Correctional Facilities and Correctional Treatment: International Perspectives
This book provides international perspectives on corrections, correctional treatment, and penitentiary laws. Although its focus is on African and South American countries, the information provided can be easily expanded to North America and Europe. The chapters present legal frameworks and applied research on prisons and their potential to deter crime and reduce recidivism rates. The book puts the human rights agenda at the forefront and is a useful resource for those who work in corrections, including prison, education, and probation officers.
Estatismo e Sistema Interestatal em Mikhail Bakunin
In: Em debate, Heft 16, S. 41-54
ISSN: 1980-3532
Prison Guards' Attitudes Towards the Prevention of Sexual Contacts Between Inmates
In: The Howard journal of criminal justice, Band 49, Heft 4, S. 361-374
ISSN: 1468-2311
Abstract: This article presents the main findings of an innovative Portuguese research project on prison guards' attitudes towards the prevention of sexual contacts between inmates. Sexuality in prisons is still a poorly‐studied issue, although its increasing visibility demands a better understanding of prison dynamics. Results show that guards hold very favourable attitudes towards the prevention of forced sexual contacts between inmates, but they are more ambiguous concerning consensual sexuality. This result is influenced by the characteristics of the inmates under the guards' supervision and by the prison guards' knowledge of the existence of sexual contacts between inmates. The results will be discussed, along with their impact on the development of training programmes and policies regarding sexual contacts between inmates.
Arson and arsonists: Results from a study with a portuguese sample
The authors present data concerning the identification of Portuguese forest arsonists who were serving prison sentences for this crime. These offenders present several psychological features (alcohol abuse, mental illness, psychiatric care, low intelligence,.) and are issued from poor socio-economic backgrounds. No traces of antisocial or psychopathic personality were found. The authors also refer to necessity of taking a closer look to other causes of forest fires, mainly accidental 3nes, that account for a large proportion of occurrences and show that prevention is not functioning- well and negligent behaviours are riot considered for punishment, focusing on the importance of an environmental conscience that seems to be far away from the legislations trends on these matters.

Efficacy Assessment of an Intervention Program With Batterers
In: Small group research: an international journal of theory, investigation, and application, Band 46, Heft 4, S. 455-482
ISSN: 1552-8278
This study examines the efficacy of an intervention program with male batterers. Twenty-six batterers who attended the intervention and 19 batterers who did not attend the intervention were compared using self-report measures. Batterers who attended the intervention showed significant reductions in abusive behaviors, in attitudes toward domestic violence, in risk of future violence, and in psychopathology, and an increase in self-esteem and problem solving. These changes were confirmed at the 6-month follow-up. The control group also revealed reductions in abusive behaviors, psychopathology, and risk of violence; however, the intervention group showed higher effect sizes. Comparing the groups at post-test, differences were found on abusive behaviors, attitudes, and risk of violence; at the follow-up, differences were found on abusive behaviors, attitudes, self-esteem, and problem solving, with intervention group showing more positive changes. These findings suggest that the intervention program has a therapeutic effect and reduces the risk of future violence.

Analysis of Portugal´s macroenvironment in the view of digital transformation of SMEs using the peste framework - exploration of political factors
The digital Transformation has revolutionized entire sectors in recent years. Yet, SMEs struggle to successfully implement such profound organizational transformation and thus jeopardize their competitiveness in the long term. Scholars study internal, company-related factors almost exclusively, whereas external factors are only sparsely considered. There fore ,this thesis applies the PESTE-framework to investigate external factors affecting the digital transformation of Portuguese SMEs. This section explores political aspects in Portugal, comparing them to Italy and Israel and analyzing possible influence on SMEs' digital transformation. Based on these findings, recommendations were developed, including interdisciplinary data collection processes, innovation hubs, tailored trainings, and trust seals.
