Environmental degradation is emerging as a major policy concern in Kenya; the first casualties of it are women whose tasks involve them in continous interaction with natural resources. This book argues that women play an important role as environmental managers, for example in food production and conservation of soil, water, forests and wildlife. Their involvement, however, has not been adequately reflected in legislation, policies and programmes dealing with environment and development. The authors stress that efforts to achieve sustainable development are not likely to succeed unless they take into account this factor. (DÜI-Hff)

Climatic change will have far-reaching impacts on existing and future development projects in the Third World by affecting the bio-productive systems on which most economic investments are based. Analysis of 86 years of climate data shows clear trends of increasing atmospheric temperatures in Kenya since the mid-1960s. This book describes the anticipated effects of climatic change on agricultural production, infrastructure development, energy and water supply and tourism in Kenya. It highlights the need to re-orient investment policies and strategies to take into account diminishing productive resources. Shifts in agro-ecological zones and changes in geophysical resources, such as increased erosion rates, must be taken into account in current development planning. (DÜI-Hff)

This book provides a profile of problems and prospects of trade interaction in Africa. Critical analyses are made of a number of regional groupings such as PTA, SADCC, SACU, and ECOWAS by way of seeking to identify their strengths and weaknesses. The authors then turn to examining specific policy instruments in the enhancement of regional integration and co-operation such as trade payment arrangements, duty drawbacks, export subsidies, and counter-trade.
