The Soviet Gulag has joined the tragic annals of what has been described as "man's inhumanity to man". Yet some prisoners, many of whom were falsely convicted, emerged from the experience maintaining their loyalty to the system of government that was responsible for their imprisonment. The hardship of the camp experience, and the hardship of return, stamped ex-prisoners for life. In camp, they struggled to survive. After camp they struggled to reintegrate, to re-unite, and for Party members, to renew their vows with the Party. This article focusses on Gulag prisoner and returnee accounts that profess enduring faith in the Party and the Communist project. With the materials that have become available, we can now begin to understand this phenomenon. Explanations include: Communism as secular religion, cognitive dissonance, functionalism, and the traumatic bond. As we witness a persistent trend to manage national and public memory by repressing the memory of repression in today's Russia, the issue of enduring loyalty among Gulag returnees may offer some insight into questions related to national memory and the dynamics of repressive regimes. ; El Gulag soviético ha pasado a integrar los anales de lo que se ha descrito como la "inhumanidad del hombre hacia el hombre". Sin embargo, algunos prisioneros y prisioneras, muchos de los cuales habían sido injustamente condenados, emergieron de la experiencia manteniendo su lealtad al sistema de gobierno que había sido el responsable de su encarcelamiento. In Russia, two decades after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Stalin?s
popularity soared in nationwide polls, as many recalled the country?s former
prestige and their previous sense of security. Likewise, many Serbs, who
formed the largest group in former Yugoslavia, look back with nostalgia to a
time of greater national pride and material comfort. By contrast the
dominated ethnic populations in that same nation at that same time were
frustrated in their striving for national pride. Each polity has a story
fashioned by selected and connected events that promote its national
interests. Although the physical battle in former Yugoslavia has ended, the
divisiveness remains, and is perpetuated by competing narratives of what
happened and why. And in Russia, an increasingly emergent ?invisible
Stalinism? has once again given victims of the repression little validation
of their experience. This article offers preliminary observations on the
disjunction of narratives in Russia and Serbia, and seeks to explain one of
the key impediments to coming to terms with the past.

Gegenstand der Untersuchung sind die physischen, psychologischen, sozialen und politischen Probleme im Zusammenhang mit der Entlassung der Opfer des stalinistischen Terrors aus den Arbeitslagern der Sowjetunion. Die Verfasserin stützt sich hierbei auf umfangreiches Archivmaterial sowie auf Quellen der oral history. Ihre Analyse beleuchtet beide Seiten des sich mit der Entlassung und Rehabilitierung der Terroropfer stellenden Integrationsproblems - die Bemühungen und Schwierigkeiten der ehemaligen Gefangenen bei der Wiedereingliederung in die Sowjetgesellschaft ebenso wie die positive oder negative Haltung von Staat und Gesellschaft gegenüber den Entlassenen. Die Verfasserin stellt das Verfahren der Lagerentlassung und Rehabilitierung dar und macht die Vielfalt von Unterschieden und Ungleichbehandlung sichtbar, die für den Rehabilitationsprozess charakteristisch war. Gleichzeitig wird der begrenzte Charakter der Entstalinisierung unter Chruschtschow deutlich. Während die Verbrechen Stalins gebrandmarkt wurden, wurde das Problem der Repression als Element politischer Herrschaft in der Sowjetunion übergangen. Dies findet auch seinen Niederschlag in der Haltung der Sowjetgesellschaft gegenüber den Entlassenen. (BIOst-Wpt)
