'Socialism' names a form of collective life that has never been fully realized; consequently, it is best understood as a goal to be imagined. This study locates an aesthetic impulse that animates some of the most consequential socialist writing, thought, and practice of the long nineteenth century. This volume explores this tradition of radical activism, investigating the diverse ways that British socialists - from Robert Owen to the mid-century Christian Socialists to William Morris - marshalled the resources of the aesthetic in their efforts to surmount 'politics' and develop non-governmental forms of collective life.

ABSTRACT
Is a utopian text best understood as a blueprint for building a better society or as a catalyst for educating the desire of its readers? Since Miguel Abensour's interpretation of News from Nowhere, scholars have favored the latter view. This article contends, however, that the "catalytic" approach to utopian texts created an antinomy within utopian studies. When William Morris composed Nowhere, he was confronting a practical manifestation of the same antinomy. Consequently, studying Morris's utopia sheds valuable light on this methodological problem. This focus also reveals Nowhere's governing metaphor—the bridge—and suggests the significance of Morris's neglected contemporaneous lecture "How Shall We Live Then?" This article concludes that attention to the programmatic and rhetorical content of utopian texts is necessary to balance the dominant emphasis on utopia as an impulse and pedagogical process.

Education plays a pivotal role in establishing the elite status of a profession. This paper sets out to understand the role of social and political influences in the determination of entry routes to professional accounting training with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS). The paper charts the development of various entry routes which converted ICAS from an Institute with few graduate entrants in the mid-1950s to an Institute with almost 100% graduate entrants today.
