Tim Crouch's I, Caliban is a postdramatic adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest included in a collection titled I, Shakespeare in which he recreates Shakespeare's most marginalised characters. The focus in this sequel adaptation is on Caliban who tries to survive after Prospero and all others have left the island. Different from the representation of Caliban in postcolonial reworkings of Shakespeare's play, Caliban, in this work, is not preoccupied with taking revenge. Instead, he emphasises the need for social interaction as he has been left alone on his island. Drawing on former structural comparisons of The Tempest and Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe based on their common themes such as the island setting, master-servant relationship, colonial expansion, and power politics, the aim of this paper is to discuss Crouch's adaptation as a transformation of common motifs of the Robinsonade in its attempt to respond to the ideologicalformations of Shakespeare's text. Among such transformations, the concept of survival, for instance, is handled from the native's viewpoint in Crouch's work. Instead of the figure of the stranger who finds life on an unknown land difficult to cope with, this time, the native turns into a captive on the island though it is a familiar setting. Another motif used in an alternative manner is isolation, which is not presented as fuel for civilisation but as Caliban's psychological trauma, which he explores through storytelling as a postdramatic element. Apart from the narration, the play demonstrates other uses of postdramatic elements to suggest an isolated figure on an uninhabited island like the use of objects such as toy boats and tape of sea sounds. Instead of seeing Crouch's work as a postcolonial response to Shakespeare's work, this paper will try to investigate how the use of island setting and the theme of isolation can make it closer to a Robinsonade. By this means, it will also try to ask whether an adaptation could also be read in relation to a work that is not intended as its source text. ; Ja, Kaliban Tima Croucha to postdramatyczna adaptacja Burzy Shakespeare'a wchodząca w skład zbioru Ja, Shakespeare, w którym odtworzone zostały najbardziej zmarginalizowane postaci z Szekspirowskich dzieł. Adaptacja koncentruje się na Kalibanie, który próbuje przetrwać po tym, jak Prospero i inni opuszczają wyspę. W odróżnieniu od postkolonialnych przeróbek sztuk Szekspirowskich w tej wersji Kaliban nie jest pochłonięty myślami o zemście. Jako że jest sam na wyspie, skupia się głównie na potrzebie interakcji społecznej. Na podstawie zarówno strukturalnych porównań pomiędzy Burzą a Robinsonem Crusoe Daniela Defoe, jak i podobnych tematów takich jak wyspa, relacja pan – sługa, ekspansja kolonialna i polityka władzy, celem niniejszego artykułu jest omówienie adaptacji Croucha jako przykładu transformacji typowych motywów dla robinsonady w odpowiedzi na ideologiczne adaptacje tekstów Shakespeare'a. Wśród tego typu transformacji wymienić można pojęcie przeżycia, które w dziele Croucha ukazane jest poprzez percepcję tubylców. Tym razem zamiast osoby obcego, który zmaga się z życiem na nieznanym terytorium, przedstawiona jest osoba tubylca, który staje się niewolnikiem na wyspie w znajomym sobie środowisku. Izolacja jest kolejnym motywem użytym w sposób alternatywny. Nie jest ona przedstawiona jako stymulator wprowadzania cywilizacji tylko jako trauma psychologiczna Kalibana, którą analizuje za pomocą opowieści jako element postdramatyczny. Nie tylko narracja jest tu wykorzystana w inny sposób. Inne postdramatyczne elementy to między innymi izolacja na niezamieszkałej wyspie, która wzmocniona jest zabawkowymi stateczkami i odgłosem morza. W artykule odchodzę od analizy dzieła Croucha jako postkolonialnej odpowiedzi na sztukę Shakespeare'a. Skupiam się natomiast na tym, w jaki sposób użycie motywów wyspy i izolacji zbliża dzieło do robinsonady. Kolejnym celem jest odpowiedź na pytanie, czy adaptacja może też być odczytana w relacji do takiego dzieła, które niekoniecznie jest pierwotnym tekstem źródłowym.

