AbstractThis paper investigates the evolution of regional performance in providing employment for disabled people according to Law 68/1999 and the convergence process among Italian regions by stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) and local Moran transition probability matrix. The results show that the Central and Northern Italy regions are more efficient in the matching process between supply and demand for the employment of disabled people than Southern Italy regions. In addition, we observe the absence of intra‐distribution mobility and the persistence of regional dualism (polarization), in terms of employed disabled people, among Italian regions.

The aim of this paper is to examine the earnings dynamic in Italy, in order
to explain earnings differences between southern Italy and centralnorthern
Italy. In our analysis we use different techniques: ordinary least squares
(OLS), quantile regression models and the algorithm developed by Machado and
Mata (2005). In particular, the Machado and Mata (2005) algorithm allows us
to examine the relative importance of both differences in workers?
characteristics and in their returns in explaining southern, central and
northern Italy earnings differences at a point in time, as well as across
time within each macro-area. We focus on the role of differences in
educational endowment and returns to education, one of the most important
components of human capital in the stylised literature. The level of
education determines the substantial disparities in terms of wage returns.
However, this holds only for levels of education related to compulsory
education.

Abstract
Italy features very low labour market participation rates for both men and women, coupled with a sizeable participation gender gap. This work investigates empirically the relation between institutional quality and labour market participation at the local level. Using official records on the Italian provinces over the 2004–2012 timespan and the Institutional Quality Index, we use a Spatial Lag of X model to gauge the direct and indirect impact of local institutions on male and female participation rates, with particular regard to the participation gender gap. The results support the idea that institutional quality has a significant impact on local labour market participation, for both men and women, while it does not affect the participation gap. Moreover, institutions generate spatial spillovers, affecting participation in neighbouring provinces. Finally, the availability of public child care facilities is as a key determinant of female participation.

AbstractRecent years have witnessed a growing aversion to immigration worldwide and, at the same time, radicalization of public opinion on the issue. This paper explores the relationship between media news and individual attitudes to immigration. We run an empirical analysis whereby an index capturing individuals' pro-immigration attitude, measured in 19 countries, is regressed over indexes capturing the coverage and tone of media news about immigration. We find that pro-immigration attitudes are negatively correlated with media coverage and the negative tone of news. However, this correlation is significant only for those with high trust in the media. In the case of low trust, higher coverage of immigration and a negative news slant make previous preferences and beliefsvis-à-visimmigration more extreme, yielding a lower pro-immigration index for those politically on the right, while the opposite applies to those on the left. The pro-immigration index is constructed by means of fuzzy methods to account for the many aspects defining attitudes to immigration.
