RESUMEN: En nuestra contribución analizaremos la génesis y posterior desarrollo, en el marco de las controversias doctrinales de los siglos V y VI, de una institución eclesiástica especifica de la iglesia de Constantinopla, el sínodo ἐνδημοῦςα, inicialmente una reunión de obispos subordinada al azar de los encuentros, luego un concilio permanente formado por los obispos presentes en la capital de la Pars Orientis del Imperio (del que los mismos obispos a menudo se servían como instrumento para dirimir conflictos de tipo teológico o jurisdiccional), y finalmente una institución de la Iglesia Imperial. Utilizando una serie de fuentes hasta ahora no tomadas en consideración por los estudiosos que se han dedicado al tema, y a la luz de las más recientes contribuciones sobre el episcopado tardoantiguo, analizaremos su utilización político-eclesiástica por parte del poder imperial y de la jerarquía religiosa en los enfrentamientos entre los titulares de las principales sedes supra-metropolitanas del Oriente y con los poderes laicos. ; ABSTRACT: In the present paper, we will analyze the origin and subsequent development of a specific ecclesiastical institution of the church of Constantinople, the ἐνδημοῦςα Synod, within the framework of the doctrinal controversies of the 5th and 6th centuries. At first it was a random meeting of bishops, later to become a permanent council formed by the bishops present in the capital of the Pars Orientis of the Empire, which was often used as an instrument to settle conflicts of a theological or jurisdictional nature, and finally, an institution of the Imperial Church. Using a series of sources not yet taken into consideration by the scholars and in light of the most recent contributions on the Late Antique episcopate, we will study its political-ecclesiastical deployment by the imperial power and the religious hierarchy on the confrontations between the holders of the main supra-metropolitan seats of the East and the secular powers.

RIASSUNTO: Nella loro messa in scena, gli omina Imperii, in particolare quelli strettamente vincolati alle simbologie della regalità, per la loro fertile tradizione nelle società orientali e occidentali, incarnano con grande efficacia l'enorme versatilità semantica del potere quando esso si associa alle manifestazioni del soprannaturale. La letteratura classica rivela come i mirabilia - siano essi mira o noxia, vera o falsa - appaiano frequentemente relazionati con individui che svolgono un ruolo politico rilevante, e come la propaganda del potere li usi come sequenze privilegiate rispetto ad altre forme o mezzi di consenso. Nel nostro articolo analizziamo la simbologia dell'Oriente tra paganesimo e cristianesimo, soffermando la nostra attenzione nel caso dell'imperatore Tito Flavio Vespasiano. ; ABSTRACT: In their staging, the omina Imperii, especially those closely linked to the symbologies of royalty, due to their fruitful tradition in Eastern and Western societies, embody with great effectiveness the enormous semantic polyvalence of power when it comes into connection with the manifestations of the supernatural. Classical literature reveals how mirabilia - whether mira or noxia, vera or falsa - are often related to individuals who play a relevant political role and how power propaganda uses them as privileged sequences over other forms or means of consensus. In our article, we analyze the symbolism of the East between paganism and Christianity, paying especial attention to the case of the emperor Titus Flavius Vespasianus.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the political status of the late-antique in the Pars Orientis of the Imperium. Usually studied as a reflection of the ideal representation given by the Patristic sources, the officium episcopalis emerges from the Acta of the Councils through the realistic features of a public identity, moulded by bureaucratic and administrative experience. Converted into the most important official in many cities of the East Roman Empire, due to his economical strength and privileges, and to activities not compatible with a correct exercise of his pastoral and sacerdotal ministry, the bishop enjoyed a strategic role and an unlimited leadership: this was the case of Dioscorus, bishop of Alexandria in the second half of the fifth century. ; En esta contribución nos proponemos analizar la fisonomía política de las jerarquías eclesiásticas tardo-antiguas en la Pars Orientis del Imperio. Habitualmente estudiado en el reflejo de la representación ideal proporcionada por las fuentes patrísticas, el obispo se dibuja en las Actas Conciliares como una autoridad que, en virtud de experiencias burocrático-administrativas y de privilegios económicos, trasciende los confines de la esfera religiosa, implicándose en actividades no compatibles con un correcto ejercicio del ministerio sacerdotal y pastoral, a veces en manifiesta violación de las leyes civiles y eclesiásticas. Prepotente personificación de abusos de poder en el ejercicio del officium episcopal es Dióscuro, obispo de Alejandría en la segunda mitad del siglo V.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the political status of the late-antique in the Pars Orientis of the Imperium. Resumen: En el presente trabajo analizamos el papel asumido por los monjes en los conflictos cristológicos del siglo V en la pars Orientis del Imperio, en particular el protagonismo desempeñado en los concilios de Efeso I, Efeso II y Calcedonia por algunos exponentes significativos del tagma monástico. Hábil mediación política jugada en los ambientes de la corte imperial, en el caso del constantipolitano Eutiques, violenta intervención armada en el caso del sirio Bar Sauma, el poder de los monjes pasó de ser instrumento político al servicio de las jerarquías civiles o eclesiásticas para convertirse en amenaza para la Iglesia imperial que tuvo que proceder a su institucionalización. ; Abstract: The aim of this paper is to analyze the role played by monks in the Christological conflicts during the fifth century in the Pars Orientis of the Roman Empire. In particular we study the protagonism of some relevant exponents of the monastic tagma in the Councils of Ephesus I, Ephesus II and Chalcedon. Suitable political mediation in the Imperial court in the case of Constantipolitan Eutiques, extreme violence in the case of Syrian Bar Sauma, monastic power evolved from political instrument to the service of civil or ecclesiastical hierarchies into a threat to the Imperial Church which was forced to institutionalize it.

