"In this revised edition of his 1979 classic Political Theory and International Relations, Charles Beitz rejects two highly influential conceptions of international theory as empirically inaccurate and theoretically misleading. In one, international relations is a Hobbesian state of nature in which moral judgments are entirely inappropriate, and in the other, states are analogous to persons in domestic society in having rights of autonomy that insulate them from external moral assessment and political interference. Beitz postulates that a theory of international politics should include a revised principle of state autonomy based on the justice of a state's domestic institutions, and a principle of international distributive justice to establish a fair division of resources and wealth among persons situated in diverse national societies."--

The Ecological Bases for Lake and Reservoir Management provides a state-of-the-art review of the range of ecologically-based techniques necessary for the holistic management of lakes and their catchments. Most of the methods, case studies and national policies reviewed are directed towards management of the largest problem - eutrophication - with the emphasis on the multiple-scale approach needed for successful management and restoration. Case studies come from the USA and ten European countries, and range from single lakes through to lake districts and national inventories. This volume contains the proceedings of an international workshop on the issue of `Fate of Pesticides in the Atmosphere - Implications for Risk Assessment' held in 1998 in The Netherlands. Topics include emission, dispersion, transport and transformations of pesticides in the atmosphere, and the ecotoxicological risks of pesticides in remote areas. Laboratory and field measurements are reviewed, and modeling of the atmospheric processes that affect pesticides are discussed. Various risk assessment approaches are presented, and possible statutory environmental criteria that could be incorporated into pesticide regulation in order to limit their atmospheric dispersion are explored. This is the first book to present a complete review of the science of this subject with the aim of investigating the possibilities of incorporating long-range transport potential of pesticides into protocols for estimating their environmental risks and their registration. This book will be important for atmospheric and pesticide scientists, pesticide manufacturers, pesticide regulators, and risk assessors

Die Transformationsforschung ist auch zehn Jahre nach der Zäsur der deutsch-deutschen Vereinigung noch weitgehend "geschlechtsblind". Die Vielschichtigkeit gegenwärtiger Wandlungsprozesse stellt gleichzeitig neue Anforderungen und Fragen an die aktuelle Geschlechterforschung: Wie gestaltet sich das Verhältnis von Persistenz oder Erosion geschlechtlich bestimmter Ungleichheiten (neu)? In welcher Weise wird "Geschlecht" als sozialer Platzanweiser und Zuteilungsdimension von Lebenschancen in Prozessen der Unternehmensreorganisation wirksam? Based on the analytical framework of the structure-conduct-performance paradigm of the theory of industrial organisation, the paper analyses those economic conditions that determine the degree of competitiveness in the Latvian dairy and milling industry. The analysis is based on information from milk and grain processing enterprises acquired through a survey carried out at the beginning of 1998. It is shown that the development of market conditions and market behaviour in the sectors examined has in general progressed. Privatisation in both sectors has been completed. While in the dairy sector the majority of processing enterprises were privatised as co-operatives, in the milling industry all enterprises have become closed joint-stock companies. Since the legal status of a co-operative has turned out to be quite problematic for enterprise restructuring, more and more dairy enterprises have started to change into joint-stock companies. Competition in the investigated processing sectors can be considered as functioning. However, in the dairy sector tendencies of stronger horizontal concentration can be observed. The majority of enterprises react in quite an active way to the market conditions. Procurement and marketing channels have been diversified, and considerable investments have been undertaken. Further investments, however, are impeded by high interest rates for credits. As for performance, quite a considerable differentiation between the enterprises in the considered branches could be shown. The main problems seen by the processors are the saturation of the domestic Latvian market, the lack of investment funds, the unstable legislation, the absence of any substantial support from the government, and, in the dairy sector, the low quality of the raw milk.

Seit 1989 ist es auf dem japanischen Fernsehmarkt im Zuge der Senkung der Markteintrittsbarrieren zum vermehrten Marteintritt von Kabel- und Satellitenfernsehanbietern gekommen. Gefördert durch die daraus resultierende Einführung eines Trennungsmodells der Fernsehanbieter, die Digitalisierung und die Konvergenz mit der Telekommunikationsbranche ist eine zunehmende Differenzierung von Anbietern und angebotenen Dienstleistungen festzustellen. Parallel dazu findet eine Konzentration von Anbietern verschiedener Kompetenzen und Funktionen statt. Insgesamt zeigen die Ausführungen, daß sich der Wettbewerb im japanischen Fernsehmarkt dadurch tendenziell in Richtung eines funktionsfähigen Wettbewerbs entwickelt. Ein höherer publizistischer Wettbewerb und damit eine höhere Meinungsvielfalt konnte jedoch durch den nur auf bestimmte Konsumenten begrenzten Zugang zu Pay-TV-Angeboten nur eingeschränkt festgestellt werden.
