Despite extensive studies by urban theorists into the growth and development of cities, little within these accounts explains the role and influence of property development as a catalyst for such growth. The most recent accounts of property development in this context were made in the early 1990s by Healey, Gore and Nicholson, and such accounts not only focussed on a process-based view but were made predominantly through the eyes of economists, political economists, planners and social theorists with few property developer protagonists. Looking through the eyes of the property developer, and assisted by the author's related history as a builder and developer, a new model emerges which is based on: a theoretical analysis; three case studies of cityscapes in Australia- in Townsville, the Palmer and Railway Precincts (Queensland) and in Newcastle, the Honeysuckle Precinct (New South Wales); further case examples and auto-ethnographic reflection. A model is built which articulates the nature of constituent land parcels within cityscapes, the conditions for their transition and resultant creation of new developments, which impact on the growth of cityscapes. The mercurial and transient nature of the property developer and the mechanistic nature of property development are revealed, which goes beyond traditional process-based views. Developer protagonists which are often seen to be the root cause of unwanted growth are revealed to be subject to a greater mechanistic force that relies on alignments and windows of operation. A new and missing lens is provided to the existent body of research into the growth of cities through the eyes of the property developer which informs researchers, planners and policy- makers. The often high level, morphological view of planners and policy makers is balanced by a model which is built from the ground up, revealing the mechanism of property development and its key forces and protagonists.

En salud, tan importantes como las normas y políticas y, aún más, son las características éticas de su atención que, en definitiva, establecen la diferencia de la atención humana en salud. No son las regulaciones ni las leyes que existan para determinadas conductas y comportamientos las que generan una actitud tierna y generosa hacia los adultos mayores enfermos. Solamente profesionales con esa disposición pueden responder adecuadamente a sus necesidades. Si ellos no lo hacen y actúan de la manera tradicional con que procede el personal sanitario, los bioeticistas perderán la verdadera dimensión del sentido humano propio de la bioética médica que, tal como las demás disciplinas, tiene particularidades propias de acuerdo con sus diferentes tendencias y tradiciones culturales. Dado el incremento de la expectativa de vida de la población humana, particularmente en el mundo desarrollado y en desarrollo, mayor es la necesidad de características especiales de la atención en salud a los adultos que envejecen, lo cual significa contar con una acción mancomunada de los bioeticistas, independientemente de sus convicciones políticas y antecedentes culturales, centrada en responder adecuadamente a las necesidades de salud propias de los adultos mayores. Only medical professionals with character traits developed in response to patient needs will make the needed difference. If they do not attend to the classical tradition in ethics which focuses attention on the character of health care workers, bioethicists will miss an important dimension of contemporary medical Bioethics, like every international discipline has its variations, cultural styles, particular concerns, unique perspectives. Once the problem of an increasingly aging population is recognized everywhere in the developed world, then a particular style of medical care delivery is called for. This demand unites bioethicists, no matter their political or cultural background differences, in bringing the attention of medical care givers to the needs of aging patients. This article focuses attention on aging patient's needs, and the best bioethical measures to meet these needs in a humane way. Meeting this new population's medical needs provides an opportunity for medical professionals to reconnect with classical medicals ethics.

The idea of writing a chapter on aging seems particularly appropriate. I'm at the right age to address this topic. As I did the preparatory reading and research, I had an unusual experience. For the first time in my life, I felt like an expert. I could judge what people were saying about aging by my own experience. Besides facing aging myself, I work mainly with rural hospitals and nursing homes and hospice organizations where most of the patients are elderly. Both in my personal life and in my work, I am surrounded by the realities of aging and dying.In a recent book entitled Gray Dawn (1) on the economics and politics of aging, the author, Peter Peterson used a gripping metaphor to describe the challenge of an increasing aging population. Global aging, he said, is like a massive iceberg which very well could destroy even the most powerful economic vessels in the world. The aging population worldwide, according to this author, threatens human survival and is the most important challenge we face in the 21st century. We examine the Internet's impact on the cross-border distribution of cultural goods and assess its implications for cultural policy and cultural diversity. We present a stylized model of a two-country economy where governments are endowed with political preferences over the consumption of domestic content and enact import barriers and subsidies to protect it. We introduce peer-to-peer file sharing as a distinct distribution channel enabled by the Internet that provides access to all media products at a low cost. We report two main findings. First, the Internet renders legacy cultural policy inefficient, and the elimination of import barriers and the reduction of subsidized production can be desirable even when governments exhibit paternalistic preferences favoring the consumption of domestic content. And second, even though the Internet increases cultural diversity within countries, it can also reduce diversity across them.

Firms use consumer personal information to improve their products and services. Personal information is open to misuse, however, and when exploited for undesired or unexpected purposes reduces consumer's trust in the firm and their willingness to provide personal information. How should firms manage consumer privacy? We present a framework to help firms identify their privacy impact on consumers and respond appropriately. We argue that firms should consider the full spectrum of entities they interact with and which can exploit consumer personal information, which includes: the political environment (government), the security environment (hackers), the market environment (third party firms), and the social environment (peers). Firms should pursue strategies to maximize the privacy impact consumers derive across these domains, augmenting sources of positive impact and mitigating those that generate negative impact. Successful strategies for managing privacy combine four approaches: balanced cooperation with government, heightened security against hackers, limited disclosure to third party firms, and moderated propagation with peers.
