Anhand von drei muslimischen Denkern vergleicht der Autor die öffentlichen Debatten um Trennung von Staat und Religion in Ägypten während dreier historischer Perioden. Für die Periode der konstitutionellen Monarchie (1923-1951) wird 'Ali Abd ar-Raziq vorgestellt, für die Zeit der Revolution unter Nasser (1952-1970) Khalid Muhammad Khalid und für die Zeit nach 1970 unter Sadat und Mubarak Faraj 'Ali Fuda. Der Vergleich zeigt eine Kontinuität der Debatte hinsichtlich der Befürwortung eines säkularen Staates und der Ablehung der Scharia als bindendem Recht. Unterschiede sind vor allem in der Stellung der Religion in der Gesellschaft auszumachen. Während Abd ar-Raziq und Khalid den Islam weitgehend aus dem öffentlichen Leben auszuklammern suchten, betrachtete Fuad den Islam als einen integralen Bestandteil der ägyptischen Gesellschaft. In dieser Hinsicht erwies Fuad sich als Realpolitiker seiner Zeit, der den Einfluss der Islamisten auf die ägyptische Gesellschaft anerkannte. Dennoch wurde er 1992 von Islamisten ermordet. "The issue of religious authority has long fascinated and ignited scholars across a range of disciplines: history, anthropology, the sociology of religion, and political science. Religious Knowledge, Authority, and Charisma juxtaposes religious leadership in premodern and modern Islam with examples from the Judaic tradition.
