The Lebanese Tangle
In: International journal on world peace, Band 6, Heft 2, S. 33-43
ISSN: 0742-3640
A discussion & analysis of Lebanon's unique system of government, its weaknesses, & its final collapse. The thesis presented is that the Lebanese formula, which assigns political posts to each religious sect, & on which the loyalty & stability of the state rests, should be improved, not removed, as a first step toward meaningful conflict resolution. In Comment, Mikhail Agursky (Hebrew U of Jerusalem, Mount Scopus, Israel) addresses the role of religion in national & international relations, extending the analysis beyond Lebanon. In Rejoinder, Abraham & Majid describe shifts in the balance of religious power in Lebanon from the 1970s to the 1980s, focusing on the Shi'ite movement, & make recommendations for foreign policy.
