"Refugee Solutions in the Age of Global Crisis: Human Rights, Integration, and Sustainable Development addresses the question of what to do about the global refugee crisis. One in every ninety-five people on the planet has been forcibly displaced from their home, the collective response is woefully inadequate. Through comparative case study, this book provides the first policy analysis of all three durable solutions in the context of the global refugee crisis. The durable solutions are designed to find a permanent place for refugees were developed more than 70 years ago. Last year, fewer than two percent of refugees found their way any of these solutions. Reforming yesterday's solutions requires understanding how they have been used, how they have failed, and how they can be improved. Comparative case studies of the Somali Voluntary Repatriation Program, the Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement, and the Arizona Refugee Empowerment Project provide a comprehensive, global, and timely policy analysis grounded in social work, human rights, and sustainable development. The policy analysis of all three durable solutions is comprehensive, these are rarely considered together. The policy analysis is global in scope as the case studies are from refugee policies and populations from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and North America. The policy analysis is timely in its focus on contemporary voluntary repatriation, local integration, and third country resettlement programs. This book offers implications for improving refugee solutions to promote human rights, integration, and sustainable development. Truth and Reconciliation Commissions (TRCs) are restorative justice mechanisms for addressing human rights violations and injustice at the macro level. Mainly applied in the Global South, they have only recently been adapted within North America. The Greensboro, NC TRC was launched by grassroots and community-based organizations in 2004 to examine the causes and consequences of a 1979 incident of racial violence. The Canadian TRC was established in 2008 to address the legacy of colonial policies of assimilation and the forced schooling of indigenous populations. Through a comparison of these two cases, this paper will investigate how the North American context shapes the nature of the problems that these TRCs address, how they are organized, their relationship to the legal system, the role of civil society, and their relationship to poverty and reparations. Implications for social work, restorative justice and the potential for additional TRCs in North America are discussed.

Narrative interventions have been increasingly incorporated into social practice and applied to victims of violence. Truth and Reconciliation Commissions (TRCs) are interventions that seek to provide victims of violence with opportunities for healing and validation through a narrative process. In a qualitative study of the first TRC in the United States, the Greensboro TRC (GTRC) in Greensboro, NC, this research investigated the impact of giving testimony to the GTRC on the victims of a 1979 incident of racial violence. Most victims (N = 17) reported positive healing and validating experiences from their participation in the intervention. This study provides support for the healing assumption embedded in TRC processes and discusses implications for narrative interventions with victims.

Despite conventional wisdom that slavery has been eradicated, this analysis of the human trafficking literature reveals that this form of violent coercion and economic exploitation persists. However, there is little agreement upon definitions, estimates and responses to this problem. Differing academic and policy definitions and estimates of slavery are reviewed, in which most emphasis is placed upon sexual trafficking, while other forms such as chattel slavery, debt bondage and contract slavery are often under-recognized. There are a range of policy options for ameliorating this problem, which include social services, community-based interventions, harm reduction strategies and legal and economic responses.
