10 pags., 7 figs., 2 tabs., 2 apps. ; The impact of the photodissociation of HCN and HNC isomers is analyzed in different astrophysical environments. For this purpose, the individual photodissociation cross sections of HCN and HNC isomers have been calculated in the 7-13.6 eV photon energy range for a temperature of 10 K. These calculations are based on the ab initio calculation of three-dimensional adiabatic potential energy surfaces of the 21 lower electronic states. The cross sections are then obtained using a quantum wave packet calculation of the rotational transitions needed to simulate a rotational temperature of 10 K. The cross section calculated for HCN shows significant differences with respect to the experimental one, and this is attributed to the need to consider non-adiabatic transitions. Ratios between the photodissociation rates of HCN and HNC under different ultraviolet radiation fields have been computed by renormalizing the rates to the experimental value. It is found that HNC is photodissociated faster than HCN by a factor of 2.2 for the local interstellar radiation field and 9.2 for the solar radiation field, at 1 au. We conclude that to properly describe the HNC/HCN abundance ratio in astronomical environments illuminated by an intense ultraviolet radiation field, it is necessary to use different photodissociation rates for each of the two isomers, which are obtained by integrating the product of the photodissociation cross sections and ultraviolet radiation field over the relevant wavelength range. ; The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Research Council under the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme (FP/2007-2013)/ERC Grant Agreement no. 610256 (NANOCOSMOS). 51 pags., 35 figs., 1 tab., 5 apps. ; The atmospheres of synchronously rotating exoplanets are intrinsically 3D, and fast vertical and horizontal winds are expected to mix the atmosphere, driving the chemical composition out of equilibrium. Due to the longer computation times associated with multidimensional forward models, horizontal mixing has only been investigated for a few case studies. In this paper, we aim to generalize the impact of horizontal and vertical mixing on the chemistry of exoplanet atmospheres over a large parameter space. We do this by applying a sequence of post-processed forward models for a large grid of synchronously rotating gaseous exoplanets, where we vary the effective temperature (between 400 and 2600 K), surface gravity, and rotation rate. We find that there is a dichotomy in the horizontal homogeneity of the chemical abundances. Planets with effective temperatures below 1400 K tend to have horizontally homogeneous, vertically quenched chemical compositions, while planets hotter than 1400 K exhibit large compositional day-night differences for molecules such as CH4. Furthermore, we find that the planet's rotation rate impacts the planetary climate, and thus also the molecular abundances and transmission spectrum. By employing a hierarchical modelling approach, we assess the relative importance of disequilibrium chemistry on the exoplanet transmission spectrum, and conclude that the temperature has the most profound impact. Temperature differences are also the main cause of limb asymmetries, which we estimate could be observable with the James Webb Space Telescope. 12 pag.s., 11 figs., 3 tabs. -- This article replaces the version published on 8th September 2017, to provide an updated citation for ref. 19. ; A new method is proposed to analytically represent the potential energy surface of reactions involving polyatomic molecules capable of accurately describing long-range interactions and saddle points, needed to describe low-temperature collisions. It is based on two terms, a reactive force field term and a many-body term. The reactive force field term accurately describes the fragments, long-range interactions among them and the saddle points for reactions. The many-body term increases the desired accuracy everywhere else. This method has been applied to the OH + HCO → HO + HCO reaction, giving a barrier of 27.4 meV. The simulated classical rate constants with this potential are in good agreement with recent experimental results [Ocaña et al., Astrophys. J., 2017, submitted], showing an important increase at temperatures below 100 K. We investigate the structure, dynamics, and chemistry of the molecule-rich nebula around the stellar symbiotic system R Aqr, which is significantly affected by the presence of a white dwarf (WD) companion. We study the effects of the strong dynamical interaction between the AGB wind and the WD and of photodissociation by the WD UV radiation on the circumstellar shells. Methods. We obtained high-quality ALMA maps of the 12CO J = 2-1, J = 3-2, and J = 6-5 lines and of 13CO J = 3-2. The maps were analyzed by means of a heuristic 3D model that is able to reproduce the observations. In order to interpret this description of the molecule-rich nebula, we performed sophisticated calculations of hydrodynamical interaction and photoinduced chemistry. Results. We find that the CO-emitting gas is distributed within a relatively small region ≲ 1.