Martin McDonagh's Hangmen (2015) is a contextual play as the work derives its material from an actual historical event, the abolition of capital punishment in the 1960s, and presents this topic in 2015 soon after the debates of reintroducing death penalty in Britain. The play refers to two distinct socio-historical backgrounds, 1960s Britain as the context of the plot, and the twenty-first century as the context of the audience/reader. Hangmen takes place on a very specific date in history, the year in which hanging was suspended in Britain. The comical portrayal of what seems to be the last hanging case in the country makes it possible to problematise the integrity of the judicial system at the time. Presentation of the rivalry between two famous executioners in the country, Harry Allen and Albert Pierrepoint, also underlines the play's socio-political relation to a certain context. What is equally noteworthy about Hangmen is McDonagh's choice of this topic at a time in which the issue of capital punishment is raised again in Britain. Concerning recent arguments about the reintroduction of death penalty, it is observed that McDonagh also initiates a discussion about the legitimation of state violence through a depiction of the history of hanging. In light of this observation, the aim of this article is to discuss McDonagh's topical dark comedy as a political intervention in the debate over death penalty in Britain by mentioning the correlation between the play and appropriate case studies of several hanging offences in the history of Britain. ; Martin McDonagh'ın Hangmen (2015) adlı oyunu, konusunu 1960'larda idam cezasının kaldırılması gibi gerçek bir tarihî olaydan alması ve aynı konuyu 2015'te bu cezanın yeniden getirilmesi tartışmalarının ardından işlemesi bakımından tarihsel bağlamı olan bir oyundur. Oyun, konusunun geçtiği 1960'lar İngiltere'sine ve okuyucunun/seyircinin içinde bulunduğu yirmi birinci yüzyıla, yani birbirinden uzak iki farklı sosyal ve tarihî döneme gönderme yapmaktadır. Hangmen, İngiltere'nin geçmişinde çok belirli bir tarih olan idam cezasının kaldırıldığı yılda geçmektedir. Komik bir biçimde ülkedeki son idam cezası olarak gösterilen olay, bu dönemdeki adalet sisteminin doğruluğunu sorgulamayı mümkün kılmaktadır. Bu dönemde ülkenin meşhur iki infazcısı olan Harry Allen ve Albert Pierrepoint'in oyunda karakterler olarak kullanılması ve aralarındaki rekabetin gösterilmesi de yine oyunun belirli bir döneme gönderme yaptığını göstermektedir. Bu oyunla ilgili eşit derecede önemli olan bir diğer konu ise McDonagh'nın bu konuyu işlemeyi İngiltere'de idam cezasının yeniden getirilmesinin gündemde olduğu bir zamanda seçmiş olmasıdır. This study examines re-writings of Shakespeare in British drama, Edward Bond's Lear (1971), Arnold Wesker's The Merchant (1976) and Howard Barker's Gertrude-The Cry (2002) in relation to the socio-political, historical and cultural backgrounds of the periods in which they were generated. These works are considered both as commentary to the events of their historical background, and as plays that question Shakespeare's literary and cultural status. Thus, it is asserted that re-writing has a significant function in terms of creating alternative ideas to the ways in which critical issues are discussed in the canonical texts and their political and ideological foundations. In the Introduction, re-writing's association with adaptation theory and intertextuality as a postmodern practice is considered. Additionally, the development of Shakespearean re-writing, its reception, and its functions are discussed. Within the scope of these ideas, it is concluded that Shakespeare's works are questioned, and their ideological aspects are criticised through reworkings. In the first chapter, Edward Bond's Lear is examined as a Marxist-Socialist appropriation written against Shakespeare's uncritical attitude to issues like class inequality and violence in King Lear (1606). Considering the problems of the 1970s' Britain such as unequal class structure, student and worker's riots, inefficiency of leftist politicians, violence