; This work is a critical review of the book Ciudadanos reemplazados por algoritmos, written by Néstor García Canclini, in 2019. This article aims to highlight the value attributed to art, especially music, by Arthur Schopenhauer. The author's relationship with the philosophy of Fichte and Schelling will be articulated, contextualizing his thinking with the german romantic movement. Moreover, by presenting his aesthetic hierarchy, some fundamental aspects of the author of The world as will and representation will be pointed out, insofar as this duality is also pointed to when referring to the different artistic styles.
METHODS: Cross-sectional study carried out with a sample of 380 male military personnel aged 19 to 35 years of a Brazilian Air Force unit in the city of São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil, in 2000 and 2001. The cut-off points for hypertension were: >; 140mmHg for systolic pressure and >; 90mmHg for diastolic pressure. The studied variables included risk and protective factors for hypertension, such as behavioral and nutritional characteristics. For association analysis, generalized linear model multiple regression was used, with binomial family and logarithmic link, and prevalence ratios were obtained with 90% confidence interval and hierarchical selection of variables. RESULTS: Prevalence of hypertension was 22% (90% CI: 21;29). In the final multiple regression model, it was found that the prevalence of hypertension was 68% higher among ex-smokers when compared to non-smokers (90% CI: 1.13; 2.50). Among subjects with overweight (body mass index - BMI of 25 to 29kg/m2) and obesity (BMI>; 29kg/m2) the prevalences were, respectively, 75% (90% CI: 1.23;2.50) and 178% (90% CI: 1.82;4.25) higher than among subjects with normal weight. Among those that practiced physical activity regularly, compared to those who did not practice it, the prevalence was 52% lower (90% CI: 0.30;0.90). CONCLUSIONS: Being an ex-smoker and overweight or obese were risk situations for hypertension, while the regular practice of physical activity was a protective factor in young military personnel.
This article considers life stories and autobiographical narratives as research instruments. It explains the life story method and its possible uses in the field of public health. It includes comments and reflections based on the author's experiences as she did research on the life stories of women, families and individuals in vulnerable situations. The author argues that the life story method, as well as the narratives, enables both the narrator and the researcher to reconstruct their experiences and to the reinterpret the meaning of what happened.
This work is based on a research about the principal's perception about the management of municipal schools in Jacobina, Bahia, Brazil. The aim of this research was to analyze how principals perceive the pedagogical attributions that are required to develop the management of municipal schools in Jacobina. For this, we used as a data collection instrument a questionnaire whose application involved 22 principals who work in the city and rural schools. We adopted as a method a case study that uses, predominantly, ordinal variables, resulting from the application of Likert scale, and the result of the principals' perception was presented by degree of agreement/disagreement. The questionnaire contains proposals on the elaboration of the Political-Pedagogical Project (PPP), the School Development Plan (SDP), the participation of the principal in the pedagogical actions and the promotion of the participation of the different segments in the pedagogical actions. Based on the analysis of the data, we observed that most of the principals perceive that there are problems regarding the elaboration of the PPP and the SDP. They point out lack of time to participate in the pedagogical questions and, in relation to the participation of the several segments, indicate that there are difficulties in bringing the family to participate in the pedagogical actions, which does not happen in relation to teachers and pedagogical coordinators. We conclude that principals strive for pedagogical actions to occur in a participatory manner and realize the need to direct part of their work to follow the pedagogical attributions that are demanded of them when they take over the direction of the school.
In 'The Oxford Handbook of Wittgenstein', Michael Potter's essay 'Wittgenstein on mathematics' offers not only an analysis on why Wittgenstein's philosophy of mathematics is so controversial among philosophers and mathematicians but also justifies such controversy. For that purpose, Potter emphasizes that Wittgenstein's discussions on math are unfinished. This article sheds light on some inconsistencies and contradictions pertaining Wittgenstein's mathematic thoughts which, although reinforcing the decade-long criticism on the author, did not interest scholars as much as Wittgenstein's comments on Kurt Gödel's incompleteness theorems and his dialogues with Alan Turing on the foundations of mathematics.
The notion of 'epistemic community' is crucial for the characterization of observability, a cornerstone for Bas van Fraassen's constructive empiricism. As a matter of fact, 'observable' is, to him, a short for 'observable-by-us'. In this work, it will be shown that the alleged rigidity of the author of 'The Scientific Image', apparently not very keen to admitting changes in the epistemic community (constituted - according to him - by the human race), is actually an assumption of modesty and good judgment; it means recognizing that scientific enterprise is just a human activity, among many others.
This essay intersects literature and epistemology in order to understand what it means to take "The left hand of darkness" (1969), as proposed by the author Ursula K. Le Guin, as a thought experiment. As we look at Science Fiction as a literary genre and how it relates to the notion of thought experiment, we conclude that Science Fiction authors, through the imaginary displacement they perform as they create people, worlds, political organizations, and explore the relations between subjects within these imaginary structures, also draw thought experiments that are able to deal with important aspects of the human experience.