″5. Its structure consists of a central dense component plus strongly disrupted outer regions, which seem to be parts of spiral arms that are highly focused on the orbital plane. The structure and dynamics of these spiral arms are compatible with our hydrodynamical calculations. We argue that the observed nebula is the result of the dynamical interaction between the wind and the gravitational attraction of the WD. We also find that UV emission from the hot companion efficiently photodissociates molecules except in the densest and best-shielded regions, that is, in the close surroundings of the AGB star and some shreds of the spiral arms from which the detected lines come. 5 pags., 3 figs. ; AB Aur is a Herbig Ae star hosting a well-known transitional disk. Because of its proximity and low inclination angle, it is an excellent object to study planet formation. Our goal is to investigate the chemistry and dynamics of the molecular gas component in the AB Aur disk, and its relation with the prominent horseshoe shape observed in continuum mm emission. We used the Northern Extended Milimeter Array interferometer to map with high angular resolution the J = 3-2 lines of HCO and HCN. By combining both, we can gain insight into the AB Aur disk structure. Chemical segregation is observed in the AB Aur disk: HCO shows intense emission toward the star position, at least one bright molecular bridge within the dust cavity, and ring-like emission at larger radii, while HCN is only detected in an annular ring that is coincident with the dust ring and presents an intense peak close to the dust trap. We use HCO to investigate the gas dynamics inside the cavity. The observed bright HCO bridge connects the compact central source with the outer dusty ring. 10 pags., 8 figs., 1 tab., 1 app. ; We aim to study the properties of a particular type of evolved stars, C-rich evolved stars with high expansion velocities. For this purpose we have focused on the two best studied objects within this group, IRC+10401 and AFGL 2233. We focused on determining their luminosity by studying their spectral energy distribution. Also, we have obtained single-dish line profiles and interferometric maps of the CO J = 1-0 and J = 2-1 emission lines for both objects. We have modeled this emission using a LVG radiative transfer code to determine the kinetic temperature and density profiles of the gas ejected by these stars. We have found that the luminosities obtained for these objects (log(L/L ) = 4.1 and 5.4) locate them in the domain of the massive asymptotic giant branch stars (AGBs) and the red supergiant stars (RSGs). In addition, the mass-loss rates obtained (1.5 × 10-6 ×10 M yr) suggest that while IRC+10401 might be an AGB star, AFGL 2233 could be an RSG star. All these results, together with those from previous works, suggest that both objects are massive objects, IRC+10401 a massive evolved star with M ∼ 5-9 M which could correspond to an AGB or an RSG and AFGL 2233 an RSG with M ∼ 20 M , which would confirm the existence of massive C-rich evolved stars. Two scenarios are proposed to form these types of objects. 24 pags., 11 figs., 2 tabs. ; High spectral resolution observations toward the low mass-loss rate C-rich, J-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star Y CVn were carried out at 7.5, 13.1, and 14.0 μm with the Echelon-cross-echelle Spectrograph mounted on the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy and the Texas Echelon-cross-echelle Spectrograph on the Infrared Telescope Facility. Around 130 HCN and H13CN lines of bands ν2, 2ν2, 2ν2 - ν2, 3ν2 - 2ν2, 3ν2 - ν2, and 4ν2 - 2ν2 were identified involving lower levels with energies up to ? 3900 K. These lines were complemented with the pure rotational lines J = 1-0 and 3-2 of the vibrational states up to 2ν2 acquired with the Institut de Radioastronomie Millimétrique 30 m telescope, and with the continuum taken with Infrared Space Observatory. We analyzed the data in detail by means of a ro-vibrational diagram and with a code written to model the absorption and emission of the circumstellar envelope of an AGB star. The continuum is mostly produced by the star with a small contribution from dust grains comprising warm to hot SiC and cold amorphous carbon. The HCN abundance distribution seems to be anisotropic close to Y CVn and in the outer layers of its envelope. The ejected gas is accelerated up to the terminal velocity (? 8 km s-1) from the photosphere to ? 3R? , but there is evidence of higher velocities (? 9-10 km s-1) beyond this region. In the vicinity of the star, the line widths are as high as ? 10 km s-1, which implies a maximum turbulent velocity of 6 km s-1 or the existence of other physical mechanisms probably related to matter ejection that involve higher gas expansion velocities than expected. HCN is rotationally and vibrationally out of local thermodynamic equilibrium throughout the whole envelope. It is surprising that a difference of about 1500 K in the rotational temperature at the photosphere is needed to explain the observations at 7.5 and 13-14 μm. Our analysis finds a total HCN column density that ranges from ? 2.1 × 1018 to 3.5 × 1018 cm-2, an abundance with respect to H2 of 3.5 × 10-5 to 1.3 × 10-4, and a 12C/13C isotopic ratio of ? 2.5 throughout the whole envelope. ; The research leading to these results has received funding support from the European Research Council under the European Union's Seventh Framework Program (FP/2007-2013) / ERC Grant Agreement n. 610256 NANOCOSMOS. Tanarro et al. -- 16 pags., 18 figs., app. ; We present a proof of concept on the coupling of radio astronomical receivers and spectrometers with chemical reactors and the performances of the resulting setup for spectroscopy and chemical simulations in laboratory astrophysics. Several experiments including cold plasma generation and UV photochemistry were performed in a 40 cm long gas cell placed in the beam path of the Aries 40 m radio telescope receivers operating in the 41–49 GHz frequency range interfaced with fast Fourier transform spectrometers providing 2 GHz bandwidth and 38 kHz resolution. The impedance matching of the cell windows has been studied using di erent materials. The choice of the material and its thickness was critical to obtain a sensitivity identical to that of standard radio astronomical observations. Spectroscopic signals arising from very low partial pressures of CH3OH, CH3CH2OH, HCOOH, OCS, CS, SO2 (<103 mbar) were detected in a few seconds. Fast data acquisition was achieved allowing for kinetic measurements in fragmentation experiments using electron impact or UV irradiation.
