The rise of anthropology in Portugal is examined within the framework of several cycles of development. The chapter discusses how the consolidation of anthropology at university level was the main focus until the 90–s. Applied anthropology, as distinctive from academic anthropology received very little attention. Consequently, there was an absence of an institutionalization of applied anthropology in the country. Nowadays, however, two main trends converge that supports the growth of applied anthropology and is providing work for anthropologists outside academia. First, anthropology departments in Portugal have stabilized their staff quotas resulting in very few positions open for anthropologists at the university level. Second, global changes are impacting the social framework of the country and, consequently, opening up new horizons of research and practice for social scientists. Several examples of these opportunities are discussed which is creating an optimism about the various niches for new and relevant anthropological practices.

Although an understanding of nature of science is a core element in scientific literacy, there is considerable evidence that school and university students hold naïve conceptions about it. It is argued that, whilst the failure to learn about nature of science arises from its neglect in formal science education, a major reason is the adherence to the precepts of pseudo-science, a set of beliefs that have wide cultural currency in the general population. University science and non-science students were interviewed about their beliefs in and explanations for 'water dowsing', a pseudo-scientific approach to finding groundwater. The demarcation criteria between science and pseudo-science and students' research designs into 'water dowsing' were also enquired into. The results show that many students believed in the working efficacy of water dowsing and stated pseudo-scientific explanations for it. Furthermore, they were unaware of the demarcation criteria between science and pseudo-science, and designed naïve research studies to enquire into 'water dowsing'.

This investigation relates to the professional development of in-service teachers on online teaching in K-12/P-12 schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. The main questions concerned the autonomy and support from/in schools, alternatives found and implemented. A model was developed and applied in different institutions. This article will focus on analysing the results of one Portuguese school. The study follows a Design-Based-Research methodology. The results revealed teachers have knowledge gaps regarding intermediate/advanced digital skills. Through the training course, teachers' awareness was raised about the distinction between Remote Education and Distance Learning and some skills inherent to online teaching were developed.

The purpose of this paper is to advance the knowledge on side-selling. The case study of the paprika supply chain in Central Malawi showed that 36.9% of small-scale farmers engaged in side-selling. It was projected that the focal company lost between 19.9% to 44.6% of paprika due to side-selling. The main reason for side-selling was the higher price offered by local vendors. Binary logit regression indicated that the geographical location, education and income levels, distance to the collection point, a negative impact of contracting on livelihoods, membership in farmers' association and assistance from the Government significantly influenced small-scale farmers' side-selling.