This paper aimed to study about bus driver's occupational stress. This issue - stress - has been extensively studied, being a facilitator in the development of numerous diseases and impairing the quality of life and productivity of individuals. Aims: This work also investigated the factors that affect the relationship between man/work and aimed to identify the stage of stress and symptoms. The health problems related to work, which are more common among drivers, in semi-urban passengers transportation service, were studied as well, in a company called "Viação Javaé", in Gurupi, state of Tocantins, Brazil. Methods: Lipp's Inventory of Stress Symptoms for Adults - ISSL - and demographic questionnaire were applied. Eight drivers were targets of this research and their responses were transcribed into charts and graphs. Results: Several causative factors of drivers' job stress were identified and grouped into three classifications: working conditions, vehicle conditions and interpersonal relations with passengers. The stress levels found were low, because the vast majority - 78% of the subjects - were not stressed at the time of application of the instrument. The presence of stress was found in only 22% of subjects, and these were in the resistance stage, with physical symptoms. Back problems were the most common among the drivers. Final Considerations: We conclude this paper by saying that it is almost impossible to avoid stress in our lives, but change the adverse conditions at work, as well as lifestyle, are ways to face it more appropriately and intelligently.
In this article we seek to analyze the senses of the anthem composed for the city of Feira de Santana, Bahia, in 1928, by poet and conductor Georgina Erisman. It is an exercise in interpreting the symbols and meanings of the work (the anthem) and how the author sought to represent this city based on a set of elements that defined local identity in the early twentieth century. Such elements went through their commercial vocation, their religiosity, their femininity and even their climate, among others. A set of images whose meaning has been almost completely lost to later generations, even though the anthem is still one of the city's official symbols
Montaigne and Diderot were philosophers, humanists, and defenders of critical skepticism. His writings are characterized by a fluid, private, and comic writing style. In Diderot we see a philosopher playwright, author and critical theatrical. In Montaigne a non-academic philosopher, a magistrate averse to the perfectionism of scholastic philosophy, which instituted a new style of writing. There is a common trait in how they both understand philosophy. For Montaigne and Diderot, ethics and aesthetics are two domains of philosophy that have a close relationship. The work of art is an essential element that has the power to awaken the human spirit and lead it to the experience of true virtue.
This paper aims to present the ethical thinking of Simone de Beauvoir as it is exposed in her book 'Pour une morale de l'ambiguité'. In this book, the author retakes her understanding of the human existence given in her previous text, 'Pyrrhus et Cinéas', unfolding better her analysis and presenting an ambiguous ethical principle as universal and singular at the same time from which an ethics consistent with human existence would be outlined. Thus, we will seek to characterize properly how Simone de Beauvoir understands this ethics of ambiguity, fundamentally from the comprehension of the affirmation that "to will oneself moral and to will oneself free are one and the same decision".
This article analyzes the role played by the State Council of D. Pedro II in combating the international slave trade. Until the mid-1850s, the slave trade was presented as a problem of difficult resolution for Brazilian elites due to a number of factors: as constant threats from the English government, the importance of slave labor in the country's economic structure and in political lobby of slaves owners. England was asserting its economic and military status as a global power to impose on Brazil an end to the interatlantic slave trade. Due to the international pressures suffered by Brazil, the continuity of trafficking has become a matter of concern for national elites. The theme provoked a wide debate in the sessions of the Full Council. The English interventionist stance was severely criticized by the councilors for violating national sovereignty. From the Eusébio de Queiróz law, the Council of State acquired a new configuration not provided for the Constitution: to judge and punish, in the second instance, those involved in the slave trade. In order to guarantee effective punishment for traffickers and to appease the international pressure suffered by Brazil, the State Council tried to attract the processes related to trafficking to its jurisdiction. Punishing those involved in this type of trade was not an easy task due to the complicity and collusion of local authorities. The present text is part of doctoral research developed by the author when turning to the theme of slavery. At the theoretical level, the author seeks to realize an interface between the field of History and Social Sciences, particularly Political Science. This work uses a wide bibliographic collection, in addition to a series of primary sources, in particular, the Minutes of the Council of State.
; THIS ESSAY summarizes the author's itinerary as historian of Brazilian literature, theoretician of poetry and scholar of our cultural heritage. The initial moments of this career merit special attention: the study of Croce's aesthetics, the first acquaintance with Gramsci's Marxist philosophy, the influence of Christian Existentialism in the late 1950s, and the political engagement in leftist politics in Brazil in the 1960s and 70s. As professor of Italian Literature, the author has written theses on Pirandello and Leopardi, which remain unpublished. As a student of literary history, in the wake Otto Maria Carpeaux's work, the author examines the dialectic relationships between ideology and poetry, and ideology and prose, which led to his concept of literature as resistance. When writing the Dialectics of Colonization, he immersed himself in the study of the tensions that distinguish the history of ideologies in Brazil.
Water governance is a major challenge in the Mediterranean context. Any action to drive water governance towards sustainability needs to be grounded in a holistic understanding of such challenges. Therefore, a first step towards the improvement of water governance is a grounded understanding of what is at stake, who are the actors involved, and how they interact. To achieve this level of understanding, we propose the use of the social–ecological Systems (SES) framework. This framework was developed to grasp the complexity of issues related to the sustainable use of public goods such as water. This study looks at water governance in the farming sector of three municipalities in the Alentejo and Algarve, in the south of Portugal. Data were collected using a literature review and 22 semi-structured interviews with territorial actors (i.e., public administration, non-governmental associations, private sector, decision-makers, and farmers). By using the SES framework, we provide an integrated characterization of water governance in the case study and identify the implicated factors. Between these factors, and focusing on the overlap between literature and actors' perspectives, are (1) the lack of integrated and supported strategies for development, and (2) lack of communication between the actors that need to congregate efforts towards sustainable use of water resources. The study found few examples of collective efforts and long-lasting networks of collaboration, especially between science and practice. We conclude by arguing that place-based tailored policies are needed. Such policies should promote communication and collective actions between researchers, local organizations, public administration, and farmers.
