In the article, the author explores the socio-political and church-religious reasons for the schism at the diocesan-regional level within the then Kharkiv Diocese of the Ukrainian Exarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church in the 1920s. During that period, religious life was characterized by excessive politicization which was conditioned by the atheistic policies of the communist authorities. Communist leaders deliberately stimulated intra-church schisms within the Ukrainian Exarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church. The author focuses on the autocephalous, renovationist and Lubenska movements within the Kharkiv diocese. Numerous facts of the intra-church struggle for temples and believers are presented in the paper as well as the direct intervention of the Soviet authorities in the affairs of the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine is proved. The intervention was systemic and led to a permanent crisis in the Orthodox Church environment in Kharkiv region during the period under study.
