The chapter is devoted to the study of negative manifestations in the verbal reality and political culture of the Merovingian society in the last third of the 6th century, which, in the form of slander and defamation, started the trial and inquiry, became triggers for murders and bloodthirsty violence. The Neustrian court of Chilperic and Fredegund became the scene of a fierce family struggle for power, where verbal deception led to the deaths of two princes and queens. The analysis showed that the main directions for political discrediting and execution of the personal enemies of the royal couple from the secular and church elite were accusations of attempt on life of the king in order to seize royal power and prosecution for witchcraft crimes. One of the conclusions of the article was the verification of the synchrony and causal relationship between the three stages of Fredegund's grief for her dead sons and the peak aggression of the queen's barbarian cruelty against her political enemies. New research interpretations of famous historical cases from authentic sources are proposed.
The article explores the boundary between the permissible freedom in the personal and political activity of the Merovingian queens and the extraordinary actions of Clothild and Radegund, which brought them on the painful path of the Christian search for consolation and absolution. The political culture of the Franks in the sixth century allowed an active position for the Merovingian queens as spouses of Frankish kings and mothers of royal heirs. The personal political choice of Queen Clothild and her desire for regency with her grandchildren led to the tragic death of relatives. Deeply experiencing the dramatic events in her life, Queen Radegund chose the monastic path and extreme forms of ascetic practices. Based on the contrasting descriptions of these queens, in the ambiguous assessments of three authors of contemporary sources (Gregory of Tours, Venantius Fortunatus and the nun Baudonivia), gender paradoxes were formulated for manifestations of extreme cruelty and violent self-aggression.
The article examines the discrepancy between the modus vivendi of the Merovingian kings and the norms of secular and ecclesiastical laws in the field of family and marital relations in the sixth century in the conditions of subordination of the ideological sphere to the church institution. Gregory of Tours represented with prejudice the Christianization of Frankish society in his historical work with numerous eliminations and distortions. My hypothesis discloses the connection between the concealment about the date of Clovis's baptism in the Decem Libri Historiarum and Clothild's regency with minor sons. Behind the wedding clothes of incestuous marriages (including brother's widow, wife's sister, stepmother, cousin) the Merovingians were hiding political conspiracies (the trial of Bishop Praetextatus, the accusation of Gregory of Tours the spreading rumours about Fredegund) and a fierce struggle for power. New interpretations of controversial historical events are proposed.
