Derrida's work is controversial, its interpretation hotly contested. Derrida: Ethics Under Erasure offers a new way of thinking about ethics from a Derridean perspective, linking the most abstract theoretical implications of his writing on deconstruction and on justice and responsibility to representations of the practice of ethical paradoxes in everyday life. The book presents the development of Derrida's thinking on ethics by demonstrating that the ethical was a focus of Derrida's work at every stage of his career. In connecting Derrida's earlier work on language with the ethics implicated in his later work on justice and responsibility, Nicole Anderson traverses literary, linguistic, philosophical and ethical interpretative movements, thus recontextualising Derrida's entire oeuvre for a contemporary readership. She explores the positive ethical implications of Derrida's work for representation and practice and asks the reader to consider how this new ethical reading of Derrida's work might be applied to concrete instances of his or her own ethical experience.

This paper aims to unravel a tension between the act of naming and 'differential relationality'. Derrida has taught us that 'naming' is an essentialising, and thus metaphysical gesture that works to define and circumscribe a field of work (for instance, 'Eco-Deconstruction'), the human, and ecology. 'Naming' entails the beginning of the institutionalisation and sedimentation of a field, despite a 'field's' claim to the opposite. The danger of such sedimentation is that it perpetuates what Derrida calls ipseity that in the history of western philosophy and metaphysics has worked in contradistinction to the nonhuman (animals, environment, ecology).

Exploring who, what and how we remember, this piece proposes that to remember requires, on the one hand, an auto-memoration (the means by which we remember ourselves, and therefore how we shape and present ourselves to others), and at the same time, on the other hand, auto-memoration always detours through the world and through the other, which requires 'con-memoration' (remembering with the other). Referring to Derrida and Nancy, this piece argues that the memories of ourselves, and of others, is always already mediated because structured by differance and the other, and thus entails also a forgetting.

This ethnographic essay reflects on the process of the past coming into the present. In particular, it questions the ethics and politics of which pasts are appropriate to encounter.It creates tensions between which pasts are considered real or authentic, which questions the ownership of pasts we are not permitted to feel. It suggests that when we encounter and touch things that are not ours, we feel a connection to an Othered past. This "Othering" risks prescribing an Orientalist, colonial narrative. It concludes that perhaps to meaningfully encounter the past, we must recognise that the only authentic pasts are our own.

From US President Donald Trump's Tweet labeling news media "the enemy of the people" to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's establishment of a politically appointed Media Authority, media freedom is under threat in democracies and nondemocracies alike. According to Freedom House, in 2016 media freedom declined globally to its lowest level since 2003, with Europe experiencing the largest regional decrease. We investigate the relationship between government and media in Hungary and Poland and develop a theory that the rise of nationalist sentiment and leaders who leverage this sentiment to encourage censorship from the bottom-up has led to increased media restrictions from the top-down. We posit that bottom-up censorship will erode media credibility and make people more accepting of top-down media restrictions, which could, in turn, lead to nationalism unchecked by the fourth estate. Using a multilevel analysis of World Values Survey, we analyze the relationship between nationalism and media distrust. Using a cross-national time series, we analyze the relationship between nationalist sentiment and media restrictions. We find that increased nationalism is indeed associated with media distrust and media restrictions.

Focusing on the local New Jersey/New York Irish-American experience, this interdisciplinary book is a case study in what Irish-Americans have contributed to public and cultural life in the United States: how they have retained elements of Irish culture and invented elements of their own ethnic American culture.
