Economists today have turned more to professionalism & technique rather than to answering the central question of economic order. The question of economic order was well articulated by T. Hobbes who saw men as selfish, passionate & aggressive, not always able to share the same scarce resources, & thereby becoming enemies. D. Hume is preferred in his resolution of the problem of economic order. Hume felt that to achieve a healthy economy, members of the community had to have the incentive of bettering themselves if they were to follow the socially accepted guidelines. Hume did not clearly specify if this economic atmosphere had to include a social consciousness of good & evil, or if there should be a belief in a higher order being than man. These 2 18th century philosophers have done far better at asking & answering questions about the economic forces behind man than modern economists. Modified HA.
