This book challenges conventional wisdom about bullfighting. With an innovative approach, based on the work of Norbert Elias, the author argues bullfight is the result of the interaction between transformations of society and decisions that aim to create bullfighting rules. In the course of history, bullfighting became civilized, that is, pacified, in the sense that the level of self-control in the conduct and emotions of both bullfighters and public increased. This does not mean that violence has disappeared, but that it has acquired new traits. This historical path, from the 15th century to the present, is reconstructed in these pages by analyzing bullfighting in Portugal through the viewpoint of the regulation of violence, its public exposure and its relationship with the population's patterns of behavior and sensitivity.
Analyses the lives and livelihoods of the female cashew shellers in Mozambique's capital in the colonial era, during which the industry grew to be a major export, and relates how the women played a fundamental, but previously underappreciated, role in the colony's economy. JOINT RUNNER-UP FOR THE 2017 AIDOO-SNYDER BOOK PRIZE Between the late 1940s and independence in 1975, rural Mozambican women migrated to the capital, Lourenço Marques, to find employment in the cashew shelling industry. This book tells the labour and social history of what became Mozambique's most important late colonial era industry through the oral history and songs of three generations of the workforce. In the 1950s Jiva Jamal Tharani recruited a largely female labour force and inaugurated industrial cashew shelling in the Chamanculo neighbourhood. Seasonal cashew brews had long been an essential component of the region's household, gift and informal economies, but bythe 1970s cashew exports comprised the largest share of the colony's foreign exchange earnings. This book demonstrates that Mozambique's cashew economy depended fundamentally on women's work and should be understood as "whole cloth". Drawing on over 100 interviews, the rich narratives convey layered histories: the rural crises that triggered the flight of women, their lives as factory workers, widespread payment and wage fraud, the formation of innovative urban families, and the health costs that all African families paid for municipal neglect of their neighbourhoods. The author intends to account here for the multiplicity of forms and sites of contemporary theatrical creation through the notion of "théâtre traversé / traversed theater," based especially on three examples chosen for their diversity: BR-3, a site-specific work of the Teatro Vertigo; theatrical video performances of the Berlin Group, in particular Land's end; the literary, visual and technological creations of director Guy Cassiers. The understanding is that these pieces do not seek so much to produce representations with spectators but rather perspectives, referring to Viveiros de Castro's anthropological notion: Perceptual slips, conceptual disconnections, social disaffiliations, activating, for each spectator in his or her own way, the politics of "ignorant master" (Jacques Rancière), and thus promoting new modes of subjectivity.English version by Leslie Damasceno.
In every country, behind the official law composed of the Constitution, statutes, rules edited by the Executive branch, and legal precedents, there is also another concealed regulation, based on the structure of ruling powers within society and legitimized by social mentality. Such duplicity of legal systems has always existed in Brazil. Apart from the official law, which follows valid civilization standards of countries that we consider to be culturally more advanced, there is a tacit law in force, whose role is to protect the interests of dominant social groups. This article illustrates this twofold reality of Brazilian law with the historical cases of slavery and democracy. In order to change this social structure, whose appearance does not reflect effective reality, the author highlights the need for a wide and continual denunciation of its illegitimacy.
; The work exposed hereafter intends to examine the ambiguous character of identities according to the analyses of the French philosopher Étienne Balibar. The text will focus on his works from the late eighties, where there is a distancing from the circle formed around Althusser and an approach to the philosophies of difference of Foucault, Deleuze and Derrida. We will seek to explain how the author, through the prism of Marxist class conflicts, will denounce the echelonment process of individuals in a hierarchical fashion within the capitalist world-economy based on multiple identity processes which respect the logic of maintaining the existing international social structure. The background of such analyses is the rise of xenophobic and neo-fascists movements which have not ceased to increase in today's Europe as a reaction to a profound crisis of the nation-state, its institutions and the fragmentation of ideally established communities.
