linda Hutcheon, the definition of parody allows to compare in the end Northanger Abbey to Strach w Zameczku of the first Polish novelist, who referred in a very similar way to her foreign predecessors, Anna Mostowska.

Both Russian authorities and Russian society have a sense of harm associated with the position of Russia in the world. They do not agree with the dominant role of the West. To a large extent it is associated with a sense of Russian pride. The consequence of this situation is the growing confrontation between the Russian Federation and the West. Currently, the theatre of confrontation is i.a. the conflict in the east of Ukraine and the war in Syria. The intensification of military tension is also observed, the confirmation of which is the violation of the airspace of NATO members. The author of this article undertook research effort associated with the determination of the fields of confrontation between Russia and the West.

Abstract
This article narrates the experiences of eight Japanese individuals who travelled to Melbourne, Australia, not to study English in a formal classroom, but to activate their language skills in a genuine social context. Speakers were willing to take risk in the social process to acquire fluency and develop confidence. Based on data generated from two years' observation of and interviews with the participants, the author documented the pleasure and the challenges that occur in their unique experience. The project reveals a range of preferences, strategies and tension in the languageusing environment. Educational implications are drawn from several key characteristics of this self-motivated experiential model that may be absent in the current academic discourse in English-language teaching practice.

The publication is devoted to the problems of towns and townspeople's activity in the political life of Poland before the Partitions. The research problem taken up in the article determined the possibly universal understanding of the term "town" and resignation from penetrating into terminological disputes related to the multifaceted nature of "urban issues" resulting in polemical multithreading in the doctrine. A broad temporal range was supposed to show the dynamics of undertaken actions, the progress and regress of the discussed process and the diversity of forms of active participation of towns and townspeople in the political life of the state. The author also tried to consider whether the explored issue could have an impact on the original direction of the systemic evolution of the former Polish statehood.

This paper explores the ways nationalism has been theorised in classical and contemporary sociology. More specifically, the author analyses the relevance of Randall Collins's contribution to theories of nationalism. Since Collins's work is firmly rooted in the classical tradition, including the reinterpretation and synthesis of Weber, Durkheim and Goffman, the first part of this paper zooms in on the classics of sociology and their treatment of nations and nationalism. The second part of the paper outlines the key features of Collins's approach and identifies the strengths and weaknesses of this position. The final part builds on the footsteps of Collins and others to articulate an alternative approach focused on the coercive organisational, ideological and micro-interactional grounding of nationalisms.

The global war on terror (GWOT) is undoubtedly the most recent case where a government authorized 'enhanced interrogation techniques', a euphemism for torture. In addition to shocking stories and photographs from Guantánamo, Abu Ghraib and CIA black site prisons, popular culture assists in the production of torture's public image and indicates a site of norm contestation. Therefore, the aim of this article is threefold. First, the author shows that Zero Dark Thirty (2012, dir. Kathryn Bigelow) is constitutive for the public image of torture and its meaning-in-use. Second, she argues that the film's representation of torture works as a popular site of contesting the anti-torture norm. Finally, she reflects on the continuum between popular culture and the politics of torture.

This article contributes to an overall understanding of the challenges faced by humanitarian aid international non-government organizations (INGOs) in specific culturally context-sensitive regions of Myanmar. This research is based on a review of literature, relevant case study analysis, and on ten semi-structured interviews with the humanitarian activists of the Myanmar Diaspora in Canada. The author investigates the following research question: To what extent does "cultural context" play a crucial role in managing humanitarian aid during disaster response operations in a given affected area, and how does it consequently link to the challenges of humanitarian aid INGOs in Myanmar? Based on the findings, a culturally appropriate framework will be introduced for the efficacy of humanitarian aid INGOs when implementing disaster response operations in Myanmar.

AbstractThis article studies the effects of traditional chiefs—a common type of broker—on voters' ability to extract state resources from politicians. Using original data from Northern Ghana, the author shows that chieftaincy positions invented by colonial authorities are especially prone to capture, leaving voters worse off compared both to more accountable chiefs whose authority dates to the precolonial period and to voters who lack formal chiefs who can serve as brokers. The latter comparison exploits exogenous assignment of ethnic groups to the colonial invention of chieftaincy in the late nineteenth century. The findings suggest that whether voters benefit from brokers amidst clientelistic electoral competition depends on the accountability relationship between brokers and their clients.

Before we even noticed, electronic devices and the internet have invaded our lives and our universities. Far from being just an instrument, they change the way we teach, whether we want it or not. Unfortunately, instead of helping, they carry negative effects, well documented by research in psychology, psychiatry and neuroimaging over the last decade. They affect our attention, our memory, and our social skills. Without even being aware of it, we are playing the Sorcerer's Apprentice. Since 2011, the author has banned the digital and reinvigorated traditional teaching methods: a demanding, yet hugely rewarding experience. The present paper is a vibrant plea by a scholar to fellow scholars: let us get rid of the virtual! Let us teach for real!

This paper does not aspire to offer an overall presentation of Prof. Jan Boć's contribution to the concept of interest, but is intended to point out several views of this author on the design of legal interest in administrative law, including an attempt to assess their validity.Some of these views now require revising, others give them a fresh look. Professor Jan Boć commented on the relationship between public law and private law, made successful attempts to define the relationship. In the area of Professor Jan Boc's academic interests, there has always been the individual, and therefore the Professor devoted considerable space in his work to the construction of legal interest of the individual, which went beyond the traditional definition describing the conceptof public interest.
