This article explores public reactions to a murder of a foreign managing director running a French-owned textile factory in interwar Poland. The 1932 killing provoked an intense discussion in the press, which sheds light on Polish identity and narrative strategies used by the elites to rationalize the consequences of Poland's peripheral economic status. The study is based on discourse analysis of over 200 press articles. I argue that commentators saw the killing as the result of French policies in the factory, and interpreted these in turn as the result of either the Polish government's negligence, influenced by Paris's diplomats, or of global capitalism. The most dramatic arguments framed French policies in Żyrardów as a form of colonialism or slavery. This framing was based on the journalists' perception of French actions as transgressions of two imagined hierarchies: a geo-racial division of the world, and the local hierarchy of labor.
France was a major source of foreign capital for interwar Poland, both through government loans, and private investment. The French presence was particularly strong in the extraction and paper industries, in energy production, and in banking. French engagement was partly a consequence of the alliance between the two countries, and can be seen as an element of France's security policy in the East. Poland was forced to give its ally costly concessions, including special treatment of French companies. Hence, Poland can be seen as the object of quasi-imperial expansion, and in the interwar period the left accused France of colonial policies, Nonetheless, Poland remained the initiating side of many negotiations with the French. In Polish historiography this economic foreign policy towards France is often interpreted as a series of costly mistakes. Considering the difficult situation on interwar financial markets, Polish policy can be seen, however, as successful, as it allowed the new state to achieve many of its goals. These included taking over German companies in Silesia, significant investments in infrastructure (including the harbour in Gdynia and the coal trunk line), and outfitting the Polish army. Pieniądze francuskie były też konieczne dla uzbrojenia polskiej armii. Tak negocjatorzy francuscy, jak i prywatni przedsiębiorcy znad Sekwany działali w Polsce z pozycji siły. W polskiej prasie pojawiały się oskarżenia zachodniego sojusznika o działania kolonialne. W czasie rozluźnienia sojuszu w ostatnich latach wielkiego kryzysu władze polskie podjęły bardziej zdecydowane stanowisko wobec Francuzów. Wyrazem był m.in. konflikt wokół Żyrardowa i elektrowni w Warszawie. Ostatecznie jednak starania o pożyczkę z Rambouillet przesądziły o wygaszeniu konfliktów przez stronę polską.
For much of the 20th century Polish governments heavily regulated foreign trade, but the degree of this influence differed. When Poland became independent in1918, the state took almost complete control over the sector. Atentative liberalization was stopped by the customs war with Germany in1925, and later by the Great Depression. The final years before the Second World War saw an increase inthe state's influence through the exchange control. Regulations became stricter under different conditions inthe post-war period, with the state monopolizing foreign trade entirely. After the end of Stalinism in1956, Poland slowly opened up its economy, but until the 1980s changes were limited inscope. Atrue breakthrough came with the transition, which started in1989. Notonly did the country open up, but inthe coming years, the government ceded some of its powers relating toforeign trade tothe European Union. During the interwar period, as well as after 1989, Poland followed worldwide trends. The communist period was an aberration inthe sense of producing an ineffective system. Both before the war and under the communist regime, foreign trade was expected tobring mostly static gains. Początkowo była ona bardzo ograniczona, przyspieszyła jednak wlatach 80., zasadniczy przełom nastąpił zaś wtrakcie transformacji gospodarczej po1989 r. Charakterystyczną konsekwencją integracji gospodarczej następnych latbyło scedowanie wielu instrumentów prowadzenia polityki handlowej nainstytucje międzynarodowe –przede wszystkim zaś naUnię Europejską. Zarówno wczasie Drugiej, jak iTrzeciej Rzeczypospolitej, polityka handlowa prowadzona była zgodnie ztrendami światowymi. Odstępstwem od nich była narzucona zzewnątrz polityka latkomunizmu.
The article analyses the evolution of geographical and price evolution of Polish exports of coal, and explains the much smaller imports. Using detailed statistical data, it shows how state intervention (via support for and control of cartelisation of the sector) influenced prices achieved by Polish exporters. More generally, it places the Polish coal policy within the wider set of balance-of-payment supporting measures.
The article explores institutional obstacles to the growth of Polish interwar foreign trade. Looking at interwar analyses of private entities and governmental agencies engaged in the trade, it shows the endemic organisational and institutional problems in the sector, linking them with belated modernisation of Polish lands in the XIX century. Seen in this light, the significant governmental engagement in and control of foreign trade can be seen as another example of state intervention trying to cover areas of insu'cient modernisation. At the same time, the dificult situation of interwar Poland meant, that some governmental actions, while crucial from the point of view of monetary policy, were detrimental to the organisation of the foreign trade sector.

Even then, however, support for the opposition was not unanimous, and it was even less so in previous years. Most Poles considered the communist system forced, exogenous, oppressive, unacceptable, and supported by the Soviet threat. Still, individual reactions were varied: there were different paths to be taken through communism. The authors of the paper discuss how these paths contributed to differing recollections of the period. They focus on the collective memory of political parties and politicians, particularly on the controversial question of collaborating with the communist regime and the rights to veteran status among the former opposition members.
