The measuring instruments are developed for many different purposes and directions, being held by
generic scales of health status and specific scales to a given situation. This study aimed to discuss
the important issues that permeate the use of measuring instruments and provide a systematic way
of indicators and measuring instruments used in QL and validated in Brazil. It was conducted a
study of narrative review of available knowledge in the literature, consultation with the following
databases: DEDALUS, LILACS, MEDLINE and Scielo, based on the periods of 1995-2008. It was
observed that the instruments that were raised are more suitable for application in the Brazilian
population, with good internal consistency, validity and test-retest reliability. It was conclude that
despite national and internationally agreed instruments, are still scope to better ensure their
psychometric properties, better form of administration and the possible interference inter-examiner.

The promotion of quality of work life programs has become the way it is possible to
develop and maintain motivation and commitment of workers, resulting in numerous
benefits. Currently, many companies havesought to incorporate standardized
programs Quality of Work Life (QWL) immediately, without strategic planning and
proper investment. This causes them to obtain results contrary to those expected.
Each program must have a direction, since each company has its specificity. Thus, it
should be a diagnosis of problems and limitations of occupational activities, as well
as the physical and human resources, it canforward the planning and execution of
actions to be implemented. This study aimed to present suggestions of actions and
promotional programs for QWL to be used asa model, aiming to worker health and
gain business. Was conducted a bibliographic research by consulting the following
databases: DEDALUS, LILACS, MEDLINE and SciELO, based on the periods of
1995-2008. It is concluded that there is much to do. Should then reduce the gap
between rhetoric and practice, so that the QWL is not just another fad and will not
disappear before the first difficulty to be faced.

Current research synthesizes epidemiological data on morbo-mortality by labor accidents in the Brazilian population and gives a cross-section of these accidents in Brazil between 2004 and 2007. Current descriptive and exploratory analysis uses databases of the Public Health Ministry on labor accidents. In fact, 465.700 and 653.090 laboraccidents were notified respectively in 2004 and 2007, with a trend towardsan increase in number. The state of Santa Catarina was the area in which most accidents occurred, with an average of 577.3 accidents per 100.000 workers. Increase in labor accidents involving female remained constant, when statistics of past surveys are compared. Regardless of gender, most accidents occurred with workers within the 20-39 year bracket. Typical accidents are higher than cases with 83.8% of labor accidents in Brazil. When sectors of economicactivities are taken into consideration, accidents were preponderant in Services (50.1%), followed by the Transformation sector (36.4%). Accidents resulting in temporary incapacity for work reached 32.8%, whilst 2,800 workers died annually from labor accidents. Data show an urgent need for the permanent broadcasting of the above data so that public and private organizations involved in occupational health should take severe measures on the issue.

This is a retrospective descriptive study, which aimed
at knowing the characteristics of traffic accidents by motor vehicles
in Maringá between 2005 and 2008. For the study, run over victims
of traffic accidents in Maringá from 2005 to 2008 were considered,
using data from the firefighter's list of occurrences - 5th Fire Combat
Team. 1841 victims were identified. From the total number of victims,
the number of incidents recorded (1486) was studied: 399 happened in
2005, 376 in 2006, 361 in 2007 and 350 in 2008. It was noted a decreas-ing trend in incidence over the years. A predominance of male victims
in the age range 15 to 24 was noticed. In the years of the study, the ac-cidents occurred mostly between May and July, early in the afternoon
and evening (6pm to 8:59pm). These results confirm those observed in
other studies, highlighting the need to implement preventive measures
through intersectoral action and contribution of other studies using
other methods and other information sources.

The measurement of Quality of Life at Work (QLW) has been emerging in the scientific
community as an important tool for investigating and evaluating the occupational health of individuals in a holistic manner. The measurement instruments are developed
for many different purposes and directions, being held by generic scales of health
status and specific scales to a given situation. The objective of this study is to discuss
important aspects related to QLW and present in a systematic concept, indicators and
measurement instruments used and validated in Brazil. Was conducted a study of
narrative review of available knowledge in the literature, consultation with the
following databases: DEDALUS, LILACS, MEDLINE and Scielo, based on the
periods of 1995-2008. It was conclude that in spiteof being instruments recognized
nationally and internationally, therefore further studies of application are not
needed to ensure better their psychometric properties, applicability, better
management and the possible interference inter-examiner.

Maternal mortality attracts a lot of discussion and concern in Paraná seen that reflects
the quality of care in health services, as well as the operation of public policies for
women"s health. The aim of this study was to understand the epidemiology of maternal
mortality in the State of Paraná, through review of studies on the subject. It is a
systematic literature review conducted by electronic search of scientific articles
published between 2000 and 2010 in the databases LILACS and SciELO. Initially, it
was identified 30 articles. After application of inclusion and exclusion criteria left 09
articles. The comparison of the data showed a decrease of MMR in the State. Prevailed
direct obstetric causes, with a prevalence of hypertensive diseases. It was concluded that
despite its importance, few articles on maternal mortality in the State of Paraná. The
MMR, although declining, remains at high levels. Such data are necessary to have a
view of the epidemiological situation. They can identify problems and/or failures and
allow for formulating interventionist proposals and order to reduce maternal mortality
rates. More effective actions to reduce preventable maternal deaths in the State are still
indispensable.
