The number of fiscal sources dating before 1400 that have survived in Castile is scarce, but some extant documents from the reign of Sancho IV attest to the importance of the rent payments made by the Royal Treasury to the nobles already at the end of the thirteenth century. They were the main beneficiaries of the royal taxation, as the chronicles also report. We do not know, however, how the system worked, how it was managed, nor who was in charge. In this article, we will study the information provided by normative texts: the Alfonsine legal codes (Fuero Real, Espéculo, and Siete Partidas), law compilations (Fuero Viejo and other texts) and Cortes records. In this paper we will study the patrimonial increase of the merinos mayores of Castile during the kingdom of Ferdinand III, using Fernán González de Rojas as a case in point. We aim to show the twofold bonds in the political relation between the king and his officials, and how that bidirectional relationship resulted in a considerable increase in the patrimonial wealth of the king's merinos. The king took support from the local and regional powers to enforce his authority over the territories, but this allowed them, in turn, to reinforce their own power over those same local and regional areas. The bulk of our analysis will focus on the study of the lands and manors of Fernán González de Rojas in the mid-thirteenth century, and those of his direct descendants until the early fourteenth century. ; A lo largo de este artículo intentaremos estudiar la proyección patrimonial de los merinos mayores de Castilla de Fernando III centrándonos en un caso, el de Fernán González de Rojas. Intentaremos mostrar la bidireccionalidad de la relación política entre el rey y sus merinos y cómo esa relación bidireccional se sustanciaba en un considerable desarrollo patrimonial para los merinos. El rey utilizaba a los poderes regionales y comarcales para hacer efectivo su poder territorial, pero eso les permitía a ellos también, a su vez, aumentar su poder en esos mismos ámbitos comarcales y regionales. De esa manera, el grueso de nuestro análisis se centrará en el estudio de los dominios de Fernán González de Rojas hacia mediados del siglo XIII y también de sus descendientes directos hasta comienzos del siglo XIV.

ESPAÑOL: Durante la primera mitad del siglo XIII García Fernández de Villamayor ocupó importantes oficios en la corte castellana, fue mayordomo de las reinas Leonor y Berenguela y del rey Fernando III. Su posición política le permitió llevar a cabo un proceso de expansión patrimonial muy notable. El análisis detallado de ese proceso constituye el objetivo de este artículo. Merece la pena destacar que García Fernández adquirió muchas heredades mediante compras realizadas a parientes u otros individuos que mantenían con él algún tipo de relación vasallática o clientelar. Su dominio se extendía por zonas muy amplias, desde Galicia hasta Andalucía, pero se concentraba especialmente en Castilla al norte del Duero, donde disponía, sobre todo, de derechos en villas de behetría. / ENGLISH: García Fernández de Villamayor hold high posts in the Castilian royal court during the first half of the thirteenth century: he was "mayordomo" (mayor of the court) of the Queens Leonor and Berenguela, and also of the King Fernando III. His political position allows him to expand his lands and properties. This article tries to analyse in deep that process of expansion. It is worth pointing out that García Fernández bought lands and rights to kinsmen and also to other individuals who were his vassals or clients. His lands spread through wide areas, from Galicia to Andalucía, but concentrate especially in Castile north to the river Duero, where he had, above all, rights over behetría villages.
