In 1995 the United Nations commemorated its 50th anniversary at a time when the prestige and credibility of this organisation is at its nadir, because of its seemingly lacksidasical attitude over Somalia, Bosnia, and Rwanda. The UN was virtually paralysed by these conflicts, revealing among other things, its structural inadequacies. This is a far cry from the widespread sanguine assessment on the UN voiced just before the end of Cold War and immediately after it. (Mil Technol/SWP)
