Utopia or Ideology: Karl Mannheim and the Place of Theory
Ackroyd presents a study of Karl Mannheim's thought & attempts to understand his current neglect. It is argued that Mannheim's establishing the plausibility of social constructivism places him as an important figure. Ackroyd discusses the context of Mannheim's work & insight concerning utopias & ideology. It is noted that for Mannheim, utopia is different from ideology in that instead of tying thought & action down, utopia involves a direct dialogue with an existing social order. Utopian thinking is significant, then, because it disrupts the existing order. It is concluded that while Mannheim recognized that in order for anything new to be established, the existing institutional matrix & its ideology must be reconfigured, he ignored this conclusion in much of his mature work.
