The article compares data of two specialised nation-wide surveys by VCIOM in 1991 and 1998, which enables tracing the dynamics of a number of characteristics and assessments. The new increase in the level of declared religiosity after the decline of 1995-96 (presently, 52 per cent of Russian citizens call themselves Orthodox believers) takes place against the background of rising distrust with the Church that becomes more and more politically engaged, on the part of all groups, including believers themselves. While the principal socio-demographic structure of Orthodox adherents stays the same (most of them are elderly women with a low level of education), the greatest activity in religious conversion in the 1990s was displayed by Russian citizens in the young, medium, and mature age, representatives of urbanised and the best educated groups. It entailed some changes in belief towards reduction of religious intolerance and, on the contrary, intensification of moralistic aspects of belief, emphasis on the social role of religion and the Church. At the same time, due to a certain socio-demographic equalisation of the strata of believers and non-believers, their political and ideological positions became much closer, whereas the immunity of better educated and younger respondents and residents of big cities against anti-Western ideas and symbols and populist rhetoric, and their activity in opposition to growing great-power trends and authoritarian figures noticeably decreased. ; The article compares data of two specialised nation-wide surveys by VCIOM in 1991 and 1998, which enables tracing the dynamics of a number of characteristics and assessments. ; In mid-December 2001 in Moscow at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior was the most important and fundamental topics for consideration by the readings of the Romanov VI World Russian People's Council. Subject Council: "Russia: faith and civilization. Dialogue eras". We see that for many years in the new Russian Orthodox Church is considered the most pressing issues of our view. The Cathedral is held under the auspices of the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is attended by many patriotic intellectuals, leaders of political parties, movements, leaders of factions in the State Duma. A completely different life in the western civilization and the frame in the Western philosophical tradition understood the problems of "faith and civilization, power, and holiness". Many years in the new Russia under the auspices of the Russian Orthodox Church considers the panorama of the most pressing issues of today. In the Western consciousness the dynamics of power and holiness is seen as an attribute of the savagery of the feudal society, as a sign of Patriarchal social relations, as in the best case, the product оf manipulative activity on management of public consciousness in a totalitarian society. We are building a civil society of a new type is a new civil society in the colors of Russia. We had the civil society but it was traditional and old. Today we combine the three parts of Russia the pre-revolutionary, communist and post-communist Russia.
; The article focuses on how revolutionary terrorism at the beginning of XX century was perceived by Russian women. The author proves that at the beginning of XX century Russian feminists condemned the terrorism as a male means to carry on the struggle. But on the other hand the women`s participation in terrorism acts was considered by the feminists as a tool to grant equal rights to women. Besides it argues that the women estimated the terrorism according to their political views and ideas.
; The article puts forward a hypothesis about the identity of Ivan Peresvetov and Ivan Fyodorov. The author proves that Peresvetovs draft reforms were in the framework of the early 16th-century Utopian ideas and, in some propositions, elaborates the standards of jurisprudence of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
Belief – integrative expression of the human attitudes toward the world, which is identical to the presence of consciousness in particular part of life and is not limited to religious, political, artistic, scientifi installations, and with the need to accompany a person in the way of understanding the boundaries of existence, where beliefs, ideological axioms, images appear its species. The problem of correlation of the material and spiritual worlds, creates prerequisites of deep belief as a specifi phenomenon of the limit of human existence, create an alternative opportunity to confront the chasm, emptiness, fiiteness. It is also an attempt to analyze the epistemological measure of belief. The author argues that the categorical opposite of belief is not knowledge, but doubts, thereby providing the status of ideological belief of the truth - the belief that allows to connect the attitude and perception of the world, to transform them into a worldview.Belief recognized as a productive way out from problems in life, superstition and fanaticism as closure within them. Belief is treated as separate idealizing activity that connect existence and transcendence. The theoretical part of the research contains a project of the ontological and epistemological understanding of belief as a special spiritual activity, which is characterized by the unity of transcendence and existence. The author analyses the main precepts and aspects of manifesting belief and its connection with the concept of despair and doubt. An attempt is made to determine the place, role and means of a personal belief's creation in the historical of humanity, which leads to examining the contraposition of belief and despair.Investigated temporal expressions of belief, with varied focus: conviction - in the past, and trust - in the present and persuasion - in the future. Belief is the process of transcending the limits of the present in a unique past and an uncertain future by axiological and logical modeling of integral human being.
SUMMARY: Mikhail Dolbilov explores the broad state-led campaign of conversion to Orthodoxy in the Western borderlands after the January uprising of 1863. The author situates his research in the context of recent studies of religion and confession in the Russian empire that highlight the secular and etatist approach of the imperial government to the Orthodox Church and conversion to Orthodoxy. Focusing on middle-rank bureaucrats who were in charge of confessional policy in the Western borderlands, Dolbilov argues that the development of popular Catholicism (as a pan-European phenomenon of moving toward a more visceral and mystical mode of religiosity) brought about a perception of Catholicism as ill-suited for the collective identification of subjects with the sovereign. The author analyzes in detail the growing desire of middle and high ranking functionaries to engage in an interventionist policy by way of using police and administrative coercion in the process of converting of the local Catholic population to Orthodoxy. The author further analyzes the details of the conversion campaign with accompanying misdemeanors, violence, and fraud. He notes that this large scale social engineering effort to link political allegiance with confessional status brought about unexpected consequences. It exacerbated conflicts between local functionaries and high-ranked bureaucrats, as well as those between the Orthodox community in the Western borderlands and newly converted Orthodox lay people. The article concludes with an analysis of the failure of the state-led conversion campaign, the key to which was the growing concern with the spread of atheist ideas and concomitant rise of political radicalism. The author infers that the Western borderlands' campaign demonstrated the limits of mass proselytizing and interventionist policy in a confessional state and suggests that it ushered imperial bureaucrats toward the path that ultimately resulted in the acceptance of freedom of conscience in 1905.
