Between 1990 and 2015, the annual global amount of CO2 emission generated by transport has increased by 68%, from around 4.6 GtCO 2 to around 7.7 GtCO2 Technological advances towards eco friendly vehicles and policy incentives promoting environmental friendly modes of transport have thus been offset by economic growth and increa sing mobility. This study questions the relationship between economic growth
and sustainability performance of transport sector. It adds to the literature new insights concerning recent trends in the relationship between gross domestic product and various aspects of transport sustainability such as carbon footprint, carbon intensity and
transport safety. A particular attention is given to discussing the emerging issues of "carbon inequality" and the role of political entities that contribute most to global CO2 emissions, such China, USA and the EU. Finally, this study adds to the literature a
composite index of transport sustainability performance and explores between country inequalities in terms of sustainability performance.

The author considers Jurgen Habermas's conceptualization of & concern about the "pressure of the street." In the realm of the street, force or violence often overwhelm reason. In Habermas's theory, both civil society & the state hover precariously above an abyss symbolized by the street. 22 References. A. Funderburg

Summarizes the "Summit of the Americas," held 20-22 Apr 2001 in Quebec City, along with concurrent protests against the meeting in the form of a nearby "People's Summit" & other protest activities, including sit-ins, demonstrations, & other "carnivalesque" events. Efforts at the main summit to redefine the terms of global order in the post-Bretton Woods world economy are reviewed, focusing on the goal of creating "transnational subjects" through new forms of transnational governance as the political adjunct to economic changes in the form of global neoliberalism. Oppositional politics that arose in protest to the goals of the summit are described, highlighting their global spread, particularly in the form of "transnational communities of resistance." General discussion is offered on the political construction of transnational subjects & the politics of opposition against the "hemispheric growth machine" represented by such summits. K. This study conducts a comparative analysis of Twitter communication networks relating to the Syrian and Ukrainian refugee crises. Employing a network analysis approach, the study uses approximately 660,000 tweets to gain insights into the online discussion communities surrounding these crises. Tweets specifically discussing Syrian refugees were collected between 2015 and 2023, while those about Ukrainians were harvested from 2022 to 2023, utilizing the full-archive search endpoint of the Twitter API. By transforming retweets into communication networks between users, the study investigates the community structure within these networks. The findings reveal that the online anti-refugee community is smaller in size, more active, highly interconnected, and transcends national boundaries, in contrast to the opposing communities. These results underscore the need for increased social media engagement of pro-refugee voices and improved moderation practices to foster a more inclusive virtual public sphere.

During the apartheid era, the South African state committed systematic violence against the institution of the family among Africans. Consequently, many South Africans have experienced a dramatic gap between the ideals & the reality of family life. The author discusses individual experiences of South African family life in the context of political upheaval, state oppression, & economic manipulation. She focuses on the experiences of youthful political activists who participated in the revolt against the apartheid regime. She finds that apartheid seriously disrupted their family ties & undermined their security during the first 20 years of their lives. 1 Table, 27 References. A. Funderburg

"Numerous studies observed a negative correlation between education and authoritarianism. Most studies are based on single cross-sectional analysis. This chapter applies a longitudinal perspective based on Dutch survey data from 1970 to 1996. How stable are educational differences? What is the relative explanatory power of education in understanding trends in authoritarianism? How is the rapidly raising level of educational attainment in recent decades related to shifts in authoritarian attitudes? And how are changes in these attitudes connected to generational re-placement? We further explore why education works. How important are enhancing cognitive sophistication and strengthening ego-security to explain the reduction of authoritarianism? Findings show a clear, almost linear relationship between education and authoritarianism during more than a quarter of a century. Higher education is consistently correlated with lower authoritarianism. How-ever, the decline of authoritarianism from 1970 to 1996 was stronger than could be expected because of rising educational levels of the Dutch population. Including measures of cognitive sophistication and ego security only slightly improves our understanding of trends in authoritarian attitudes. Education seems a 'universal solvent,' but we need to know more about the content of educational differences (beyond formal levels of schooling) to settle the debate more definitely. This study is part of our research program 'civil society, globalization, and sustainable development' at GLOBUS, Institute for Globalization and Sustainable Development, Tilburg, The Netherlands: Tilburg University."
