Chinese president Xi Jinping is most famously associated with his "Chinese Dream" campaign. Xi environs the dream to be one about the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Many observers, though, view China's pursuit of this dream as alarming. They see a global power ready to abandon its low-profile diplomacy and eager to throw its weight around. This book represents an inter-disciplinary effort of deciphering the Chinese Dream and its global impact. Jing Sun employs concepts from political science and journalism and those from literature, sociology, psychology and drama studies, to offer a multi-level analysis of various actors' roles in Chinese foreign policymaking: the leaders, the bureaucrats, and its increasingly diversified public. The title - Red Chamber has two layers of meanings: first, it refers to an earlier Chinese dream that nearly all the Chinese are familiar with - an 18th century literature classic Dream of the Red Chamber that describes the rise and fall of seemingly invincible powerhouses; second, it refers to the ornate, red-painted headquarters of the Chinese Communist Party in downtown Beijing, where its leaders now are dreaming global - hence the second part of the title World Dream. Struggles over resources are not new for indigenous peoples. One of the latest arenas for recognition of their rights regards their intangibles, such as the protection of their traditional cultural expressions (TCEs). Most attention for protection from unauthorised use has occurred in the sphere of intellectual property law, notably copyright law. However, both protection arguments and context indicate wider implications of the issue, which include preservation of cultural heritage and exercise and enjoyment of human rights such as the rights to self-determination and participation in cultural life. This book breaks new ground by pursuing a transdisciplinary approach in support of the argument that the protection of TCEs cannot be viewed as an isolated issue of intellectual property. In addition to copyright law, the extensive analysis also includes the legal frameworks of cultural heritage and human rights law in order to uncover shared central values to guide efforts and approaches to TCE protection in going forward. Operationalisation of the shared central values can guide the process of moving towards a more comprehensive perspective of the protection of TCEs. Hence, the main aim of the book is to demonstrate the strength of looking across the boundaries of legal domains and mandates and to argue the necessity of pursuing a diverse legal and policy response. With its novel approach and thorough analysis, covering three legal frameworks not usually connected in such an integrated way, the book offers a significant contribution to the field of protection of traditional knowledge and cultural expressions. "Offering a critical account of the ways in which the US deployed its war power under liberal auspices throughout the Cold War, this book casts a geopolitical lens onto cultural productions preoccupied with black freedom, Asian liberation, and Pacific Islander decolonization against the backdrop of U.S. militarism in the Asia-Pacific region. The book examines the centrality of this militarism to the political and cultural imagination of racialized subjects in an era of serial U.S. "police actions" abroad and what writers such as James Baldwin, Ralph Ellison, and W.E.B. Du Bois described as a police state at home, contending that U.S. informal warfare relied on racial counterintelligence campaigns that structured not only America's hot wars in Asia but also its approach to radical activism, racial protest, and urban riots on the domestic front. As the author demonstrates, even as U.S. war politics may have taken the guise of anti-racist, multicultural alliance-building and marshaled the rhetoric of mutual defense, they gave rise to dissident visions of human rights that converged in a critique of the unilateralism of U.S. militarism, one that did not point in the direction of today's interventionist human rights politics. "This book considers the manner in which the enactment and implementation of law and governance is changing in the global context. It explores this through a study of the deployment of the global anti-doping apparatus including the World Anti-Doping Code and its institutions with specific reference to professional cycling, a sport that has been at the forefront of some of the most famous doping cases and controversies in recent years. Critically, it argues that the changes to law and governance are not restricted to sport and anti-doping, but are actually inherent in broader processes associated with neoliberalism and social and behavioural surveillance and affect all aspects of society and its political institutions. The author engages with concepts and arguments in contemporary social theory, including: Dardot and Laval on neoliberalism; Agamben on sovereignty; Hardt and Negri on globalisation; and others including Foucault, Deleuze and Guattari and Louis Dumont. The work seeks to answer a question posed by both Foucault and Agamben; that is, given the growing primacy of the arts of government, what is the juridical form and theory of sovereignty that is able to sustain and found this primacy? It is argued that this question can be understood by reference to the shift from a social or public contract that was understood to be the foundation of society, to a society that is constituted by consent, private agreement and contract. In addition, the book examines the juridical concepts of the rule of law and sovereignty. In the last decade advances in statistics, computing power, and data collection has led to an increased interest in forecasting within the field of peace and conflict research and to the adoption of a wide range of methodological approaches for making such forecasts. By making use of these more powerful forecasting methods researchers have been able to produce accurate predictions, as well as better inferences, of many different types of contentious politics events and to create operational early warning systems for such events. Adapting these forecasting methods to the social world in which politics and political behavior operate, however, is not without its challenges. This dissertation explores a number of methodological issues and advances in peace and conflict research, both inferential and forecasting oriented, through a series of four papers. In the first paper, I explore trends in democratization and autocratization using dynamic simulation. In Paper II, my co-author and I take aim at the difficulty of modeling and making forecasts with data which contains both excess zeroes and extreme-values. We propose an extreme-value and zero-inflated regression model which we use to replicate a study on the effects of UN peacekeepers on violence against civilians. Paper III explores latent variable modeling by using Markov models to make forecasts for escalation and de-escalation of armed conflicts. In the last paper, I investigate the effects of missing data and imputation techniques on the predictive performance of models. The four papers of the dissertation make several contributions to the growing literature of forecasting within peace and conflict research. First, the dissertation contributes to the methodological aspects of conflict forecasting by developing new statistical tools, Paper II, and adapting tools from other fields to different processes of armed conflict and contentious politics, Papers I & III, as well as by evaluating the practical effects of common choices in data pre-processing on the performance of forecasts in Paper IV. Second, the dissertation contributes to new ways of drawing inferences about conflict processes by anchoring the inferences in the latent state of the conflict processes in Papers II & III, and through the comparison of aggregated simulations to the historical record in Paper I. Lastly, the dissertation makes a substantive contribution to the broader field of peace and conflict research in Papers I & II by contributing to the debate on the waves of democratization and autocratization, and by nuancing the impact of UN Peacekeepers on violence against civilians.

Humanity's first teachings on ethics are to be found in ancient African proverbs. These subsequently served also as a critique of colonialism and neocolonialism. Long suppressed indigenous America sources supply a philosophical and political critique of Euro-centric economic and cultural values. They also offer an understanding of humanity's place in nature, the leadership of women, and attest to modes of cooperative and egalitarian forms of community. Feminist anthropology furnishes an historical context for understanding he origins of patriarchy and how to move beyond dominator power to new forms of partnership power. I also find core commonalities in the world's major wisdom traditions including Daoism, Confucianism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Intercultural ethical insights contribute not primarily to a politics of difference, but rather to a universally humanist politics of solidarity and hope. EarthCommonWealth envisions the displacement and transcendence of capitalist oligarchy as such, not simply its most bestial and destructive components. This is a green economic alternative because its ecological vision sees all living things and their non-living earthly surroundings as a global community capable of a dignified, deliberate coexistence. The ecological work of Aldo Leopold also comes into play here. Understanding the earth in global ecological terms Leopold saw it is not merely soil and rock; it is a biotic pyramid, a fountain of energy flowing through a circuit of land, minerals, air, water, plants, and animals including the human species. He proposed a dialectical and materialist "land ethic" as a call to conservation and cooperation, in which the individual's rights to private property in land are contrasted unfavorably with historical patterns of communal ownership.
