"This book investigates news use patterns among five different generations in a time where digital media create a multi-choice media environment. The book introduces a new model The EPIG Model (Engagement-Participation-Information*Generation) to study how different generational cohorts' exposure to political information is related to their political engagement and participation. The authors build on a multi-method framework to determine direct and indirect media effects across generations. The unique dataset allows for comparison of effects between legacy and social media use and helps to disentangle the influence on citizens' political involvement in nonelection as well as during political campaign times. Bringing the newly of-age Generation Z into the picture, the book presents an in-depth understanding of how a changing media environment presents different challenges and opportunities for political involvement of this, as well as older generations. Der Verfasser schildert die Praxis der elektronischen Partizipation der Studierenden an der Evaluation der Leistung der Universitätslehrer an einer dänischen Universität. Diese Praxis wird seit 1999 etabliert und ihrer Ergebnisse werden per Internet publik gemacht. Die konventionelle Evaluation der Lehrenden wird mit der Online-Evaluation verglichen. Dabei wird argumentiert, dass sie im Einklang mit der Tendenz der fortschreitenden Demokratisierung des öffentlichen Lebens sowie mit EU-weiten Reformen des Bildungssektors (Bologna-Prozess) ist. Es wird gezeigt, dass die Einführung der Online-Evaluation zu einer De-Institutionalisierung des Informationsflusses führt und die Entscheidungsprozesse transparent macht, was sich positiv auf die Qualität der Lehre ausgewirkt hat. During the last decades, an important shift in media use is that people increasingly follow the news by using digital and portable media, while news consumption via traditional, offline media is decreasing. A key question is how this change influences the extent to which people seek out and learn about politics from the news media. Using a large two-wave panel survey (N = 2,828) with detailed measures of political learning and consumption of the same news outlets on different media platforms, the study shows that while political interest has a positive impact on news consumption across all platforms, people mainly learn about current political affairs from using traditional, offline platforms. In contrast, there are no general learning effects from using news media on computers and mobile devices. The study thereby demonstrates how the increasing importance of newer, digital media platforms for news consumption challenges the ideal of a broadly informed citizenry.
