This paper seeks to contribute to the research on the role of the family in the educational decision-making of young people by highlighting two overlooked areas of study: vocational education and the role of siblings. It explores young, mainly working-class Finnish 15- to 17-year-olds' future expectations and decision-making processes concerning the choice between the academic and vocational tracks by drawing on interviews with the young participants of targeted support programmes and their parents. The aim of the paper is to shed light both on how parents try to influence their children's post-school choices and on young people's perceptions of the influence that parents and older brothers and sisters had on their aspirations towards vocational education. The paper demonstrates how horizons for action and educational choices are influenced by family traditions and advice, but that the pieces of advice dispensed by parents and siblings are not necessarily in congruence with each other. The familial suggestions work as a point of reference which is acknowledged and reflected on in the young people's process of mapping and recognising their own preferences. The paper suggests that while the goals of parents and older siblings would not necessarily be upward mobility, but rather to help young people to make a decent choice within a sector corresponding to their own, it is important to acknowledge their influence as a resource valued by many young people.

The strong emphasis placed on educational achievements as a precondition for successful adult life in Western societies attests to the fact that school plays a significant role in setting the standards for normality and conformity among young people today. The focus of this article is on the subjective orientations to schools and schooling expressed by young people on the margins of school. By adopting a biographical approach to young people's lives, this study examines how ninth graders make sense of their educational career from a particular transitional vantage point between compulsory and post-compulsory education, and from a marginal position in the current educational context. The article draws on research that focused on the biographies and future hopes of 15- to 17-year-old ninth graders attending either programmes for young people in need of support ('Pilot', part of targeted youth work) or an alternative school ('My Own Career' classes, part of flexible basic education). The article suggests that for young people on the margins of school, the contribution of compulsory education to the conceptualization of educational pathways in the future is ambivalent, sometimes even disempowering, and the weight of past conflicts with school forces young people to find ways to renegotiate their relationship with education.

Here we present an analysis of young people's orientations to the future in the context of intergenerational relations. We draw on qualitative interviews to examine how young people from less privileged backgrounds use their family as an anchor when mapping the landscape of possible futures. Further, we use extensive quantitative material from structured surveys to provide contextual information on how young people's imagined futures are shaped by the earlier generation. The study shows that the ingredients with which young people concoct their futures are in many ways grounded in their families' attempts to provide the most favourable support they can manage within the structural constraints and on the basis of the affordances that are available to them, but largely regardless of their class background. Our analysis also emphasises that there is a wide range of trajectories between academic careers conventionally understood as 'successful' and the careers resulting in 'social exclusion'.

The article examines the discourses related to gender in interviews with welfare service practitioners and their young, 18- to 29-year-old clients using 'boy discourse' as an analytical framework and J. M. Barrie's story of Peter Pan as a metaphorical framework. Those beyond the reach of the welfare services are referred to by the practitioners as 'lost young people'. Some practitioners see young men in particular as poor creatures, unable to achieve anything without a girlfriend, whose task is to get these Peter Pans 'on the right track' as Wendy does. The 'Lost Girls' are in a similar position to the 'Lost Boys' but the practitioners are more concerned about the boys. Their assumption is that girls can cope but boys need Wendys in order to succeed in life. As a result, the combined efforts of the female staff and nurturing girlfriends are seen as instrumental in steering 'failing boys' towards adulthood.

Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to offer a critical view of participatory policies and measures by highlighting that participation is not only a right for young people, but also an obligation for many. This obligated participation is studied conceptually and empirically.Design/methodology/approach– The paper introduces a novel typology of youth participation that demonstrates the dimensions of institutional framing and a degree of choice in participation. The typology is applied in an empirical study on how the participation rights and obligations are formed and handled within an educational programme, aiming to support young people at the margins.Findings– Young people are controlled by their participation obligations, and are guided to reach maturity and claim personal responsibility for their choices. The acceptance of an obligation to participate has to be negotiated with young people in services; otherwise they may opt out of supportive measures.Research limitations/implications– More research is needed on how youth participation terminology is used in political programmes and professional practices.Social implications– It is vital to discuss the options and obligations of young people in professional support measures and consider their implications for different groups of young people. At the policy level, the challenge is to ensure that the right to participate at community and political levels is not ignored or made inaccessible to young people at the margins.Originality/value– The typology diversifies understanding of youth participation and enables the analysis of participation types. It can be applied in youth studies, policy-making and practices.
