Portuguese Volunteer Firefighters in the Context of the Challenges Posed by the COVID-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic is producing not only epidemiological consequences on a global scale, but also political, economic, and social repercussions. The health care professionals that have been on the front lines fighting the pandemic need the support and assistance of other organizations to meet the many daily challenges. Volunteer firefighters stand out for their outreach approach and implementation of the Human2Human paradigm that has enabled them to meet the needs of the most vulnerable population that have been hit the hardest by the pandemic. This study adopts an ethnographic-action method considering Portuguese volunteer firefighters to explore the characteristics and relevance of these initiatives in areas such as combating isolation, medical assistance, containing the spread of COVID-19, and promoting public–private partnerships. The findings reveal that factors associated with altruism are central elements in the emergence of these initiatives, although some locally or nationally coordinated initiatives have been replicated in other contexts. It is also noteworthy that volunteer firefighters also present initiatives that can be fit into more than one category.

Políticas públicas e comunidades da Amazônia: o caso da Velha Marabá (1970-2000)
In: Urbana: revista eletrônica do Centro Interdisciplinar de Estudos sobre a Cidade, Band 8, Heft 2, S. 44
ISSN: 1982-0569

; This article is concerned with some issues, proposals and impasses that, in recent years, the idea and practice of "European literature" has led us to. Although this endeavor does not overlap, nor does it have to, with that of the European Union, neither is it completely aloof from the challenges of building and consolidating a consciousness of plural unity. These proposals at once confirm the ineffectiveness, or even the logical and practical impossibility of thinking about literary Europe through a simple summation of the literatures of European nations and their histories, and, on the other hand, they show us how literary Europe works as a sample of sensible intelligence of the coordination of differences or individualities.

; This paper aims to provide an eminently representational reading of the state and destiny of Europe in two texts which claim to be lyric, even elegiac, and which provide a poetic and political reflection on the evolution of our continent at a very specific moment marked by the disintegration of the European institutional project, the rise of new facets of nationalism and identity insecurity. In these two texts, one of which has been brought to the stage, it is a simultaneously complex and lucid portrait of Europe that is painted.

Com efeito, ambos os textos se afiguram "impressões de viagem" através do olhar de narradores-personagens globetrotters ; The aim will be to provide a representational and political reading of the southern European continent, perceived from two generically different narratives such as the graphic novel by Swedish author Fabian Göranson, A Dream of Europe (2018), and the short narrative of French writer Emmanuel Ruben's trip to the Balkans, symptomatically titled The Heart of Europe (2018). In both cases, we are dealing with recent rediscovery of the south of Europe in the light of historical events and societal changes arising from both the conflicts caused by the implosion of Yugoslavia and the sovereign debt crisis of southern European countries between 2010 and 2015. In fact, these two texts turn out to be "travel impressions" through the eyes of globetrotters-narrators.

In: https://repositorio-aberto.up.pt/handle/10216/104304
; This paper is about the case study of the teaching and learning of foreign languages in Southern Europe countries - in this very case Portugal, specifically at the Oporto University - which officially acknowledged and applied in its programs, objectives and methodologies guidelines and standards defined by the two guiding documents of the European integrative and inclusive policy, namely the processes arising from the Bologna Declaration (1999) and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (2001).We intend to characterise the first decade of articulation of both these documents in the teaching and learning of foreign languages at the FLUP (English, French, Spanish, German and Portuguese Foreign Language) : balance, innovative and positive progresses, but also the resistance and reluctance to face various principles and spirit of both these documents for the teaching of languages and cultures.
