Abstract
The Foreword to this special issue of Itinerario describes the historical questions that inspired the Global Sea Routes project, from which the essays in the issue derive. It then illustrates the particular sources used in the project, namely logbooks, specifically those of the English East India Company, whose characteristics and interpretation problems are briefly presented. Then, it illustrates the digital tools used in the analysis of those sources and to obtain the digital graphic and cartographic representation of the research results; and finally, it introduces each individual essay contained in the issue.

I cosiddetti "zoo umani" rappresentarono un fenomeno di vastissima diffusione e popolarità nell'Europa delle grandi esposizioni nazionali, internazionali e universali a partire dalla metà dell'800. Forme spesso brutali di pubblica esibizione di esemplari di umanità selvaggia, gli "zoo umani", completi di "villaggi" ricostruiti nel dettaglio e popolati di "indigeni" importati come animali da esposizione, costituirono un ingrediente importante – per quanto raccapricciante – della mentalità e dell'auto-rappresentazione dell'Occidente "progredito", imperialista e colonizzatore. Grazie a questo libro, dopo che numerosi studi hanno indagato il fenomeno in larga parte del mondo occidentale (Germania, Francia, Inghilterra, Stati Uniti, Spagna, Svizzera, Russia, Danimarca) disponiamo ora della prima ricerca sistematica sulle "esposizioni umane" nell'Italia liberale e fascista, viste non solo nella loro funzione politico-ideologica, ma anche in rapporto ai loro antecedenti storici più antichi e nella varietà di declinazioni che, ben oltre la nozione restrittiva di "zoo umani", esse assunsero nel mondo dello spettacolo, in quello delle attività missionarie oltremare e negli ambienti della ricerca medica e antropologica. L'interesse suscitato dal libro ne ha reso necessaria una seconda edizione riveduta e accresciuta e con una Prefazione di Sandra Puccini. ll volume è attualmente in corso di traduzione presso la prestigiosa casa editrice inglese Routledge.

La Cina ha per secoli attirato l'interesse di osservatori e commentatori europei, costretti però a misurarsi non solo con gli ostacoli posti dalla lingua, dalla prassi amministrativa e da una mentalità aliena dall'apertura verso gli stranieri, ma anche con le difficoltà di interpretazione di una realtà istituzionale e culturale profondamente diversa da quella occidentale. Se da un lato la Cina imperiale si configurava come un apparato burocratico complesso, caratterizzato da una struttura fortemente gerarchica e basato su prassi legislative molto articolate, dall'altro si presentava come un edificio politico-istituzionale di natura monarchica, fortemente centralizzato nella figura dell'imperatore e indissolubilmente legato alla tradizione e a un patrimonio secolare di leggi scritte. Nel '700, man mano che gli occidentali cercavano di stringere relazioni commerciali e politiche sempre più strette, apparve evidente questo paradosso: la Cina, paese straordinariamente ricco di risorse e in piena espansione economica, demografica e territoriale, restava ancorata alle antiche tradizioni al punto da generare tra aspetti di dinamismo e inerzia della tradizione un corto circuito che agli occhi degli occidentali apparve come causa di stazionarietà. Tutti questi elementi concorsero nei secoli, dalla metà del '500 all'800 inoltrato, alla formazione dell'"enigma Cina", i cui lati di mistero e di ambiguità incominciarono ad essere meglio compresi grazie ai contributi di eruditi e missionari, autori di importanti traduzioni e compendi di testi classici del confucianesimo, alle quali si aggiunsero, agli inizi del sec. XIX, le prime traduzioni del Codice penale Qing. Il testo giuridico cinese, risalente all'epoca Tang (VII-X sec. d. C.), fu oggetto di frequenti ritocchi, modifiche e adattamenti, l'ultimo dei quali, nel 1805, fu quello adoperato dagli europei per le versioni in inglese, francese, spagnolo e italiano, dopo che già una parziale traduzione era stata eseguita in russo alla fine del '700. La disponibilità nelle maggiori lingue europee di un testo giuridico fondamentale per il funzionamento delle istituzioni imperiali Qing fu una acquisizione importantissima non solo per una migliore conoscenza delle istituzioni cinesi e delle concezioni giuridiche su cui esse si fondavano, ma anche per gli scopi pratici degli occidentali impegnati in attività di commercio sul territorio cinese. Era ormai tramontata l'epoca in cui la mediazione dei missionari gesuiti aveva prodotto rappresentazioni della Cina fortemente elogiative. Da qualche decennio l'interesse europeo stava rivolgendosi alla realtà concreta della vita politico-amministrativa e sociale dell'impero e nuove testimonianze stavano rivelando un paese ben diverso dalla civiltà oggetto della grande ammirazione di Gesuiti e Illuministi. Conoscere direttamente la lettera e la pratica delle diverse branche dell'amministrazione e in particolare della giustizia cinesi stava diventando fondamentale per tutelare gli interessi economici di occidentali ormai ben poco disposti all'ammirazione e, invece, sempre più inclini a considerare la Cina un paese tirannico, insicuro, inaffidabile, ma al tempo stesso un mercato che pareva riservare grandi promesse. Enigma Cina ripercorre le tappe fondamentali del dibattito europeo dal quale scaturirono immagini della Cina imperiale destinate a influenzare profondamente l'opinione pubblica dell'Occidente fino alla fine dell'epoca dinastica e anche successivamente.

