Power is a fundamental category in the field of political and security sciences. It occupies a key position in practically every theory of international relations. Some of the categories that describe power can be defined using similar terms, although there are also those that define similar categories in a completely different manner. This is what happens when you find similar definitions for terms such as 'power, 'strength', 'authority', or 'influence'. Identifying the factors that make up a state's power is no less problematic. Even if some elements of power seem to be unchanged (military or economic factors) and important for all currents of the theory of international relations, the differences in their rank may be significant and crucial for understanding the differences between particular theoretical approaches. The aim of the article is to show both the fixed elements of individual theories (primarily realistic and liberal, but also radicalism and postmodernism) as well as the differences in defining the power of their individual representatives.

The modern power of the USA is based on traditional sources: the size of the territory and demographics, economy, army and soft power factors (culture, foreign policy, values, public diplomacy). The United States creates a power that has sustainable resources backed by an efficient mechanism of action and the will of the public to implement these plans. Currently, the US has enough resources, and most importantly, in the current international environment, it is able to use them to maintain an advantage over its competitors. The article presents the elements of US power that determine its advantage over other countries and the weaknesses that may limit its influence. This largely determines the research methods used (statistical and comparative). The latter method allows to determine the scale of US hegemony and what are the chances of its maintenance in the 21st century.

Russia has always been a country seeking the Great Power status. Even though it lost its importance after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the desire to return to the role of the creator of international order force it to introduce new strategy that will implement soft power resources. This represents a certain obstacle for Russia, which traditionally is accustomed to hard power resources like economic pressure or the use of armed forces. Culture is Russia's soft power resource that is significant. Values can be more problematic for Russia, because in Moscow's intentions they should be different from the Western values. Russia is trying to create an alternative soft power project, competitive to that of the West. Russia is trying to make good use of its diplomacy, including digital diplomacy, in order to show the use of its hard power to be seen as soft.

Brazil's position has been increasing since the end of the 20th century. It is determined by changes in the contemporary international order. The reforms in Brazil are followed an increase in the country's economic, military and soft power. Brazil has a chance to achieve the position of a regional power using its resources of strength, but also diplomacy and commitment to building influence through institutions.

India is a country experiencing tremendous eco­nomic growth while its political ambitions are aiming higher and higher as well. The country is trying to increase its global power using re­sources and instruments of soft power. India is learning this art anew, using its rich culture and reaching back to its past traditions. References made to religious diversity and democracy are another powerful tool in the state arsenal.There has been a reorientation in foreign policy as well, which refocused on supporting the state's economic development by seeking and maintaining good relations with foreign countries. Soft power instruments have grown in importance, especially as concerns culture and values, which combined with peaceful poli­cies made for a truly great opportunity of using soft power.

The United States, as a leading world power, has to face China – an emerging powerful rival. The potential of both states' power is measured by universal indicators. On a military level, these indicators are: military expenditure, soldiers/reserve/soldiers abroad, offensive weapons, nuclear warheads. On an economic level: GDP value, reserve currency/public debt to GNP, direct investment home and abroad. With regard soft power, six categories have been taken into consideration: diplomacy, socio-political, socio-economic, education, high and popular culture. All of the three researched levels were correlated with both states' political system specificity and the character of the international arena's relations. It allowed for the assessment of the current levels of both states' power as well as their future prospects.

Uwzględniając powyższe uwarunkowania, ważne jest przyjęcie, że siła państwa jest zespolonym wynikiem wojskowych, ekonomicznych i miękkich czynników. Należy jednak uwzględnić czynniki zewnętrzne, systemowe, które ostatecznie określają siłę państwa. W badaniach nad problematyką siły państwa wykorzystano kilka metod badawczych. Analiza systemową, której wartość w badaniach siły jest szczególnie ważna z uwagi na konieczność określenia jej miejsca w systemie międzynarodowym na jego różnych poziomach. Ważne, szczególnie w zakresie potęgometrii są metody statystyczne, które uwzględniają zarówno stronę ilościową, jak i jakościową badanych zjawisk. W badaniach nad potęgą zastosowanie ma również metoda porównawcza (analogia) zwana też komparatywną, z uwagi na możliwości wykrycia podobieństw oraz różnic między procesami i zjawiskami.
