Özdemir, Bülent (Balikesir Author) ; In the 20(th) century Assyrians living in Diaspora have increased their search of identity because of the social and political conditions of their present countries. In doing so, they utilize the history by picking up certain events which are still kept fresh in the collective memory of the Assyrian society. World War I, which caused a large segment of the Assyrians to emigrate from the Middle East, has been considered as the milestone event of their history. They preferred to use and evaluate the circumstances during WW I in terms of a genocidal attack of the Ottomans against their nation. This political definition dwarfs the promises which were not kept given by their Western allies during the war for an independent Assyrian state. The aspects of Assyrian civilization existed thousands of years ago as one of the real pillars of their identity suffer from the artificially developed political unification around the aspects of their doom in WWI presented as a genocidal case. Additionally, this plays an efficient role in removal of existing religious and sectarian differences for centuries among Assyrians. This paper aims at showing in the framework of primary sources how Assyrian genocidal claims are being used pragmatically in the formation of national consciousness in a very effective way. Not the Assyrian civilization but their constructed history in WWI is used for the formation of their nation definition. ; Yaşadıkları ülkelerin sosyal ve politik durumları 20. yüzyılda diasporada yaşayan Süryanilerin kimlik arayışlarını etkilemiş ve hızını artırmıştır. Bunu yaparken sıkça başvurulan durumlardan biri de hiç şüphesiz tarihi kullanmaktır. Özellikle geçmişte yaşanmış ve hala toplumun kolektif hafızasında taze olan belli başlı olaylar seçilir. Farklı toplumsal ve dini gruplardan çok sayıda insanın yaşadıkları topraklardan göç etmelerine neden olan Birinci Dünya Savaşı, Süryani toplumu için bu duruma güzel bir örnek teşkil eder. Savaşta yaşananları Osmanlı Devletinin Süryani toplumuna yönelik bir soykırım girişimi olarak değerlendirilmesi ve kullanılması söz konusudur. Bu politik değerlendirme, Birinci Dünya Savaşı sırasında Batılıların bazı Süryani gruplara söz verdikleri ve daha sonradan bu sözü tutmadıkları "Bağımsızlık" durumunu karmaşık hale getirmektedir. Binlerce yıllık büyük bir medeniyetin varisleri olan bir toplumun Birinci Dünya Savaşı yıllarında yaşanan bazı olayları bugün toplumsal kimlik tanımlamasının merkezine oturtmaları bazı sorunları da beraberinde getirmektedir. Özellikle de bu durumun Süryani toplumu içinde yüzlerce yıldır süren bazı dini ve mezhepsel ayrı lıkların ortadan kaldırılması için kullanılması sorunu daha da karmaşık hale getirmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, arşiv belgelerinden de faydalanarak nasıl ve hangi şekillerde bazı Süryani grupların soykırım iddialarını ulusal bilinçlenme ve kimlik oluşumunda etkin bir araç olarak kullandıklarını göstermeye çalışmaktır.

The purpose of this study is to shed light on a period of time in Ottoman history when conversion policies and practices, influenced by the changes of times and, resulted in unprecedented socio-political directions. in order to do that, some conversion cases from the Ottoman society in Salanica will be presented. Conversion to Islam is of central importance in explaining the rise of empire and its formation in many scholary studies. It was usually presented as an official policy of Ottoman administration throughout the centuries. The devshirme system and Sufi preaching were considered to be the major instruments of mass conversion to Islam. On the contrary, I propose to look at the conversion issue in the nineteenth century context from a different angle.