triggered by Stalinism and the Vietnam War, it is discussed that Bond's appropriation is not only a Shakespeare re-writing but also a play that sheds light on the concerns of its period. In the second chapter, Arnold Wesker's The Merchant is analysed in terms of identity politics as the play criticises Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice (1605) for its antisemitic discourse. Accordingly, Wesker's re-writing, as a play produced in the post-Holocaust context, is correlated with some events in its historical background such as Arab-Israeli conflict, Six Day War and Yom Kippur War. In the third chapter, Howard Barker's Gertrude-The Cry is discussed as a response to the representation of the woman figure in Shakespeare's Hamlet (1600) in terms of sexual and gender politics. Considering the issues of the play such as individual will and sexual freedom in relation to the regulations of New Labour as the ruling party in Britain in the 2000s, Barker's work is also analysed as a criticism of its historical context. In the Conclusion, it is revealed that re-writings of Shakespeare in British Drama reflect theoretical, cultural, socio-political and ideological aspects of the periods in which they are created, and they also adopt a critical attitude to Shakespeare's works. Bu oyunlar hem dönemlerinde yaşanan olaylara birer yorum niteliğinde değerlendirilmektedir, hem de Shakespeare'in edebiyat dünyasındaki konumunu sorgulamak üzere yazılmış eserler olarak ele alınmaktadır. Böylelikle, edebiyatta yeniden yazımın önemli kaynak eserlerde ele alınan konuların işleniş biçimine, politik ve ideolojik altyapılarına karşı alternatif fikirler üretmek bakımından önemli bir işlevi olduğu savunulmaktadır. Giriş kısmında yeniden yazımın adaptasyon kuramı ve postmodern metinlerarasılık ile ilişkisi üzerinde durulmaktadır. Ardından, Shakespeare'in eserlerinin uyarlamalarının edebî tarihteki gelişimi, nasıl karşılandığı ve ne gibi işlevleri olduğu tartışılmaktadır. Bunun sonucunda da yeniden yazımlar yoluyla Shakespeare'in eserlerinin sorgulandığı ve ideolojik yanlarının eleştirildiği gibi çıkarımlar belirtilmektedir. Tezin birinci bölümünde Edward Bond'un Lear adlı oyunu, Kral Lear (1606) eserindeki sınıf eşitsizliği ve şiddet gibi konulara, aynı zamanda da Shakespeare'in bunlara kayıtsız tutumuna karşı Marksist sosyalist bakış açısıyla yazılmış bir yeniden yazım olarak incelenmektedir. 1970'ler İngiltere'sinde yaşanan sorunlar arasındaki sınıf eşitsizliği, öğrenci ve işçi grevleri, sol görüşlü liderlerin etkisizliği, Stalinizm ve Vietnam Savaşı ile artan şiddet göz önüne alınarak, Bond'un oyununun yalnızca bir Shakespeare uyarlaması değil aynı zamanda döneminin olaylarına ışık tutan bir eser olduğu tartışılmaktadır. İkinci bölümde, Arnold Wesker'ın The Merchant adlı eseri, Shakespeare'in Venedik Taciri (1605) adlı oyununu içerdiği Yahudi aleyhtarı söylem bakımından eleştirdiğinden kimlik politikaları kapsamında incelenmektedir. Nazi soykırımı sonrası dönemde üretilmiş bir eser olan Wesker'ın yeniden yazımı, yazıldığı dönemde yaşanan Arap-İsrail çatışması, Altı Gün Savaşı ve Yom Kippur Savaşı gibi olaylarla ilişkilendirilmektedir. Son bölümde, Howard Barker'ın Gertrude-The Cry adlı oyunu Shakespeare'in Hamlet (1600) adlı eserindeki kadın karakterin temsiline karşı cinsel politika bağlamında bir yanıt olarak ele alınmaktadır. Eserde değinilen bireysel irade ve cinsel özgürlük gibi konular, oyunun yazıldığı 2000'li yıllarda İngiltere'de iktidarda olan Yeni İşçi Partisi'nin kadınlar ve birey özgürlüğü kapsamında çıkardığı yasalar bağlamında düşünülerek döneme karşı eleştiri olarak incelenmektedir. Sonuç bölümünde, İngiliz tiyatrosunda Shakespeare'in yeniden yazımlarının kendi dönemlerinin kuramsal, kültürel, sosyo-politik ve ideolojik temellerini yansıtırken Shakespeare'in eserlerine de eleştirel bir tutum sergilediği ortaya konmaktadır. Bu çalışmada ele alınan üç eserin tematik ve teknik olarak incelenmesi sonucu, Shakespeare'in oyunlarının yeniden yazımlar yoluyla farklı dönemlerin önemli olaylarını ve konularını yansıtacak şekilde evrildikleri tartışılmaktadır.