This article examines the features of folk teachers' everyday life in the Russian Empire during the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries. The study is based on such concepts as everyday life, lifestyle, standard of living, and working conditions. As the part of the study of folk teachers' everyday life, the author focused on the consideration of the material, legal status, living and working conditions, and professional opportunities provided to teachers. Besides, the reasons for the frequent layoffs of national teachers were studied. Based on a deep analysis of historical sources and literature, the author comes to the conclusion that by the end of the XIX - the beginning of the XX centuries most of the teaching positions in public schools began to be occupied by female teachers, and attempts were made to raise their material and legal status at the legislative level. Despite such attempts, folk teachers in the Russian Empire had a low professional status in contrast to their male colleagues during the second half of the XIX - early XX centuries. This was due to the fact that during this period woman were not full members of society yet and the processes of women's emancipation in Russia proceeded much more slowly than in other countries. Post-colonial Portuguese literature published since 1974 has obscured the trauma of the colonised. In the context of Portuguese prose fiction published since the beginning of the second decade of the present millennium, authors of African descent follow on from the generation that brought about the African liberations. However, due to the years of political and economic instability that followed in the former colonies, these writers became part of the African-heritage diaspora that has grown up in Portugal. As such, they form the visible face of the post-colonial cultural entanglement that was produced by colonialism. Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida, the author of As Telefones (The Telephones, 2020), the novel that is the focus of this article, provides an example of African-heritage writing and lived experience that has points of reference in Portuguese and Angolan cultures alike. This article argues that Portuguese prose fiction by authors of African descent destabilises cartographical imaginaries to reflect on the cultural complexity of the lived experience of people of African descent, contributing to a polyphony that has been absent from collective memory in the public space, and consequently creating possibilities for historical reparation. This article maintains that, on the one hand, As Telefones decolonises the experience of loss that literature published after 1974 has associated not only with the memory and experience of the coloniser's body, but also and significantly, with the feeling of saudade (nostalgia or longing) that is so central to Portuguese culture; on the other, it argues that the narrative focus on the telephone as the sole means of transmission of post-memory introduces a rupture in Portuguese literary convention — in which writing is a privileged witness — by endorsing the orality that feeds into the origins of African literatures. For some time, we have seen various authors question the frontier that traditionally separated the literary texts from the conceptual texts. One of the most relevant authors in this regard is Roland Barthes. However, one of his most famous articles seems to contradict that idea. In Authors and Writers, Barthes seems to adopt this distinction to describe the production of texts. Authors are those who work the language itself, while writers are those who try to develop their thoughts without thinking about the language they are using. If that is true, language would be, for the writers, a mere tool for conveying ideas. In this article, we propose an alternative interpretation of those notions, more focused on the social roles of authors and writers. By doing that, we can better understand the figure of the author-writer, characterized by social exclusion. This analysis shows that the theme of writing is always accompanied by a reflection on its political nature.
This article presents new ethnographic and visual material on the dance of the makixi, the ancestors manifested in the form of masked dancers, originally found in the circumcision rituals (mukanda) practiced by Bantu peoples from the large area of confluence between Angola, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, including the Luvale. Proclaimed Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2005, the main locus of their performance today is the large Luvale 'culture' festival, held since the 1950s in Zambia and more recently in Angola. Based on an ethnography of the Angolan version of the festival, researched between 2013 and 2013, the author focuses on the makixi dances, which comprise the event's main attraction, showing the close relationship between the morphology of the masks and the dance styles, helping to narrow the enormous gap opened up by the lapse of almost forty years without any research being carried out in the area due to warfare.
; The conflicting relationship between an alleged "dancing nature" of Brazilian people and the only remote participation dance takes on stage in Brazil's cultural scene is the initial provocation that led Marianna Monteiro to carry out her research, timely called Dança popular: espetáculo e devoção (Popular dance: spectacle and devotion). As suggested in the subtitle, research deals with seemingly opposite vectors - coming from the old dialectic of the sacred and the profane - however, marked by unsuspected relations, where politics, economics, aesthetics and religion intersect in the formative process of Brazilian popular dances, considered by the author as an integral part of the expansion of the Portuguese Modern State, between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. The research is the result of the doctoral thesis presented to the Department of Philosophy of the Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Literature and Human Sciences of the University of São Paulo (FFLCH-USP), under the guidance of Professor Olgária Feres Matos.

In Brazil, as in many other countries, the presence of the private sector in education has been increasing exponentially, as pointed out by many studies. Such a movement for the advancement of the private sector in education can be understood in the movement of crisis and capitalist expansion. This article is a theoretical essay based on research carried out by the author in more than 15 years of studies on the theme of privatization of education. It aims to reflect on the incidence of the private sector in the "curriculum construction process" and to highlight that this movement has led to the appropriation of the public purposes of education by business reformers. It points to the potential of democratic management as a possibility against hegemony in the perspective of defining public and collective purposes for education. Since the end of the 1970s, capitalism experienced a regressive phase – neoliberal rentier-financier capitalism – and, since 2008, has entered a terminal crisis. Capitalists ceased to control the process of capital accumulation and innovation that legitimized them, and capitalism stop to produce economic development and human progress. In its place, a new social organization is emerging that the author calls "democratic managerialism", in which the class of managers or technobureaucrats once again became stronger and constituted the nucleus of the new dominant class coalition. At thesame time, democracy has been facing the authoritarian challenges well and it is possible to predict that it will deepen in democratic managerialism.
