The datasets were created for a cross-national comparison of gigwork platform models in two sectors, ridehailing and food delivery and covers the two to four dominant platforms in these two sectors in 30 European countries (all EU member states, UK, Norway and Switzerland), the United States of America and Canada. The datasets contain factual information about these cases, collected via desk research and surveys during 2022 and stored in online questionnaires. The adjusted initial dataset (AID) contains the combined data from all of these online questionnaires. A formal case in the AID represents one completed online questionnaire containing data about one conceptual case, i.e. a platform, collected by one respondent. For analysis, data from the AID was collated into the final dataset (FD) where each formal case corresponds to a conceptual case, i.e. a platform. The FD contains factual information about the organization operating the platform, formal working conditions and other conditions for platform use.
The datasets were generated in the quantitative sub-project of the project "Does the Macro-level matter? A comparative analysis of institutional frameworks and gigwork platforms across EU-28 countries" (DFG project number 442171088). The project was part of the first phase of DGF priority program "The digitalization of working worlds" (SPP 2267, DFG project number 422743478).

In diesem Open-Access-Buch stehen Software und ihre Rolle für das Soziale im Mittelpunkt. Die Arbeit stellt Grundprobleme und Lösungsansätze einer Soziologie der Software vor und skizziert damit eine soziologische Perspektive auf einen Forschungsgegenstand, der für das Verständnis digitalisierter Gesellschaften zentral ist. Dafür werden organisations- und techniksoziologische Forschungsergebnisse zum Thema Software mit Erkenntnissen aus den Science and Technology Studies und der Forschung zu Computer Supported Cooperative Work zusammengeführt. Die Autorin entwickelt auf dieser Basis einen Forschungsrahmen, in dem Software gleichzeitig als Werkzeug für und als Resultat von Versuchen betrachtet wird, Kontrolle über das Soziale und seine Unsicherheiten auszuüben. Anhand einer Fallstudie zum Einsatz der weit verbreiteten Standardsoftware SAP für die Planung von Operationen wird vorgeführt, wie Software die Machtspiele in Organisationen beeinflusst und von Einzelnen strategisch genutzt wird, um individuelle Ziele zu erreichen. Es zeigt sich, dass Software ein Machtinstrument ist, das nicht nur von der Organisationsleitung, sondern auch gegen sie eingesetzt werden kann. Dabei wird verständlich, warum Software in Organisationen selten nur das verändert, was bei ihrer Einführung beabsichtigt war. Die Autorin Dzifa Ametowobla ist Informatikerin und Soziologin. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Organisationssoziologie und soziologische Digitalisierungsforschung. Sie arbeitet als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Soziologie der Technischen Universität Berlin.

This article sheds light on the organizational dimensions of infrastructures of sustainability. We employ the case of energy cooperatives, which co-shape the new decentralized infrastructure for the supply of renewable energy, to illustrate the relevance of the organizational dimension. From a perspective of the sociology of organizations, we argue in the first part of the article that energy cooperatives advance radical imaginaries and innovative practices of sustainability because they are "unconventional organizations" characterized by participatory structures. Their participatory makeup integrates different social groups and concerns in their decision-making processes and enables them to combine economic, social, and ecological aims. Given that participatory arrangements are often associated with small organizational size but need to be scalable, the second part of the article explores how energy cooperatives can extend their sustainable practices, thereby strengthening their role as infrastructures of sustainability. We identify organizational networks, digital platforms, and symbolic influence as organizational ways to expand the sustainability imaginaries of cooperatives.

"During the past decades, innovation research has yielded countless empirical studies in a variety of disciplines. For all this quantity, we still lack an adequate understanding of basic qualities and mechanisms of its central subject. Which processes and conditions bring innovation about? How does it spread? And what is its genuine nature? Critics argue that these shortcomings have their roots in the conceptual limitations of established perspectives on innovation and in the fact that researchers confine themselves to studying technical and scientific novelties or marketable products. This self-restriction stands in marked contrast to the observation that innovation plays an important role in contemporary societies. The term is at least ubiquitous and its usage common in all societal fields. In the introduction to this HSR Special Issue, we subscribe to this critique and argue that the conceptual reductionism comes along with severe methodical and methodological limitations. These become manifest in a joint dominance of quantitative indicator-based research and ethnographic single case studies. Thus, researchers of innovation disregard a variety of possible data types and forms of analysis and rarely apply complex designs. It is also not common to consider the combination of multiple types of data and analysis in mixed methods approaches. The most serious issue, however, is that mainstream innovation research remains ignorant of a multitude of potential research questions and thereby loses sight of whole areas of interest. An overview of the empirical studies in this HSR Special Issue shows that the range of methods used is wider at the edges of the field of research. In order to relate these methods to each other and to the theoretical foundations of innovation research, we suggest a middle-range debate on methodology." (author's abstract)

Die Forschung zu digitalen Plattformen hat in der Soziologie Konjunktur. Plattformen sind empirischer Forschungsgegenstand und Aufhänger für Gesellschaftsdiagnosen zur Digitalisierung. Wenig verbreitet sind bisher analytische Konzepte, mit denen die vielfältige Empirie sortiert und systematisch mit den abstrakten Überlegungen zur gesellschaftlichen Bedeutung von Plattformen in Verbindung gebracht werden kann. Eine Grundlage für derart konzeptionelle Arbeiten fehlt bisher: Ein Plattformbegriff, der für Forschende mit unterschiedlichen Perspektiven, Fragestellungen und Gegenstandsbereichen anschlussfähig ist. Es wird vorgeschlagen, zu diesem Zweck auf das Konzept der Plattformarchitektur aus der ökonomischen Innovationsforschung zurückzugreifen und "Plattform" als Bezeichnung für ein Strukturmuster soziotechnischer Systeme zu verwenden. Das Paper stellt diesen Plattformbegriff vor und demonstriert exemplarisch seine Potentiale für die soziologische Debatte.