Questo nostro contributo si propone di analizzare, nel ventennio che intercorre dalla convocazione del I Concilio di Efeso (431) alla vigilia del Concilio di Calcedonia (451), sullo sfondo del grande conflicto cristologico che turbò profundamente la pars Orientis dell'Impero, l'oscillare dell'atteggiamento e delle decisioni del legislatore romano-cristiano —il pius princeps Teodosio II— in ordine alla repressione della devianza religiosa. L'estrema mutevolezza degli atteggiamenti sovrani determinò, nell'arco del V secolo, una grande discontinuità nella politica religiosa imperiale che ebbe nel II Concilio di Efeso, noto come Latrocinium Ephesinum (449), il momento di maggior tensione. Analizzeremo tre costituzioni antieterodosse emanate da Teodosio II negli anni centrali del V secolo: la constitutio del 435, ultimo provvedimento de fide del Codex Theodosianus (CTH 16,5, 66); la constitutio emanata dall'imperatore nel febbraio del 448 il cui testo oggi reperibile nel titolo primo del primo libro del codice Giustinianeo (C.I. 1,1,3); infine la constitutio emanata da Teodosio II all'indomani Della sinodo del 449 (ACO II,III, 2, 88-89) che ne approvò e difese i risultati dogmatici, ovvero sancendo la piena ortodossia della cristologia monofisita e dichiarando guerra aperta alla 'eterodossia' duofisita.

In this paper we propose a short analysis of the iconographical canon related to Abu Seifein, best known as Saint Mercurius, a military martyr of the III rd. century, focusing specially on the saint's weapons just as this appears in the Western and Eastern iconography. The epithet under with he is known in the Coptic sphere makes reference to the two swords, the human and the divine one, with which he is represented in the act of killing the emperor Julian the Apostate. There are, however, some other iconographical variants, very poor in details as far as the weapons and the stratiotike esthes are concerned, if we face them up to the contemporary military Byzantine treatises. ; En el presente artículo proponemos un breve análisis del canon figurativo relativo a Abu Seifein, más conocido como San Mercurio, un mártir militar del siglo III, haciendo especial hincapié en las armas del santo tal como aparecen en la iconografía oriental y occidental. El epíteto con el que se le conoce en ámbito copto hace referencia a las dos espadas, una humana, la otra divina, con las que es representado en el acto de acabar con la vida de Juliano, el emperador apóstata. Sin embargo, se evidencian otras variantes iconológicas, muy pobres en detalles en lo que se refiere a las armas y a la stratiotike esthes si las comparamos con los tratados militares bizantinos contemporáneos.

Unlike the traditional theories that proposed the location of the Visigothic royal palace in the historic quarter of the modern Toledo and, in particular, in relation to the current Alcazar, the authors propose a location in the so-called Vega Baja, outside the walls of the old – and the new – town, and in close connection with the Roman circus here situated. The authors base this hypothesis on the importance and religious-political significance of the unity palatium-circus in late antique Imperial capitals - theme developed in this same context by G. Vespignani - and on the allusions in the Visigothic councils to the presence of the praetorium and of the major Churches in suburbio and extra urbem. It is hard to understand that - having Toletum a magnificent circus whose ruins are still standing - the Visigoths Kings, especially since Leovigild, who aspired to be the continuation of the Imperium Romanum, setting the capital of the Kingdom in the city, didn't take advantage of the possibilities offered by the circus to reproduce the enormous political symbolism of the palatium-circus. Therefore, the authors propose the archaeological excavations underway in the Vega Baja to be geared both to the finding of the Palace by the ruins of the Roman circus set and to the preservation of these spaces. ; Frente a las teorías tradicionales que proponían la localización del palacio real de los reyes visigodos en el casco histórico de la actual Toledo y, más en concreto, en relación con el actual Alcázar, los autores proponen una ubicación en la denominada Vega Baja, extramuros de la ciudad antigua y de la actual, y en estrecha relación con el Circo romano ubicado en este mismo área, fundamentando su hipótesis en la importancia y significado político religioso que tenía el conjunto palacio-circo en las capitales imperiales tardo-antiguas – tema desarrollado en esta misma sede por G. Vespignani – y las alusiones en los concilios visigóticos a la presencia del praetorium y de las principales iglesias palatinas in suburbio y extra urbem. Resulta difícilmente comprensible que, contando Toletum con un magnífico circo romano cuyas ruinas aún están en pie, al establecer la capitalidad del reino en la ciudad, los reyes visigodos, especialmente a partir de Leovigildo, en cuanto continuadores del Imperium Romanum, no aprovechasen las posibilidades que ofrecía el circo para reproducir el modelo imperial palacio-circo de enorme simbolismo político. Por ello se propone que las excavaciones arqueológicas en curso en la Vega Baja se orienten a la localización del conjunto palaciego junto a las ruinas del circo romano y a la preservación de estos espacios.
