"Since 2011, Turkey's 'zero problems with neighbours' foreign policy has been put to the test in Syria. While Ankara was hesitant at first, it began to draw red lines and actively endorse regime change in Damascus. Subsequently, the boundaries established by then Prime Minister Erdogan and then foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu were not enforced. Therefore, with the situation in Syria deteriorating, the choices for Ankara became more limited." (author's abstract)

"After decades of conflict, Syrian-Turkish relations transformed into a close cooperation that has deepened throughout the 2000s. The reasons behind this can be found in a culmination of domestic, regional and international factors. Changes of leadership in both countries have contributed to the relationship, as well as common security threats after the Iraq War. Recent economic policy shifts have led to a talk of integration - a free trade agreement is already in effect, visa requirements have been lifted, the High-Level Strategic Council is at work, and through the Levant project, free movement of people and goods is on the table. Portrayed as "a model for Turkey's relations with other Middle Eastern countries", this paper looks at Syrian-Turkish relations, the reasons for and extent of the relationship and possible drawbacks for the future." This paper aims to analyze the challenges of population growth and resource scarcity in the Arab countries of the Levant. As the region has suffered from ongoing conflicts, civil wars, and political crises, the challenges of population growth and resource scarcity, coupled with environmental challenges has often been overlooked. This paper focuses on the problems associated with a growing population, such as an increased likelihood of unemployment and the emergence of a middle class poor in the region. Coupled with crony capitalism and patronage networks, it argues that the problems of youth are immediate and the necessity of inclusive policies is pressing. The paper follows by with a section that addresses environmental challenges and climate change. The linkage between environmental degradation and security is analyzed. The paper problematizes the Arab state, its regime survival strategies and its resistance to change as the main impediments for sustainability, growth and inclusiveness in the Levant.

In 1997 Turkey and Syria were on the brink of war, engaged in a very real power struggle. Turkey was aligned with Syria's main enemy, Israel, and there were seemingly intractable differences on the issues of borders, the sharing of river waters and trans-border communities. In less than a decade, relations were transformed from enmity to amity. What explains this remarkable change? Given that Turkey and Syria are two pivotal states in the region, what are the implications of this changing relationship for the international politics of the Middle East, the balance of power and regional stabilit.