George Thomas Staunton's 1810 translation of the so-called 'Qing penal code', the Ta Tsing Leu Lee (in the coeval transliteration), represented a major chapter in the history of Sino-European relations, particularly the evolution of British presence and activities in China. It was, at the same time, an important development in Sinological learning and Western knowledge of China in terms of understanding how to manage commercial relations that had been strained for over a century and were undergoing crucial changes at the beginning of the nineteenth century. It also represented a decisive step forward in a longstanding European discussion about the Chinese empire and its institutions, society, culture and civilization that attributed particular importance to the subject of law and justice and their place within the Chinese state. The first and second parts of this essay retrace the most significant moments of this debate in the European culture and experience, with a special focus on the eighteenth century and the Enlightenment period, when admiration for and even an idealization of China reached their peak, only to decline quite quickly and irreversibly at the turn of the century. While demonstrating that contradictory opinions about China always coexisted in European opinion, this essay proceeds to present Staunton's interpretation of the Chinese legal and judicial system and to clarify its particular meaning with regard to previous and current debates and the political-economic context of Sino-British relations. The last two parts deal with the discussions prompted in Europe by the English publication of the Qing code and the first two translations in French and Italian. In so doing, the essay shows that Staunton's intention to promote a favourable view of Chinese institutions and a respectful attitude towards them did not correspond to the development of mainstream European, and especially British, opinion. Indeed, in the decades following its publication, under the pressure of free trade and Protestant missionary opinion, British public opinion became increasingly negative, including the adoption of severely critical mental attitudes and intrusive policies towards China, thus preparing itself for the military aggression known as the First Opium War.

This volume is intended to encourage an interdisciplinary dialogue and to contribute to a better understanding of institutions and the law as central to the discourse on China in comparative law and in the history of ideas and cultural history. It tries to achieve this by assuming both a European and a Chinese perspective and moving from eighteenth-century perceptions and representations to the reform initiatives and theoretical discussions that continue to this day. The final result is hopefully an enhanced awareness of the extremely important role that Sino-Western encounters and comparisons have played, not only at a cultural level in global history over several centuries, but also in today's global politics and economics in which we are coping daily with concrete, pressing issues of reciprocal understanding in our efforts to achieve an enduringly peaceful and fruitful coexistence.

Over the past twenty years international and universal world expositions have been extensively researched as subjects of a thriving historiography with a distinctly comparative outlook. Numerous academic disciplines – particularly under the impetus of transnational, global and post-colonial approaches – have contributed to our understanding of them as major events tightly linked to fundamental historical phenomena such as nationalism, globalization, imperialism, consumerism, mass society and culture, scientific and technological progress, modernization and modernity itself. The essays collected in this volume explore different aspects of nineteenth and twentieth-century world expositions from the perspective of social and political history, the history of literature and of the performing arts, the history of ethno-anthropology and cultural history in general. They exemplify the different ways world expositions have affected popular imagination, literary creativity, forms of public entertainment, and social and political agency. These original contributions add significantly to what is now recognized as an established and dynamic field of research.

The so-called "human zoos" represented an incredibly widespread and extremely popular phenomenon in 19th-early 20th century Europe, at the age of the great national, international and universal exhibitions, of which they were a recurrent and a nearly constant element. The "human zoos" were brutish forms of public exhibitions of specimens of "savage" (mostly African) humans purposely imported as exotic animals from overseas by specialised merchants and entrepreneurs and hosted in "indigenous villages" very carefully and minutely reproduced within the exhibition areas. Such public displays - true ethno-anthropological shows in which the exotic actors were supposed to "play" their native daily habits, craftsmanship, arts, dances, songs and religious rites - contributed in an important albeit appalling way to Western Europe self-perception as an advanced, modern and "civilsed" society and culture, to be efficaciously contrasted with primitive or just diverse forms of human ways of living. The expanding, aggressively militarist, imperialist and colonising West could proudly look at itself in the mirror offered by the spectacle of a human alterity exhibited in its most demaning forms; and in that contrast it could find a clear confirmation of the importance of its civilising mission in the world. Several recent books have explored this phenomenon in the social and cultural history of many West-European and American countries: Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Denmark, the United States. This book for the first time investigates the great variety of living human public exhibitions in 19th-20th century Italy, between the liberal era and Fascism. It connects these examples of public exhibitions to an ancient tradition of triumphs and freak shows and underlines the close relationships with colonial politics and ideology, with the development of anthropology and the medical sciences as academic disciplines in Italy and with catholic missionary activities in Africa, the Near East and South America. In so doing this book suggests the need to enlarge the very notion of "human zoos", which aptly defines a particularly brutal, even if very common form of living human exhibition, but which cannot be applied to other, themselves very widespread aspects of human shows, such as ethnic theatre, missionary exhibitions and colonial-imperial exhibitions based not so much on the public show of a degraded savagery, but on the apology of the civilising capacity of colonial and imperial institutions. In so doing, this book offers an original insight into Italian public opinion and sensibilities in matters of human varieties, race, civilization, globalization, modernity and the non-European world; and it tries to assess, in comparison with other European cases, the specifities of Italian attitudes toward human ethnic diversities and colonialism.
