In 1882, one of the most famous figures of the Ukrainian nation's nineteenth-century revival, Panteleimon Kulish, published a work entitled 'A Painted Egg for the Ruthenians and the Poles at Easter 1882'. In his work, he called on Poles and Ukrainians to establish dialogue and reconciliation, a prerequisite for which should be a critical rethinking of the well-established historical views of both peoples. To this end, Kulish devoted considerable space to the Cossacks and haidamakas. This article analyses the image of the Cossacks on painted Easter eggs. It also examines the evolution of Kulish's historical views and the circumstances under which they took place, traces how they were manifested in his scientific works and considers the circumstances of the publication of his work. His strong criticism of the Cossacks and haidamakas corresponded to his views on Ukraine's history at that time, although the decision to express it publicly was made for political reasons, to reconcile the Ukrainians with the Poles. To convince readers of his views, Kulish critically reinterpreted sources from the Cossack era and criticised both the Cossacks generally and specific historical figures, as well as some events of the early modern era. Kulish's position was criticised by other representatives of the Ukrainian national movement. The reaction of the Polish political elite and intellectuals also failed to meet his expectations. As a result, disappointed by the ineffectiveness of his political manifesto, the Ukrainian intellectual gave up his efforts to strengthen Polish-Ukrainian dialogue.
After the Bolsheviks had come to power in Ukraine, they faced a number of social problems to be solved. One of them was the significant spread of tuberculosis. To fight the infectious diseases a special information campaign was launched at pages of various periodicals, including a popular-science journal, "Shliakh do zdorovia"("Path to Health"), established by the People's Commissariat for Health in 1925 and subsequently published by the same institution. The journal reflected the official policy in the struggle against tuberculosis. It included visual materials to facilitate the public absorbing information. As such, it became an important tool in the anti-tuberculosis campaign. Simultaneously, like all other periodicals, this journal was an instrument of agitation and propaganda activities of the Bolsheviks. The article depicts the reasons why an active information campaign against tuberculosis was launched. It also clarifies the role which visual materials played in the anti-tuberculosis campaign carried out in "Shliakh do zdorovia" as well as it shows top directions of this campaign alongside with main topics raised by the authors of the articles published in the journal. Finally, it compares the level of educational and propaganda component in each direction and in the information campaign as a whole. The results of the study indicate that within the Bolsheviks' anti-tuberculosis campaign three main directions can be distinguished: 1) explanation, why there were a significant number of people suffering from tuberculosis in the Ukrainian SSR; 2) explanation, why the disease had been spreading further; 3) presentation of the initiatives which Soviet authorities had taken on to overcome tuberculosis. To show specific problems in each of these fields as well as actions raised by Soviet authorities to solve them, visual materials were actively used. Thus, political and ideological components often came to the fore, even though the very problem of tuberculosis was medical.
Alcoholism remained one of the most urgent problems of the Ukrainian SSR in the 1920s. In the article, the author analyses activities of the Bolsheviks aimed to solve these social problems with the help of illustrative materials of medical periodicals. The author found that after the abolition of the "dry law" the Soviet authorities intensified their agitation and propaganda activities, in which doctors were actively involved. Anti-alcohol topics were reflected in a number of illustrations and articles of the popular science magazine "Put' k zdorov'yu" (The Way to Health). In order to counteract the spread of alcoholism, the published illustrations and texts showed a negative influence of alcohol on the body, they exposed existing myths about its positive effects on humans, emphasized the role of drunkenness in the spread of tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases, and demonstrated the negative impact of the latter on children. They also illustrated various types of deviant behavior of people under the influence of alcohol intoxication, as the fate of children of alcoholics, in particular child prostitution, and further - prostitution in general, disorderly conduct and criminality. A special attention was paid to family and financial problems caused by drunkenness, etc. The author finds that on pages of the magazine not only a negative image of the alcohol-addicted people was created, but also ways to overcome this "social disease" were offered. In particular, one promoted activities of the workers' clubs, summer clubs in the gardens, reading-rooms, cinema, theaters, and teahouse; calls for a healthy lifestyle, physical education were made. At the same time, the Soviet government used the anti-alcohol campaign to achieve other political goals, in particular discreditation of the tsarist government, and the pre-revolutionary order at all, and dissemination of the negative image of the "NEP-men", within the framework of the anti-religious campaign.
